The rear axle seals were leaking and causing the brakes to not be very efficient so I am changing them but it's not the easiest thing to do, I ruined on e seal but I did finely get it in. the brake shoes look like new other than some oil on them but after using a torch on them , the oil doesn't seem to be a big problem.

That's pretty good the way you can figure things out as you go. The inside look fairly clean. Not rusty. To bad the seal got messed up.I thought the pipe was going to work. Sometimes things happen.

sometimes if one way to skin a cat don't work, we have to try another way.. lol

That looks like some heavy work that one would not want to get in a hurry with. Satisfaction in preserving a nice collector tractor. Too bad about that first seal, it sure looked like it was going in alright.

I thought so too at first, but on the edge it curled up part of the outer seal area so I didn't want to trust it.

Thanks for posting this. I'm still wondering about that seal with a whole in it.

That looked like a difficult job. Great job getting it done. Working on smaller tractors seem like less of a workout

yes they are, this axle and brake drum had to come out as one piece so it was very heavy.

Gotta love those ratchet wrenches. This coming May will be 5 years that I've quit smoking. I agree those linings look pretty good. That seal was a little pain in the butt. Lol.... Look forward to the completion of the project.

yes, it's not the easiest thing but now that I understand how it's supposed to work it better.

@jankotze1959
@jankotze1959 4 года назад
Well done, that was a job Vernon, your jack set-up let me think of my effort with the Farmall, the only difference is I quite the job because the wheel hold on to the axis and the jack set up to flimsy for comfort
@MissouriOldTimer
@MissouriOldTimer 4 года назад
yes, there's no real good way to support the axle when you are working on the ground and no substantial support to put the jack on.

I’ve been trying to get the brake drum off I’m gonna try your way between the brake drum have a trumpet of primer out been buying it with a hammer and can’t get it to break loose so you just gave me another way to work on it
@SawmillerSmith

The brake shoes might be pressing against the brake drum. There is a brake adjuster you might need to ajust.

My dad and I took the back wheel off his Massy Ferguson. I tried to move it by myself but it was too heavy for one person to move. It started to fall on me so I tried to jump out of the way and it knocked me over and pinned my foot to the ground. My dad couldn't lift it and had to use 2x4s to pry it up to get it off me. Lucky it didn't break my leg.

they are heavy I tried to keep the tire straight up or it could have gotten away from me.

I just got a ford 8N only to find out it a 9N but still a great tractor . but at the end of rear axle is a nut that holds it all together .. I mite be able to take off the bolts off the back of break housing off the axle so it comes off as one .. Because it leaking oil
@MissouriOldTimer
@MissouriOldTimer 3 года назад
yes, the 2n and 9 n are different from the 8n, in that the rear hubs are very heavy because more has to come off to get to the seals and brakes.

I think you would have had it with the pvc pipe if you just cleaned the pipe out first. You got it done and that's what matters.
@MissouriOldTimer
@MissouriOldTimer 4 года назад
yes that pipe had been up in the "loft" of my old shed for who knows how long. but the last way seemed to work better.

@@MissouriOldTimer The Hack. Folks think those sure seals are the end all to the problem they are not. The original issue is the outer seals are leaking. It’s believed packing them with grease and covering up that mess with a SS is the fix. The proper repair is to replace the original seals. Its quite a job to replace those seals that takes special tools are a torch to cut out the wheel bearing. Once the wheel bearing has been cut you will need a new bearing. The next option is to make a tool to pull the hub and bearing saving the parts. You would need a press and a good press at that. It only takes one drop of oil on a brake shoe to fudge them up heating them will not remove the oil. Trash the shoes and replace with new. Doing a seal/brake job on a 9/2N is quite a project why haft arse it ? In the hack DIY world your repair is famed as the real deal it’s not period.
