9 Epic Chinese Tattoo Fails 

I used to know this girl who showed off her new tattoo around school and everyone is like "woah" or "cool" but I was the only one laughing so loud because she told people it means beautiful/beauty (美) but her tattoo says pig (猪).

Not too long ago my small group from church got together and went to a homeless shelter to donate some homemade stuff and learn about volunteering. There was a Chinese couple in the group who hadn't been in the U.S terribly long. In the lobby where we were waiting there were 2 framed pictures of Chinese characters, he pointed them out to his wife and they murmured something in Mandarin while chuckling. Obviously we were confused so they explained, apparently one character meant "dreams" and the other meant "empty." "Empty dreams"- perhaps not the most uplifting thing to have in a homeless shelter.

I remember going to an amusement park and a really beefy looking guy was talking to his girlfriend and told her that his new tattoo that "having power" in Chinese (有力) when in reality it actually read 有刀 which means "have a knife". So the my friend and I joked that the tattoo artist should have written 有刀有叉 which means "have a knife, have a fork".

My little brother and I have a pact to get the Chinese character for "cereal" (or if there isn't one, something equally as stupid) tattooed somewhere and tell the artist it means "Siblings" or some shit. But no, it will mean cereal, and we will be very aware it means cereal.

Time to show this to all my friends with chinese tattoos (insert evil laugh)

Here in Brazil, a thai tattoo artist known for doing japanese and chinese writing was arrested a couple of years ago because he trolled people who didnt knew the language by tattooing on them swear words or funny/mean words lol

Next time I going to joke and say that it says "potato" they will be so shocked.

"I don't eat meat, but I still bite" is a saying I've heard before. It is more like if you point and tease me, I'll bite your finger. So ind the end it means something like; I'm kind, but don't fuck with me!

Which is why you fuckin study the language before you get a tattoo...

I have one that says libra. Everyone at the tattoo shop was making fun of me, that it might mean something else. But every time I go to a nail shop, the nail ladies are all like "ooooooo your birthday October ?? Your sign libra " I was so relieved.

It's funny that you mention the food item tattoos. A friend of mine had the Chinese characters for "Kung Pao chicken extra spicy no vegetables" tattooed on his calf. The wait staff in restaurants always got a good laugh out of it when he pulled up his pants leg and pointed to the tattoo when they asked what he wanted to order, and he always got exactly what he wanted. Unfortunately that was the leg he lost in a motorcycle accident.

I had mine written on paper by a Chinese woman, then I went to another city and asked another Chinese person to read it to me before I got it done. This is the best way I can think of to make sure your Chinese writing is accurately translated.

I'll be studying english and korean at university soon and when I'm bored I like to read korean tattoos on the internet to see if they are actually correct and oh boy I'm having the time of my life! Also I live in a european country and we have a lot of people who have misspelled english tattoos too and it's just beautiful!! But yes please do the reversed video on chinese (or asian in general) people having english tattoos!

If you read 所狗 from right to left (traditional style), it would mean dog house, which could be vaguely gangsta-ish. Also, the guy with 讯笨 (xun ben) was probably looking for 讯愤 (xun fen), but got the pinyin wrong.

The golden pig might not be a mistake. I'm not aware of the nitty gritty details, but basically every 5 years of the pig (so every 60 years total), there's the year of the golden pig that is lucky or something good. So maybe that person is born in the year of the golden pig, or maybe he's born in the year of the pig and just wanted the golden there for the sake of it. The fact that its upside down could be justified with the same reasoning that people post 福 upside down on their doors during lunar New Year.

Is it possible that some of these characters are Japanese instead of Chinese? I know that they share a lot of characters, but the meanings are different sometimes.

I will purposefully tatoo 薄荷冰淇淋 on my body and I will not be sorrz for it :D

When I was in Spain I saw a guy with the words '秘密死' (secret death/secretly die?) tattooed on his arm. To this day I still have no idea what he was thinking when he got it.

Maybe coffin dude is a mortician? I knew a girl with a Chinese character tattoo on her ankle; she got it with her friends and said it meant friendship. I'm not Chinese and I don't speak Chinese, but I had studied Japanese and knew the characters for friendship and it was not the character for friend.

Although I am an 'egg,' my Mandarin is very weak. However, this topic has always facinated me. Westerners that have no clue about the langiuage trusting a tattoo 'artist' with their skin artwork. The biggest error I have seen is the spacing (either vertical or horizontal). The recent one I have seen is what was suppose to be 'loyal' (忠), but the spacing vertically was too much, so the person in fact had the tattoo saying (中心) meaning center.... Center of what? Another was what the receiver thought was friend (朋), but the horizontal spacing was too much, which resulted in 月月, which translates to 'month by month.' If your getting a tattoo of a Chinese charate, have them draw the character and show it to someone from China or Taiwan. If they giggle or laugh, DO NOT get the tattoo from that tattoo 'artist.'

奇is okay for tattoo since it can mean Wonderful or Distinguished, such as 神奇，奇迹，奇鸟形状录. Even one popular Chinese video site named 爱奇异

I imagine that fairly often the tattoo is not a Chinese character for anything, but only looks Chinese to someone who does not read Chinese.

I had a coworker named tim and had chinese characters which he said it says T I M but putting the three random characters together it read as Unreliable delivery service

I think one thing to remember is that many characters in Japanese Kanji are taken from Chinese but have completely different meanings. So reading them as kun a instead of the on ( or ong) will give them totally different readings as well.

I find it so cool that since I'm taking Japanese, I can recognize some of the characters that have the same meaning even if it's not pronounced the same (I know it's because Japan used the Chinese character system).

If you look at some of the tattoos drawn on Justin Timberlake for his role in 'Alpha Dog' you will see one of them is the chinese characters for 'ice-skating'. I thought that was hilarious, this supposedly big, tough gangsta type dude, with 'Yay, ice-skating!' tattooed on him

This is why I will never get a real tattoo in any foreign language except in Kreeth, and that's only because I completely made that language up. Like created the entire alphabet and a few punctuation marks. Though a few letters look somewhat Japanese, so I'll have to be careful what word I choose...if I decide to go with that kind of tattoo to begin with.

One day we met my friend in the mall and he showed up hes new tattoo and said that it was supposed to say his namn "Mark" but my ex started laughing and told him that it didn't say his namn at all. He said that it was some sort of mening that didn't make any since at all. 4 months after I saw on Facebook that he had done a coverup on his old tattoo. Haha I felt so bad for him xD

I've seen those Chinese failed tattoos before lol. I also saw this boy with a Chinese tattoo and it just made me laugh, he was about 14 ( too young for a tattoo) , his Chinese tattoo was 龙的精神, I get his intentions but I just had to laugh.

Some of these tattoos were in a Japanese people react to westerners with Kanji tattoos, and some of the meanings were the same, does that mean Japanese and Chinese have some words that have the same symbols and are read the same?
