This is awesome! Actually, a nice work. Few things to consider: 1. Trust rod cavity cover (man, that hole looks awful). 2. Fully enclose electronics. 3. Scratch the paint from the bottom of tuners to allow them to make proper contact with grounding wire.
@dezthescentlessapprentice
@dezthescentlessapprentice 4 года назад
This!
@mal2ksc
@mal2ksc 4 года назад
You could also scuff the tuners gently at the points where they touch _each other._ That way if one isn't getting a good ground contact directly, it can at least hand the job off to one or both neighbors. Or if he's really adventurous, he could silver solder the whole mess into one solid block and never have a problem again -- electrical OR structural.

I think painting truss rod cavity would look better than that cover that was originally on it.

This was such a neat build! As you said, first prototype design. It is how you learn the details to do it better the next time. We often forget. The Strandberg guitars were not created in one attempt either. They probably had a lot of iterations and tweaks.. I feel inspired now. I had been wanting a headless for a while now too, but I had not considered trying to adapt a regular guitar. Thank you for the video!

I've been waiting so long for this video and you definitely delivered! I'm glad that's you're inspired to dive deeper into the world of headless! One thing I haven't seen explored outside of Matt Heafy meme-ing and Traveler collabs would be headless singlecuts (LP/EC, not Tele), which is why I custom ordered one from 10s that they're currently making. The issue that occurred was being unable to accommodate a more standard scale length, having to go baritone to preserve the shape. I'd be more than happy to email you the initial design if you're interested, thank you for your musical genius and reading my banter!

I myself would have taken off more wood cutting off the horns and only leaving the arm rest and the lap rest thus turning the contraption into a 9 string travel guitar,- which I think would be cool af. Pair it with a 5 string short scale bass and you´d have the beginning of a compact lightweight laptop studio where every single item could be fitted into a custom made flightcase and you´d be good to go,- record virtually anywhere.... Hmmmmm...... Just might have myself a new project here.... Good one. :)

I’d imagine having the same wood and neck through pattern carrying on through empty space could look pretty cool along with the fact that the transition between the two pieces should be much smoother and the control cavity’s already routed out

Can you do a video about tritone tuning? Like C F# C F# C F#? I think such a tuning has a lot of possibilities, like easy barre power chords and the potential for a large range similar to NST or all 5ths tuning, while also being easy to learn, because you only need to know the notes on 2 strings, because the other strings are just octaves! I think it would make for quite an interesting exploration.

the sounds you're getting don't sound like an improperly grounded bridge. They sound like a lack of shielding. You'd need to modify that control cavity to have walls you could shield if you wanted to get rid of the hum

Yeah man, that's a really cool video! I absolutely love DIY guitar mods and I have to admit that you have to be pretty brave to butcher your 9 string this way :D. But you really made some mistakes and the result could be better. I decapitated a guitar once and I think you should've prepared better for this. Drawing a scatch or photoshoping something over your 9 string in it's original form would've helped a lot. And you could avoid 3d printing (because tbh this part looks not very professional) by making a strandberg looking design with this deep cut on the bottom. I heard about your lack of tools, but you could borrow a jigsaw for a day, the result would be much nicer looking. I did my guitar this way and it came out pretty cool. But maybe i just nag too much, you did a good job, it works and that's the main thing, in my opinion you just hurried too much in some parts of work and that's why some parts look a little sloppy. If you had spent a little more time and patience, and calculated things more carefully, this could come out much better. Things like this need precision, but anyway it's a really cool experience. Thanks for sharing this vid and good luck with your next projects!
