Something that motivated me when working on my first draft was keeping track of word count in a journal. I’d write the date, words that day, and total word count and seeing the total count go up over time helped me keep going. It made my goal feel more achievable in a way

For focusing, I find ambience tracks relevant to the scene I'm working on helps put me in the scene. For example, I'm currently writing a medieval fantasy novel, and when writing a scene in a town or city, I'll use a medieval town ambience track to set the mood of the scene, basically allowing me to experience a taste of what my character's experiencing.
@Tyranniod
@Tyranniod 2 месяца назад
This! ☝️ I always do this. I'm currently writing a post apocalyptic novel and the world is very empty. I find myself listening to quiet ambience of nature.
@DonVigaDeFierro
@DonVigaDeFierro 2 месяца назад
Sounds good, but music distracts me a lot. I can't write with any noise. What I do is listen to music _before_ writing, so that I get ideas. After that, writing gets much easier, but not during writing.
@Seriously_Unserious
@Seriously_Unserious 2 месяца назад
@@Tyranniod I use nature ambiances too, my novel takes place in a boreal forest for much of it, and has a number of scenes where the MC is hunting or in a small patrol. I'm also coauthoring a post apocalypse biker story.
@Seriously_Unserious
@Seriously_Unserious 2 месяца назад
@@DonVigaDeFierro Everyone's different. For me, the controlled noise is better then the uncontrolled noise, so I'll opt for that rather then random cars revving, people talking and whatnot. I mean, nothing says medieval like a car engine roaring or a siren wailing as I put myself in the minds of characters.

Listening to Bach and Instrumental album versions of Atmospheric Black Metal are my go-tos. Music has always been instrumental (haha) in helping me focus, set a mood that my WIP fits with. These are all solid tips that you've offered! I have kiddos running around, so for me, if I can get in a 10-15 minute uninterrupted writing sprint, or in my current WIP's zero draft get in a 2k-3k word chapter and call it a day, that's a big accomplishment. It's so easy to click on a new tab and tell myself I'm going to do a "little" research, or check out craft videos, work on an outline, etc.

@@WriterBrandonMcNultyHi, Brandon. I really enjoy your channel and creative writing advice. I know you must be extremely busy working but can I just recommend the T.V series Tokyo Vice (the final episode of season two just aired on Max). I've not seen any of season two yet as we don't have Max in the U.K but season one was great and it definitely seems to have flown under the radar. I wonder if you'd ever consider writing a Screenplay or a Teleplay one day? I'd definitely tune in to watch a show as well written as someone with your talent! My book has a lot of oceanic, maritime design and thematic motifs, so that helped a lot too

What distracts me is the multiple characters I want to create by drawing and adding lore/details about their character. Sometimes I'll have one drawing where I'm halfway done then I'll do another drawing because I really wanna draw these cool characters I have in my head. I know I'm supposed to do one at a time but if I don't do it, i feel that I might forget. Now when it comes to writing or adding interesting elements to my characters sometimes I go back and forth for each of my characters and use inspiration from other sources. There are other times where I want to make them more interesting and compelling that doesn't feel generic and sometimes I get stuck.

The top thing that distracts me is all of the people texting or calling To ask if I can do yard work, or maybe have gardening questions. I have a question for you. Ever done a video on writing facial expressions /reactions? Seems like “eyes narrowed”, “eyebrows pinched”, or “forehead furrowed” gets used a lot for many different emotions or reactions.

I recently reflected back and realized I was most reliably productive back before a cross-country move andI was in a critique group. The knowledge that it would be my turn to present a chapter in X number of days always kept me on track. To recapture that productivity, I recently hired a friend to be my accountability buddy. Actually sending him a token amount of money every month takes away my reluctance to be "bothering him" with my random progress updates and such, and also makes me work harder so I don't feel I'm wasting my money. So far so good. AFTERTHOUGHT: Hey Brandon, I also wanted to thank you for a related tip from your drafting in longhand video. The gist was that if you draft in longhand, it will feel more removed from the finished product than if you were typing into the document that will someday be your final version. I do handwrite a lot, but even when I draft on my laptop, I open a brand new blank document that looks nothing like a manuscript and do the first draft there. I then have the idea of giving it a short editorial pass or can just copy and paste it into my manuscript document. Keeping those separate really does help. Thanks much!

Nice vid, my favorite tip was setting goals. I set a goal of 6 months for my first self published book and basically met it. Another tip I'd add is be willing to invest money into your vision. I'm an empathetic writer, so when I spent a few hundred dollars on Fiverr to get a painting made of my protagonist, it helped me connect with her a little more. I understand not everyone can do that, and that's ok. To the writers out there, you have a singular unique perspective that no one else has ever had. Good luck!

This is perfect for me to listen to right now. I not only have ADD, which tends to get me easily distracted, but lately I've been slacking on my writing for a Fan Fiction I'm working on. At first it was because I was very busy at work and I used to work hard on the story. Now that I'm trying to get back to the story, it's kind of hard. I love your advice to listen to music which gets you focused on the story. I always listen to music while I write that it always helps. Also about the reward after writing is great advice.

Just found your channel and whoa, this is exactly what I needed! This autumn my third short story is going to get published, but my WIP is a novel series so every help is appreciated! To the question. What distracts me the most is my own perfectionism. Whenever I stumble upon a detail - I correct it. New ideas for lore? Better check former chapters to weave in hints or to develop it more. Character X should have an other hair color? Revisit it now. A desert bandit has a sword? Better do research which type he has ... you get the idea. Oh, and then there is music. Scene done? Time to search the next suited song.

If I may, I have a genuine idea to build upon point #1. If you have a movie, book, tv show, etc. (especially one that is a major inspiration or influence for your book), I like to have screenshots, excerpts and the like in my visual. That could be on-screen, on the wall, on a board or whatever. I think it helps with motivation and, when brain-block or boredom hits, at least the thing that is there to distract you is the thing that motivated you in the first place. It helps me keep the creative juices flowing. It's a self-discovered thing and I've never heard anyone mention it before. For those struggling, I would recommend it. It helps me out a ton

Distractions for me is mostly gaming. I'm an addict to it, have a strong passion for it. Same with movies & TV shows. But there is that one thing that pulls me into this wonderful world, the same with Movies, and thats the Story. So many stories from across a dozen of games, most inspiring, most interesting, most well written. And that, along with movies, motivates me to write my own Book.

The only thing that stops me from writing is a deadly mix of procrastination and a tight schedule. I only have so much time in each day. I have a lot of things to do during the day. The short amount of time I have to write, I decide to instead slack off or do something else. And by the time I work up the motivation to sit down and write, it’s time to start preparing for the other things I need to do that day. It’s tough having ADHD and just not being motivated enough to do things.

My first book was written from start to finish to Us and Them: Symphonic Pink Floyd by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a YA fantasy novel set in kind of the same vein as Alice in Wonderland so it was perfect and after I came home from work, it made it easy to time my writing - I write for one full play through of the album. Part two of the book is much darker (very much an Empire Strikes back turn in the world) and I found an artist here on RU-vid that is perfect for dark and moody ambiance: Cryo Chamber. But I agree about lyrics in music - much too distracting for me. I remember reading that Stephen King listens to AC/DC, Metallica and the like while he writes! I cannot imagine trying that, but clearly it has worked for him!

I agree with no lyrics, or at least anything spoken shouldn’t be at the absolute forefront. My biggest distraction is my cat, as he will annoy me whether or not he is in the room with me. I think the music thing works for any type of project - art, writing, sculpting, designing a game, etc. Any time I'm spinning something up, the first thing I do is make a Spotify playlist with a target of 50 songs so I have something to set the atmosphere when I begin work. I have playlists for several projects I haven't even started yet, that way, as I discover new music, if I find something that fits one of my projects, I can continue to work on that playlist. It's a lot of fun and I find it incredibly helpful. My biggest distraction while writing is definitely when I suddenly get inspiration for another one of my projects - I feel the need to drop anything I'm working on to make sure I document the new idea and sometimes that leads to a spiraling rabbit hole. Before I know it, I spent and hour planning for project B when I should have been editing project A.

I came across a bit of advice a while back that suggested that if you find yourself in this position (hello, yes, me too) to work on your confidence as an editor. The idea is that if you develop a solid respect for your own editorial skills, you may be able to give yourself more permission to not be perfect the first time through. The future editor you is on the hook, not you the writer drafting, today. It helped me a lot.

I have a tip for ADHD specifically (or maybe just ADD, but should be good for both). The biggest distraction in this case is not an external one, it's within your own mind. As you write, many thoughts will enter your mind and try to be the most important thought. There's nothing you can do to keep those thoughts out entirely. If you try, they just get bigger, because trying to get rid of that thought puts more importance on it. Instead, you have to train your mind to allow space for those thoughts, good or bad, and realize the thoughts you want to focus on are still there and you can still focus on them even when other thoughts are yelling at you for attention. The way I learned to do this was through 5 minute mindful breathing exercises daily. This is a good thing for anyone to do, but for someone with an attention deficit particularly, it can help improve quality of life generally. I wish I could link a video without getting this comment deleted, but there are plenty of videos to guide you through a mindful breathing exercise. First you get comfortable, close your eyes, then take two deep breaths. After that, let your breathing become more natural. Find the area where you feel your breath going in and out the most, and focus on that specific feeling, whether it's air moving through your nostrils, your throat, or your chest moving in and out. This will be your anchor. During this exercise, other thoughts WILL enter your mind and demand your attention. Don't label them as good or bad, they are just thoughts, and most importantly, don't punish yourself for getting distracted. When you realize you're not focused on your anchor, acknowledge that you had another thought (and remember it's not a failure, it's just part of the exercise) and gently bring your focus back to that anchor. By taking just 5 minutes a day to do this, this will train your mind to stay in the present more easily, and to focus on the thoughts you choose to be focused on. This should help you maintain focus on your writing. Though eliminating distractions for writing is a good idea, don't worry too much about eliminating distractions for a mindful breathing exercise, because even an external distraction is another opportunity to practice bringing your thoughts back to your anchor.

Biggest distraction for me is my own mind. So, when I am at the house, I play brown noise and it helps me drown out my extraneous thoughts. Other times, especially when I have a mental block, I go to a busy bar or restaurant, sit at the bar and write. Utter chaos around me and I drown it all out and just write. I let the bartender know to just go ahead and refill my drink when it's empty and I tip well at the end. ( I don't drink alcohol, so I am not writing drunk.)

I like to go beyond "no distractions" and create an environment that promotes the creative process. Others have mentioned using ambience tracks, but I like to take it a step further and match the ambience track with what I'm writing. For instance, I'm working on chapters that occur in the wilderness, so if a scene is near a river, I will try to have a river track playing. If the scene is in a cave, I adjust the ambience track for that, etc. Not only does it keep outside noise from distracting me, but it helps set the mood - and RU-vid has many excellent creators with videos ranging from busy taverns to dank crypts. I also put my word processor into full-screen mode, so the only thing on the screen is my text - no title bars, no menus, only text. For editing, where I occasionally use a frequency analysis tool, I will have it on a second display, but I primarily like to keep things to a single screen like it's 1984. I wish it were easier to replicate the old Wordperfect for DOS experience, but it's possible to get close to that level of distraction-free with newer tools as well. This, and select ambience tracks, have been a huge boon for staying focused.

Another writing channel, Abby Emmons, has some really good writing music, playlists designed for particular stories such as You're slowly falling in love with the villain.

I can deal with most distractions by simply focusing on and in the story. INTERRUPTIONS are what ruin my writing sessions. Deep in a story, I'm in another world, dealing with the people and events going on there. Being jerked out of this deep zone by "Have you seen my socks?" or whatever, is like being wakened abruptly by a nearby explosion. When this happens, I sit completely disoriented for a while before I can adjust my mind enough to speak. How nice it would be if I could be left alone for an hour or two.

Great advices, thank you. Ok now I gotta ask - which Metal sub-genre do you listen to? I always liked you but learning that you're a metalhead just boosted you to a whole new level for me ❤😊

I love how no-nonsense your videos are. There are other writing advice channels I tune into and occasionally they stray off into opinions that have nothing to do with the topic. It’s great you don’t do that.

A good resource for the original question is the RU-vid channel "How to ADHD". I don't know if she has any videos specifically about writing, but she's got a lot of great "how to be productive with ADHD" / "how to set up your home if you have ADHD" videos that are really good.

Massively into iRacing at the moment and am also a dad to a 1yo, so free time is limited, and I try to sit down so often to write, but decided I'm too tired or lacking in energy, and find it much easier to play iracing where my mind sort of goes into a rhythmic funk. It's frustrating and annoying, because writing is what is fulfilling and I constantly thinking about it, and my re-write which is getting me so much more excited about my world and characters, I'm just not able to sit down and do a satisfying amount of work. I can't help myself when I have the hour here or there free time, doing something that is the easier fun

What distracts me from writing is my doubts. The intrusive thoughts of "this is trash", "nobody's going to read this", "your writing is not good enough"
