Great video. It's pretty easy to find good videos about AOE 2 but this is the first time I've seen a really good informative video about AOE 3. Which I have to say really needed it, as AOE 3 is much harder for newer players to get into. Keep up the good work.
An year ago we witnessed a great Age 3 RU-vidr in the making. Today you've already become one of the rising stars of Age 4 RU-vid. You've come so far, Keep it up! I became a bit emotional watching this video again.
When you think of how lackluster the Spanish economic machine was, the Spanish gold card is more of a fix than a game breaker for them, really. When the list of imbalanced OP civs comes out for the DE, I really doubt the Spanish will be there. Sweden on the other hand...
You're exactly right. After they exhausted those military shipments in early fortress... there was nothing left of them, now, however, they're incredibly potent in the midgame due to this change, and as a consequence that carries over to the midgame.
From one Aussie Dronho to another: please keep making the DE content for Age of Empires 3. It's been really useful to see a lot of the strata and changes laid out.
there are other OP cards out there. Swedes get a card that reduces all arty pop slots by 1 including heavy cannon(mortars go from 4->3, falconets 5->4, leather cannon go from 3->2 and so on). then there is barrage which gives mortars a large area of effect attack that allows them to attack units (at a range penalty, fortunately), that is bound to make mortars a far more enticing option.
could you please publish your graphics settings? It looks so niceley matching to the classic Age III while keeping the improvements of the new graphics.
Its not, spain and france who couldnt previously make grens are especially strong. France gets free grenadier upgrades from the church and spain can buff their attack by 55% using unction.
Mate, you ever go to the cheesecake shop and don't get the black forrest? I have only ever done that, and everyday for the last 15 years I never looked back
I’ve always had a personal issue with game companies slapping the title “Remastered” on an old game when all they’ve done is increased the graphics. I’m pleased to see that with this game, they’re truly remastering the whole AOE3 experience.
that's exactly the point, they only improved the graphics, they've ruined the card system, the campaign has bugs, in the original version I've never encountered nor one, there are no new campaigns for the new civs, the historical battles are good but they've created units and building for them that are not available on multiplayer, the original campaign still being absolutely the same, I mean, is just so stupid!, they didn't do anything apart for minor stupid stuffs, I'm glal that I bought it for free with game pass, cuz I would never buy such a crappy DE when I have the original game with War of Liberty mod that's even more impressive than any other aoe apart from aoe 2
@@gastonhitw720 how have they ruined the card system? Or are you one of those that demanded the level 40 grind to unlock necessary cards before you could play them in PvP?
@@AussieDrongo "game breaking" usually does mean "overpowered" but to an extent that the game is not properly playable any more. e.g. not "grenadiers are now so good, that they will be meta", but "grenadiers are now so powerful that whoever has them first, wins the game"
@@AussieDrongo He's not taking about glitches. He's talking about "game breaking" in terms of what it actually means: something that's so overpowered that it ruins the game.
It's just click bait. All of these changes seem very good for balance. I don't play aoe3 but the whole video he basically just repeatd "this useless thing is now strong" as if it's a bad thing. Some things may need small tweaking, the mortar thing seems like it could be overpowered. But none of this is game breaking. He got me to click but he'll get a thumbs down for the click bait
@@SeldomPooper They most definetly were. Skirms get their full bonus against grens since grens are heavy infantry. They have longer range so you can easily kite the grens. Grenadiers have a long animation that cancels if you walk too far from them. In TAD grenadiers also have negative multiplier against light infantry(I cannot remember how much it was). In what way are skirms bad against grenadiers? I'm not sure the grens can win even in a straight up 1v1 slugfest with no micro. With micro they get destroyed. They only ever stood a chance if you played brits and sent all the cards for them. Even then any light infantry would beat them easily once they get to guard levels.
@@Akterskytten grenadiers were never heavy infantry. P.S. Grenadiers were never weak vs skirms cause of 50% ranged attack resistance and having area damage. And area damage can be upgraded by 1 more with arsenal upgrade.
@@SeldomPooper They sure are heavy infantry. 50% ranged resist just means they have more hp. It does nothing if you can never catch up with the skirms to throw the grenades to begin with. The 50% resist also means the skirms do full damage (they have x2 multiplier) and the arsenal upgrade for aoe is locked to age 3. It costs nearly twice as much as counter infantry rifling, which gives skirms another multiplier against grens (x3 instead of x2). None of that really matters though since the problem is the grens god awful attack animation and range. They take a long time to throw their grenades. They also have short range. Skirms can just shoot them then walk back when they get within throwing range.
Hey there, just stumbled on your channel. That's some high quality content you're producing there, keep up the good work! One bit of constructive criticism though: you might wanna leave out the outro music beginning at 7:49. It doesn't add much to the video, I think.
An interesting note a few of these ideas (schooners / Old Han reform / Spanish Gold / probably thorougbreds ) were initially implemented into the fan patch in the base game. There has been a lot of collaboration between players of the old game and the developers here. The other changes very likely to have been developer led
Hello there It was a tough game man, I think if I hadn't suicided all my grenadiers into Arthur's base, and had gone imperial instead, I might have had a chance. At this stage the only thing I've found to beat grenadiers is cannons... spaced out.
@@AussieDrongo I do think so yeah, but to be fair at this point I was just sending mostly Pikemen, Crossbows and Hussars into your two team mates to stall them rather than really do damage, I was focusing on my economy and Guard upgrades. But by the end, I was rolling through your two friends whilst you were fighting my two mates (quite well despite that, I might add, despite the inequality). A fair game over all, you are right though, fully upgraded British grenadiers are really really strong, the only real counters I've found are Horse Cannons and a lot of cavalry, but that can be technically countered by the British player adding Culverins and Pikemen into his deathball.
Another broken thing with definitive edition is that if u play as the swedes and use "revolution" from the townhall and change to finland, u can spawn unlimited blockhouses. Try it!
Great video, very in depth analysis about these changes. I only think your script was a bit repetitive, especially the "in the original game" parts. Otherwise, great stuff, can't wait to play the final release with friends in a few days! ...and specially try to abuse some of these cards hhahahah
Thank you for the constructive feedback, I agree with you completely. It is hard to reference the original without saying the entire thing unfortunately.

i like seeing all these card changes, looking forward to looking at what they've changed with all the civs, and the subsequent balance patches i imagine we'll see after
Unfortunately currently Grenade-Launchers dont work with the russian "ransack" card (it still works with the normal grenades). :( I hope this gets changed/fixed soon.
W4ell srsly, Grenadier where allways liek a noobtrap, if you have about 15 you kill figgin ervything and noobs dont know how to handle...i imagine this getting worse :D
I haven't played AOE 3 in years but I'm happy to hear that they finally got rid of that stupid instant French horse nonsense. Nobody wanted to play against France, and others like me felt too disgusted to play as France.
Cheap infantry dealing a ton of splash damage with a fast fire rate is broken. People who played the "Wars of Liberty" mod and used the "dumdum bullets" card as Ethiopians already knew this :)
What about russia raiding cav oprichnik are they stronger or weaker? and does russia have the strongest grenadier on the game right even though they have no home city card that make them stronger because its one of their royal guard unit
Strongest grenadier in the game definitely goes to the British, they've got 4 cards to upgrade them, they are absolutely insane. The cards make a real difference with +30% health and +50% attack, compared to the +10% of the Royal guard grenadiers.
The Devs seem like they weren't fans of the Russians. They are giving away the unique Russian thing every one can rebuild forts giving everyone grenaders giving them shit politicans
Just downloaded now and finally can enjoy. I am disappointed that the population cap is not increased on skirmish and campaigns. Aoe2 had increased it and campaigns were much better and easier even on the hard setting. Also how come your graphics look more like the original game where my one looks intensely polished? Is there anything I need to change in the graphics settings?
you mean the hand motor sir. i seen the russian and ottoman units use those in empire total war and historically the weapons unrelyablity and risk to the user is so great that it is disregarded out right by most armies compleatly and if it was used then it would be used as a gimik and a show peace not worthy of the field but when it was used it gives the gernades extra range to engage targets down range. though it would have to be lit before the weapon fires and risk of it blowing up on you is high.
There have been no substantial changes made to the Japanese, mainly small balance changes, such as decreasing the additional range on the age IV Morutaru card from +6 to +4.
I think the change to the French Cuirassier is needed. I am concerned that the Grenadiers are going to be overpowered now though, they seem a bit like abus guns with splash damage. I guess they can be countered with skirms though
The only game I lost with grenadiers so far has been the one in this video. My team mates decided not to make military, so I had to 3v1 as shown in the video, lol.
Great content mate. Great to have a content creator focusing on the facts and options for the game rather than just playing the game! If you would like a little bit of feedback from my side, I think your videos are very well made. The audio and the visual parts of the videos are very high quality and you bring useful numbers and facts. For this particular video though, I missed a transition between each of the cards. Maybe putting the text first and introduce the card by simply saying "Number 9. Spanish gold" would make a smother transition between them. Just my opinion, of course. Keep up the good work!
Hey mate, thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed comment, and especially thank you for the constructive feedback. Transitions have definitely been one of the things I've had difficulty with, but I think I've able to settle on some less obtrusive ones now. Are you able to take a look at my more recent videos and let me know what you think?
@@AussieDrongo For this video on particular I was mostly referring to the audio and plain text transitions, since it was hard, for me at least, to notice when you were done talking about an item in the list and moving on to the next one. Regarding the visual transitions, I'm a fan of simplicity and less is more (at least that's what I tried to apply to my videos when I had time to make some). I think your visual transitions with icons (for example when you show the icons of arsenal upgrades or the stats of units briefly on the screen) are very good. I like the fade in effect. However, I dislike the transitions used for the gameplay in the background. Particularly the shaky ones or the ones with complicated effects. I think a simple side to side fade in would look simpler, easier on the eye and wouldn't distract your viewer from the point you're trying to make, since the background gameplay is just this, background. I'm glad that you find the feedback helpful. I always try to give some constructive feedback to those who you can clearly see they put the effort, and even more when it is appreciated. Have a good day!
Hey I'm thinkin about picking up an aoe game, I'm more into fast paced combat, expansion and all that similar to Starcraft 2, would you recommend aoe2 de or aoe3 de? I can't seem to choose.
Grenadiers were a joke in the classic game? Huh, never knew that. I would mass them all the time. Then again I played on the easiest difficulty so I probably never noticed. Although I did once try it on Moderate and got some good results massing them... Then again, there is a difference between fighting the AI and fighting a person. They probably have a better idea on what they're doing than the guy who's massing grenadiers...
From what I can see, there have been very little changes to the Aztecs. I think coyote runners will counter Grenadiers, however, you'll need to use formations and multiple groups.
@@AussieDrongo yes I’ve only noticed that the age 2 coyote card is 6 instead of 5, the warrior priests no longer take up population space. There is a card in age 1 that buffs the war chief by 50% atk and hp that used to alow him to train Janey the pet jaguar, now the card is the same buff but unlocks the noble hut to be constructed. The jaguar prowl knight is trainable in age 2 using this but the arrow and eagle runner knights are still locked until age 3. Even still I haven’t worked out a way to make that useful, Jaguars cost a lot and noble huts aren’t cheap either.
Are there changes to German cards and/or unit stats/cost? Thanks. Would be interesting to see any changes made compared to the last version of the original gane.
What about Indian Elephants has their population been reduced I am referring to Mahout Lancer as they cost way much population comparing to their strength and utility in battle. They have low Base Attack. And high hitpoints melt in seconds due to low attack. Even 3 Age3 Hussars have more combined HP than Mahout and cost less population. Also, Sowars need to be buffed are they Buffed?
(Warning for photosensitive viewers: this video contains some flashing imagery, particularly during scene transitions) An interesting set of changes; I'm particularly intrigued by Spanish Gold and Grenade Launchers...
Hey Jayarbuck, interesting that you say that. I've fixed it up on my most recent videos, are you able to take a look and let me know if you think the same for those?
To make a "Spanish gold" card historically accurate, it should also reduce Spanish player's speed of all coin gathering for the rest of the game, since overflow of gold from New World (where gold was used more as artistical material than currency) brought its value down in significant way (some historians even argue that this was the reason and beginning of the end of Spanish role as superpower)
Instant creation of any unit is overpowered, removing it from the french only will make them painfully underpowered i fear. I already felt like I was forced to go into cuirassiers when playing french not because it was actually OP but because everything else that they have is too weak (besides arbalest rush maybe). But I guess so many people got a rage boner against the french that they didn't even realise that and would actually like one civ being so much weaker... well at least they got grenadiers
I think it was mainly targeted at the french lategame, so treaty in particular will be affected. Grenadiers are really something im curious about, I think there's going to be a very competitive french fast industrial strategy with grenadiers!
