This is our first time listening to Jamiroquai. Virtual Insanity is just as relevant today as it was back in the 90s, maybe even more so.

The song has stood the test of time but the video was what drove the whole buzz around Jamiroquai for a while. **Music video** **"Virtual Insanity" is Jamiroquai's best-known music video. It was directed by English filmmaker, director, and screenwriter Jonathan Glazer. At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards in September 1997, it earned 10 nominations, winning four awards, including "Breakthrough Video" and the "Best Video of the Year". In 2006, it was voted 9th by MTV viewers in a poll on music videos that 'broke the rules.' The single was released in the U.S. in 1997. At the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, Jamiroquai performed the song, recreating the famous floor moving concept with two moving walkways on the stage floor, going in different directions, for Jay Kay to use to dance on.**

When he's referring to mothers picking their baby's colours, it was a reference to how we had just decoded the human genome and there were fears that this could lead to "designer babies" where parents would be able to tweak their baby's DNA to change their eye/hair/skin coloring. The newish CRISPR technology can in theory do just that.

Agreed, timeless music. Very talented set of musicians who brought acid jazz/funk into the mainstream charts. They went more disco/electro/funk later on. The bassist was only a teenager when the band formed and was responsible for the Jamiroquai groove between 1992-1998 As you like to decipher lyrics, check out ‘When you gonna learn’ ‘Emergency on Planet Earth’ ‘Too young to die’ & ‘Scam’ all written in the early 90’s and still relevant today

Jamiroquai is considered Acid Jazz (funk and jazz combined), and they have some EXCELLENT songs. I want to say you've probably heard Canned Heat before as it's been in a couple of movies, but yeah, definitely check out their other stuff, and like everyone has been saying, the videos are crucial to these songs, very much a blended art style. As for context for the 90's: the good times of the 80's was over, everything started to really suck, and people were wising up to that and calling it out in music. Grunge, Punk, Metal, it all started getting much darker.

This is the difference between the music in the US and the the UK in the 90's. The UK chose to forget the 80's and went back to the 70's Jazz funk fusion as inspiration for a "Rare Groove " sound that lead to Soul to Soul, Massive Attack & Portishead with many more artists, it's an interesting niche to explore.

I remember when this song came on the radio in 97 or so, I instantly fell in love and bought the Travelling Without Moving album shortly after and was not disappointed. That album has such a banging funky groove! Been a Jamiroquai fan since then and glad you guys decided to give it a listen. I know why you're confused, because it has a funky, discoesque late 70's/early 80's feel, but there was a funky/disco scene happening in the UK in the 90's, where they are from, and they led the charge. They are absolutely huge there. From what I have read, the US record label/distributor of Jamiroquai did very little to promote the song and album, probably because they didn't want to see a disco comeback, so it didn't do as well here as it could have on the billboard charts. But that didn't stop them from getting recognized at the Grammies in '98 and won one. Saw this in my sub box and exclaimed "YES!". XD Anyhow, I don't remember if I suggested this to you or another reaction channel, but I'm glad you guys did it!

This is one of those songs where the music video is so good (as many people's comments have pointed out) that you could do a second video with the music video!

Never goes out of style or out of time. Some artists, some songs are not part of a scene, but just do their own thing and often sound timeless.

Song is a dire warning of today. These are things most of us (including myself) weren't predicting in the 90s. Some people had internet but not everyone like today. It was around 2000 when everybody started really buying computers. Chatrooms with no pictures. Napster and obscure video sites that had to buffer for a few hours until cable internet was invented instead of the older telephone internet.

And giant mobile phones with no cameras. Lol. Big clunky laptops. Palm pilots and beepers, pagers. Slow dial up internet. Ah! The '90s and early '00s.

Jamiroquai is was part of the acid jazz movement that came about in the UK in the 90's. "Return Of The Space Cowboy" would be a nice one as well, and many others. Grunge movement in the US with Nirvana and all those, pop punk as well.

The song earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. Not sure if it was '96 or '97. Video is very cool.

If you ever watch the original video, it was done by having the room on wheels and a team of people pushing it around. It's all real and done on a giant set. I was 10 or 12 when this first came out and couldn't wrap my head around the video. Looked so cool!

Deeper Underground was my favourite. It was also the theme song for the 1996 Godzilla movie - I loved that movie. It was the first DVD I ever bought (although there were only about 10 films on DVD in the stores at the time 😂)

Lex nailed it with the Stevie Wonder comparison. Check out "I Wish" by Stevie and it'll be immediately obvious how much his music influenced Jamiroquai.

Part of this song's magic is the original video!!!!! It was so ground breaking for it's time.. and it was just thought provoking with it's imagery and technology used in it's concept. I hope you take the time to check it out.. as it's beyond fun and awesome!!!!
