not too far fetched for when the game originally came out. pop max for most, if not all, campaign missions was 75. Think even for multiplayer. can't remember cuz didn't really do that back then. But one would have had in their mind that such as a lot. With such campaigns 40 vills starts to feel like an over boom.

Same 5 vils on each recource and 2 deticated builder that would do nothing but build xD

i was more like the 10 5 5 5 guy. and then max pop, attack and forget _everything_ while attacking. usually I either won or lost after that ;D

he took a stand against someone with double the army and 6x the resources and still mamaged a better k/d ratio, mcclain doesn’t get enough recognition

For the longest time I was afraid of starting to play the game because I felt like I would just lose for sure. But... if mcclain can fall down to 9 elo and still keep going then maybe, just maybe I can survive too.

My skill when I was a child was probably 50ish ELO 😂 so I wouldn't be surprised.... I don't play ranked, even now though...but I think I've improved a lot since then, assuming I could at least play like a 500 ELO player.

The LEL series is so good for encouraging more people to play ranked. The ranking system will find you games with people that are near your skill level, regardless of what level that is.

You never know what crazy idea might inspire something new on your side. Veterans are all too often deadset in certain patterns and struggle with even imagining strats and tactics that differ too much. Also, it's generally interesting watching someone that develop and try new things and never been in touch with the typical copypasta strats and tactics most people go with.

@@kargothmort meh. There's enough people who want to break the mold and destroy the meta. It's just easier to copy paste and adapt a little. Not just in AoE. They become the stuff of legends at times - as they eat tc's..

Its a bit of both worlds, But yes creativity comes from many corners.

not to mention that with all those early campaign missions the max pop is 75. Meaning a big boom is 30-40 villagers. So stopping at around 13-20 would feel kind of reasonable. So do the tutorial campaign and then jump into ranked. would make sense for a kid's skill and thought process.

When I was younger I always made 16 eco. 4 wood, 4 gold, 4 stone and 4 food. Then I played my first online game… 😂 AoE became a whole different game that day!

How do you have parents so shitty they let you use a computer before teaching you to read?

@@Theseus1989 Me too. 8 on food was perfect because 8 farms perfectly surround the mill. And about the other resources, I had a bit more on wood so I could afford continuous simcity building, but I also had no more than 5 on gold and stone, because having more would mean the mines would run out faster, and that was scary.

I once hit castle at about the 30 minute mark as a kid. I felt like a God lmao

I still didn't have the confidence, lol, if you're say a low elo legend, how many times do you have to lose until you get to below 1000?

​@@musthaf9you start at 1000, so every loss takes you below. I am 82-75 and have just got back up to 950 elo 😅. But all my games feel fun and balanced at this point, so it was worth losing and learning to get there.

@@musthaf9 you also do lose a lot of elo in the first games. That means you dont have to play that many games to get at your elo.

Me too! I think T90 is responsible for bringing many players like us to AoE2 ranked. In my case- I really doubted I could play, because I'm a turn based tactics/tbs/rpg guy, and consider myself too slow for rts. So I really doubted I would play AoE2, I even pirated, just to save myself from wasting money if I'm end up never launching the game. But when I found enough will to launch it, set up key bindings, and train the basic controls and transition through ages, T90 LEL videos gave me the courage to play against LEL players, and even hope to do better sometimes. Of course, then I bought the game then as well. My elo went to 700, and then started to go up to around 1100. I ended up as a player who plays for two weeks, then does not for 3-6 months, retraining/relearning upon return each time. But I feel comfortable at this elo, and this type of time investment, so I'm glad to have found my place in this. Still, LEL is what I keep close to my heart.

There are many games where some momentum can make you win a game from a lost position, just because your opponent gives up. Both computer games and board games.

Once I got over that and learned that low elo pushes usually have 0 juice behind them, I gained at least 100 elo. No, they don't have a great economy behind that push...

Starcraft 1 has this actually called Team Melee. It's playable under "Multiplayer," but you can play LAN vs AI so it's effectively singleplayer. You can choose which race your workers are & your game would start with workers from multiple different races if you chose them.

I was thinking the same thing. Randomly resigning for no reason feels like a young child getting bored. Which hey, you do you, boo. Right? Lol

I often see this angle that these players are young children, but if they are, wouldnt they be playing something like fortnite instead? Why would they be playing an old boomer game like aoe2?

what impresses me is that these people have been playing online A LOT if they managed to get to 9 Elo

​@@geno240805 They probably looked up "Best RTS game" and it was between AOE, WC3 and SC2. Who knows, maybe their PC is potato and this is the best "realistic" RTS game available. Maybe they're playing on their parents old PC and it was already installed.

Yes, wondered if anybody else picked up on that. Sounds like some sort of compression / normalization artifacts. Have noticed it before but def more noticeable in this vid.

The only tactic that worked once was cannon galleons and not walls so that wouldn't explain the walling unless the AI is specifically rewarded to wall off sections of the map which is a very specific and hard to program reward. I highly doubt it though because the way he plays looks erratic, messy and thus human and not AI-like. He's just a player that enjoys the very specific way he's playing the game, maybe even in an OCD kind of way that pushes him to this style. Winning or losing is not the important thing.
