I have decided to put the best of the best on one plastic panel and test them head to head once and for all. The line up consists of nine plastic trim coatings...Artdeshine plastic/Leather coating, Gtechniq C4, Lone Star, Solution Finish, Wolfgang, Renew Protect, Lithium, Black Pearl, and Cerakote. Not in regard to center region, but I suspect the deeper soil accumulation at edges and corners may have protected those areas from sun.

That was a real world stress test on that mat. Weather, cold, and being partially buried took all to their limits.

As you walked around the mat, the Solution Finish really looked nice and black. I thought it looked the best. I’ve used it for years and am a big fan.

It looks like the dirt covering the end may have protected that section from sun damage. The CK is only still hydrophobic in the are that was covered and faded in area not covered by dirt. The Solutions is almost gone in the area (upper left) not covered by dirt. So, for me, I don’t think it’s fair to put them in the top tier as they had an unfair advantage. Black Pearl is the clear winner with Renew Protect second, then CK & SF.

Also, look at the section under the SF bottle. That part was not treated, but it was covered with dirt and it looks as good as the SF section.

Love the Renew Protect lineup. Super impressed by Cerakote, especially for a retail level product. Honestly, it's impressive that any materials you can easily get your hands on will hang around so long, even in those conditions.

Solution finish is a gem bc it never clogs the pores and is not hard to get off the surroundings during install. Renew black is great for tires

It was only at certain angles that two really stood out from the rest. That would be Blak and the one that has been discontinued. I totally forgot about this. I'm old so that's my excuse. Thanks Brian!

I'd like to see you re-apply the same exact product again on their same exact squares on the mat. Doing so would be a great example of using the same product for many years and which one truly holds up the best if used long term more than once. Of course, you could find another mat to try the other products alongside the original mat to compare.

Yes. absolutley do another test with the products you have laying around. It would be especially interesting if you have some really old ones that is discontinued a long time ago and see how they compare with the newer ones.

Sad to hear Black Pearl is no more. Over 2 years ago I used it to transform all the plastic trim on my truck from dark charcoal grey to black. After 2 weeks to fully cure I coated it with CarPro DLux. A year later I re-coated with DLux. Over 2 years later, still dark, rich black.

After a year, I’m surprised that any of them still had and color left let alone hydrophobic properties. I think I know which ones I’m going to try next. I think another test with other products is a good idea. Thanks for posting.

Great timing. I just finished using your trim restorer this morning on my 95 850 T5R. I can not stop looking at it out the window. It looks amazing!! All the bumpers, trim, door handles, and side mirrors look rich and deep.

@@kirkwilson5900 Have black sedan with 124,000 real miles. I saw a 850R red wagon go for $26,250 days ago on BAT auction. Looking to do a manual swap since I got the dark walnut shifter. Torn between keeping it original or do the typical mods. Have you done anything to yours?

@csebastian71 26k is unreal for an R. T5R should be valued more since there was way less of them. Nuts. Mine has 220k, other than a few used (automatic) transmission swaps, I've kept it stock. I switched out the nivomats for bilsteins probably 20 years ago 😅. I haven't driven for several years, still runs fine but need to swap the brake proportional valve and some tires etc. I need to bring it back in to service

I certainly would like to see the Lithium Trim Cubes added to a longevity test. I’ve applied it to my 20 year old Escalade and it looks and is performing flawlessly.

Please please please do a new one and use Angelwax Enigma Corona. PERL is a good choice too but Enigma Corona has lasted ages on my van.

I use Cerakote myself and like it a lot. I’ve also been impressed with the trim restoration abilities of Rustoleum’s product as well. If you ever decide to do another test I’d love to see the Rustoleum included as well as the Cerakote.

It would appear that the hydrophobic corner of the Cerakote section was the spot that had a significant buildup of dirt on it, likely shielding it from UV rays. Enjoyed seeing the results of the resurrected test, great content as always!

Cerakoate is amazing stuff. I did a faded step on my PVC deck a few years ago. Ridiculous how well it bought the color back. And still looks like new.

Whoa what gives, Blak didn't make it into the top 3 when it was a consistent top-spot contender from the start?! Kidding and I know you've found it to be a bit "hit-or-miss" in your experience but Black Pearl aside (as it's discontinued) to me Blak does look like the clear winner after a year in this test. Dark and super smooth looking (like C4 did up until the 5-month mark). I'm also very impressed with Solution Finish, great stuff. Cerakote looked a bit rough looking from the start compared to the middle row (maybe it was a camera thing) but certainly disappointing for me from 5 months in. An EXCELLENT comparison series - thank you so much, Brian. 👍👍

Kinda pointless to do a test with PERL. Most of us already know it's meant as a conditioner / temporary protectant. It won't last beyond 2 months. I still really like it though as it comes in a concentrate form and is really good value.

I just applied cerakote to my personal vehicle. It’s way too glossy for my taste, and no matter how I tried, it cured streaky. I’m hoping a second coat will help with the streaking

A lot of how well a products lasts is how well the panel is cleaned or decontaminated. All the oils need to be out of the panel and dry.

My knowledge of trim dressings/restoration has expanded exponentially in the past week from total noob...tried chemical guys vrp to make my Interior and faded exterior trim look new....interior a week later looks awesome.... exterior ran off in two days....yatta yatta...RU-vid worm hole and here I am drooling to get some c4 and become a real detail nerd

The price of these products is ridiculous, £17 for a tiny 1oz bottle is daylight robbery. I'm going to just spray paint my bumper here when i refurb my alloys black.
