Sonic Origins is about to come out, so I decided to talk about Sonic commercials and magazines. Follow me if you want: / kirotalks #sonic #sonicmovie2 #sonicfrontiers
When I was younger, these ads always fascinated me so much. As an American that was born in '04, watching the old 90s ads as well as the foreign ads were always so cool to me to see how they marketed Sonic in different time periods in different parts of the world. Great video I laughed lots during it :)
I have my own theory about the Princess Sally "error". My guess is that at one point, Sega intended to swap Amy's sprites with Sally sprites. They had tried to do something similar with Segasonic The Hedgehog, as there are unused, Satam styled Robotnik sprites in the game's files. As such, it makes since to do the same here, especially cause both games were meant to drop in 1993.
If I recall correctly, the reason for the pseudo Sally design was due to the cartoon being canned in 1994. The team still wanted to use Sally, but didn't want to use an outdated character. (keep in mind the Archie series was also slated to end around this time)
Just gonna say to agree 100% one time bc incase other people reply i dont want to be a broken record I also respect opinions, so you can say Sonic Spinball is bad and it doesn't affect me at all.
I was born in 2000 so I’m always fascinated by pieces of early media. Especially ads, they really give you a feel of the culture for their time period.
5:39 *translating* I'm Sonic, and this is my friend Tails! We're at the Sonic 2 game! 5:46 *translating* Don't just stand there! Hehe! Run here to help me at Sonic 2!
90s commercials had kind've an edge to them and they really wanted customers to buy the product by how over the top they were. Which was a fun way in getting a lot of people to buy their things.
This guy is growing rapidly, and i still remember 2 weeks ago, when he only had 150 subs ;-; Anyways great to know you are getting the attenction you deserve
Correction: The translation of "Não fique aí parado" would actually be "Don't just stand there". If it were "Do not stop", Sonic would have to say "não pare" (literal translation of "do not stop").
5:40 a brazilian sonic ad? i didnt expect that translation "Hello! im sonic and this is my friend tails, play my game sonic 2, dont just stay there!" lol
I remember the McDonald's Happy Meal bit; they didn't have the usual container, but they did have a themed bag. In a table that was there for you to record your best times in some of the zones, it listed "Flying Battery Zone". At that point, Flying Battery was removed from the first half and put on "Sonic and Knuckles". But nobody told the _clown_ that...
I’m not sure which is worse, the fact the little brother is being punished for trading old sonic games, or the advertisement for the sega genesis attaching to the genesis 32x.
I JUST found your channel about 3 days ago and I'm addicted to listening to you dote over, praise, and in equal measures, make fun of Sonic. Such a simple channel idea yet so much material in what, 32 or 34 years of Sonic greatness now? I don't think you'll ever run out of things to talk about with Sonic. It's a literal treasure trove of grade A entertainment ranging from totally awesome to totally cringy and even both at the same time. I need a life man. I really really do.
I've seen your last video about Sonic's creation and i'm surprised that i found a Channel at his begginig. I like your content and you will have a great future in your path. You already have my sub and my 👍! Edit: as a Brazilian 5:46 was the funniest thing i've ever seen in my life. Luckly we had a VA more rebel that dubbs all Sonic séries, and the movie too
okay you're obviously doing something right. I don't know how you got to over 5,000 subscribers so quickly with just four videos but damn you're good! I when I first saw one of your videos in my recommendations you were just over 4,000 subscribers and that was just a few hours ago and now you're above 5,000 subscribers as of me commenting right now.
The last commercials for an Italian have an elevate, a heavenly meaning, as the ads obviously is about the two having 'fun', and the name SEGA in Italian can both mean saw and wank. So yeah, now you get why this ads with SEGA consoles is funny here
These weren't even the *worst* print ads in Sonic marketing history. In certain UK magazines targeting a young-adult audience, there was a print-ad of sonic lying on a counter drinking (presumably) alcohol at a bar around other patrons, with the tagline: "What's Blue and Pisses Over Everything? *Sonic the Hedgehog."*
As a fellow subscriber that speaks french what the guy is saying to the kid in the first sonic 3 commercial is that he likes the new elements of the game like before showing the special sphere stage he asks him do you like the new 3d level
7:20 actually, they put amy's name as sally on purpose due to the sonic satAM cartoon being famous or something like that, and they were changing her name in ceirtain places. i dont know if im 100% correct but its at least half of the information.
About that weird animated Sonic 2 commercial where Sonic and Tails can speak, I am a native Spanish speaker and I can't even understand the commercial (yes, it's Spanish)!
3:07 It was likely this commercial was broadcasted in Quebec because in France, the Sega Genesis is known as Mega Drive and the term Genesis was exclusively used in North America
7:52 what i hear is: pilot: is there another scene? (this wording seems weird? maybe im hearing it wrong) kid: check! pilot: and the new 3d stage? kid: check! (kiro talks over them here) pilot: here we go! (drops cartridges) announcer: the new sonic 3
Maaan I’m still trying to find this one obscure Sonic commercial that I’ve only seen twice. The only notable thing I remember, maybe I’m mid-remembering, but it had a Super or Hyper Sonic or other character, literally flying across the screen through the normal game stages; not just the final stage in S3&K.
The Sega Genesis Ads made a big deal about Blast Processing, but it was not a technique that allowed Sonic incredible speed. Instead, it was a hardware trick where the console could render more colors on screen then normally possible… for still images. However, when the hardware designers were explaining this to marketing, they heard the term “Blast Processing” and just lied about what is actually did.
It's funny, because I've only ever seen that Super Mario World vs Sonic The Hedgehog commercial via VHS rips uploaded to youtube (was a liiittle bit before my time), where the video quality just makes them look exactly the same.
Fun video, very nostalgic. The Sonic Cd Amy Sally error was probably just a miscommunication thing which sega had a lot in the early 90's. Satam was in production at the same time as Sonic 2 and was originally going to air in 1992 along with Sonic 2 and Sally's early design was pink with black hair. So when CD finally came to the US and it said Pink love interest character they actually probably thought it was supposed to be Princess sally because Sega of America had been working with DIC for over a year to create the show and characters. The show was delayed and re tweaked and sally was changed to the brown and red hair color design.
I love that Russian two-page spread for Sonic 2 that says Video-Ass in the bottom left (Maybe it stands for video accessory or something, but still - Video Ass) Also, surprised you didn't mention the whole Sonic/Right Said Fred Wonderman connection.
