9. Egypt and the Era of the Israelite Judges

The Israelite nation gradually established itself in Canaan during a period of significant international conflict between Egypt and the Hittites, culminating in the Battle of Qadesh in 1276 b.c. The mention of the "Apiru" by the Phoenicians, as well as the reference to Israel in the so-called "Israel Stele" of Meremptah, all point to a significant Israelite population in Canaan during the latter part of the second millenium b.c. According to the biblical chronology, this would coorelate with the era of the charismatic leaders in Israel generally known as the 'judges.' For more free resources, please visit www.brucegore.com.

Homer's Odessey contains a section in which Ulysses meets up with Nestor who fought in the Trojan War. In that conversation, Nestor said that his countrymen after they left Troy were blown off course in a storm. They were blown across the Mediterranean and landed in Egypt where they fought a major battle with the Egyptians and then fled by sea. I think that Nestor's men were the sea people in the battle in the Nile Delta. The Myceneans were not taken up by the Sea People, they WERE the sea people.

How do we resolve the idea that "Apiru" can mean Hebrew, with the knowledge that "Hebrew" comes from Eber?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 2 года назад
There were multiple languages involved. The word 'Apiru' is certainly compatible with the proposition, even if the case cannot at this point be made at a level that is compelling. Dr. Frank Moore, late Harvard professor an ancient near eastern culture and language, made the case in an interview I heard, but I can't cite you to any published source of his. You might do a search on his name and see what turns up.

@@bostahome This is such a load of nonsense! At various times during the long history of Egypt it was conquered by the Hyksos, Libyans, Nubians, Assyrians etc, etc. Of course these are recorded, otherwise how do we know so much about them? Were their losses broadcast loudly by the Egyptians? No - but show me any civilization of any age that did. Akhenaten was NOT overcome by 'pagan' priests - as far as historians are aware, he died of natural causes. Afterwards people were happy to return to the comfort of their previous gods after the chaos of the Amarna period. Akhenaten worshipping with ex-slaves as equals? Equals?? Where are you getting this garbage? Akhenaten claimed to be the ONLY direct link with the Aten (the sun-disk God) and thus was to be the subject of peoples’ personal worship. Only Akhenaten could talk to God. There was none of this happy-clappy, all-in-this-together claptrap that you claim.

Canaan was an area outside the Egyptian Empire. Politically speaking, it was used as a buffer zone between Egypt to the south and the more northern empires. Canaan was occupied by the Philistines (Canaanites) as far back as Abraham and before. Canaan was the son of Ham and Noah's wife.

The New Jerusalem is distinguished from the Old Jerusalem, in that it is 'above' (Galatians 3:26), it is 'heavenly' (Heb. 12:22), and it 'comes down from heaven' (Rev. 21:2,10). It is God's creation, but it is constructed of the 'living stones' of believers in Christ (1 Peter 2).

The Apiru is a good guess because the term "Hebrew" comes from "Eberites" in Semitic tongues. BUT, it's possible that the Children of Israel who were in bondage in Egypt are different than the Hebrews or "Ibriyah" in Arabic and a similar conjugation in Akkadi or Sumerian or whatever was spoken in that region then. It's all Semitic tongues except for the Hittites, who are Japhetic or Proto-Turk. It's typical for Semites to fight against each other by allying with other non-semites and find more in common out of the differences. As far as Merneptah, he was the one who died by drowning, not his father, Ramses II. The story about him being a smaller man than his Great father, qualitatively agrees with this fact too, that Merneptah was the Pharaoh of the Exodus. As far as the Sea Peoples...are you sure you guys got the syntax of the hieroglyph language right? Are they talking about the people who caused the drowning of their people (army and King) in the Sea? There would have been those who stayed behind and had to pick up the pieces, including the recovery of the Pharaoh's body to be brought home and mummified. As far as the city called Kadesh, it has always been the city of Jerusalem. There were some other "Holy" cities around there too, due to shrines or miracles, but the term is still synonymous with Jerusalem in the Semitic world, till this very day, due to the revival of semitic religion by the Arabs and Islam. "Al-Quds" is exactly "Kodesh or Kadesh" as the "holy" city.

@Dandan Apiru, Habiru doesn't mean hebrews. The Amarna letters which you brought up, makes it clear. Consequently, the term "Habiru", came to represent any threat to the Egyptian empire. Na'aman points out that in many of the letters, the phrase; "to become Habiru", is used. This implies that to thwart Egyptian order and control, is to become a traitor, to cross over, and in essence, become Habiru, a rebel and guilty of sedition. The Amarna Letters painted those in opposition to Egypt as outlaws, and to participate in rebellious activities was to cross over, or, to become as the Habiru. However, not all the Habiru were involved in rebellion. Some remained loyal to the local governors. They were not a united group, with one political objective in mind. They dwelt independently of one another, and some hired out as mercenaries to other kingdoms or rebel leaders. Thus the overall view of the Habiru, as gleamed from the Amarna tablets, is one of a rebellious group of people

Akhenaten is regarded as History's first monotheist. Curious why the good proff didn't mention this or maybe its because he must know that literally everyone in that time was polytheistic including the Hebrews.There is a difference between the Hebrew faith before the Babylonian exile and the Jewish one that came after Cyrus released *ALL* captives of war..not just the jews. The good proff must also explicitly know about or actually even published papers(if he's as good as I think he is) about the three versions namely the Elohist,priestly and Jawheist versions that were compiled to form the edited manuscripts that underlined the new improved faith that became exclusively monotheistic after the second temple was built.

How did a family of 8 care for the animals? Why didn't the meat eating animals eat the other animals?

No historical evidence of an Exodus, and also no historical evidence of Egypt having Hebrew slaves. No worries though.

I was doing okay right up until the gentleman said that God doesn’t fail to give us his promises. I could not say that to the countless slaves, rape victims, families of people who lost loved ones to senseless violence and prayed their loved ones would pull through. Add to that the millions that quickly or slowly died to disease. I know what I say is polarizing. Since I do not believe in a god I go out of my way to assist and comfort others when I can. Jesus famously told for people to ask for things in his name and they would get them, but this does not work all the time. Wake up, folks. If you want to improve yourself or someone else’s life be bold and do so. You cannot know the power and reach of even the smallest kindness.

Jesus said to ask in his name and they will receive what they ask,yes- but the bible also says that all things evil are turn for their Good ONLY TO THOSE WHO LOVE HIM. Most people over look the fact that evil is change to good only for those who love( trust,rely on) him..so if we're asking for thing ,it is obvious we get them because we're praying In his will. Not ppls self wants, also, it's dependent on what your defining as love. go back and re-read the context ,my brother.thanks

James King, thank you for your reply. I do not believe in a god or a historical Jesus the Christ. I’ve read the Bible 3 times. There is some history and loads of mythology tossed in for good measure. Jewish archaeologists sure couldn’t find proof an an exodus when they looked either. What matters is being an upstanding helpful person god or not.

@MyOneBlack Friend Virtually no one disputes that Jesus existed these days - even the vast majority of atheists gave up that fringe mid-Victorian idea many many years ago. Surprised to see anyone try to disbelieve one of the most verified figures in ancient history - countless documents in existence dating from years in which would have lived many who could have met him. But some atheists do lose all perspective when it comes to things like this.

I am sorry to have to correct you; prior to 1948 there was never been been a land in history named “Israel”. Israel in the Bible is a second name given to Jacob. As a matter of a fact and correct me if I am wrong, jews established a real sovereign kingdom ruled by the Israelites was only for about 80 years during the kingdom of David and Solomon and that’s it!!! Their presence in that region was always under the rule of a much greater powers; be it the Canaanites, Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, Romans or Othomans. 80 years of true independent rule until 1948.

The Kingdom that David established lasted for 400 years without foreign rule before the Babylonians destroyed it. Even before the Israelite monarchy they were already firmly established in the region for roughly 300 years or so. That makes about 700 years of complete independence which makes your 80 year claim completely ridiculous.

You are the first Protestant i heard who actually knows the accurate history of world events as recorded in the Bible, and not making heretic ridiculous fantasies or lost tribe theories. These are great history lessons. You are wasting your God given talent on the unchristian Protestant cults, so please convert, either to the Roman Catholic church or to the Roman Orthodox church (like us Russians. God bless🙏☦
