The Sadly Forgotten Mario Series 

We need a Mario game where it takes place in Sarasaland again. We have yet to see what Daisys Castle even looks like in the games.

It’s fascinating how technically there’s an ongoing story from Mario Land to Wario Land 2. That’s 4 games where the events of one directly lead to the next.

I really hope that whenever we see a new 2D Mario game, they should take a look back at these two games for inspiration. If they could introduce new worlds, power-ups, and new characters, it could be amazing!

What's also sad about Nintendo's refusal to acknowledge the Mario Land series is that it kinda takes away from Daisy's character too I think. If Sarsasaland was a more recognized locale in the Mario world and made more appearances and references in both spinoffs and mainline games, it could theoretically make Daisy herself more interesting seeing as she's supposed to be the ruler of it. Imagine if Princess Peach just existed in a vacuum with only the rare occasional mention of a "Mushroom Kingdom" that appeared ONCE in a short obscure gameboy game, and we knew of no other residents of the Musrhroom Kingdom like Toads, Toadette, Toadsworth, and locations like Princess Peach's castle were never truly fully realized and established... She'd just be some random princess character that just kinda exists. That's how it is for Daisy, because similarly Sarsasaland and by extension the Mario Land series gets microscopic attention from Nintendo. Heck- even Daisy herself is only relegated to sports and fighting spinoffs! Why hasn't she appeared in a mainline game, or Luigi's Mansion, or Paper Mario? It's all very unfortunate, and all relates back to Mario Land never getting the spotlight.

mario land 2 was a game i really warmed up to over time, the areas were really memorable and stuff like mario zone was strangely weird but not weird enough to feel out of place in a mario game

Fun fact: Wario was not only inspired by Bluto from Popeye but also Stromboli from Disney’s Pinocchio as well

Apparently the Sand Kingdom from Odyssey started out as potentially Birabuto...? That would've been such an awesome throwback and idk why they didn't go through with it. I like Mario Land 1 more but 2 is an awesome game that also deserves recognition. These are the games that shaped the company's handheld history (Land 1 being a launch title and Land 2 being overwhelmingly popular in its time). If not for them, we wouldn't have the GBA giving us the best potential fourth 2D Sonic games as a whole trilogy (the Sonic Advance series), nor the apex of the Pokemon franchise in the DS era (heck, we likely wouldn't even have Pokemon, or at least it wouldn't be as big of a success if the Game Boy itself wasn't). Even the competition it helped shape, with SEGA's Game Gear giving us titles like Tails Adventure. The Mario Land series absolutely deserves the recognition, as the titles that shaped what the Game Boy could do, while also being the most innovative 2D Mario titles to date in part thanks to console limitations (a true example of "restriction breeds creativity").

I think another reason these games are often overlooked is that for a long time people were kind of snobby about handheld games and didn't consider them "real" entries in their respective series for some reason.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the music in super Mario land 2. It’s one of Totaka’s absolute best works, and the theming and variations are absolutely stunning.

I loved Super Mario Land. It was the only game my doctor's office had on their Game Boys so I played it every time. Never owned it myself but I have vivid memories of playing it there.

It really is a shame that this series along with the Wario Land series have been completely forgotten by Nintendo. They're just so different from their usual output and that's what makes them so special.

This series is forgotten? I never forgot. Honestly in Super Mario Maker 2 with how the interface looks when making courses, you see there is room for more than just the addition of Super Mario 3D World. They should have added Super Mario Land 2 as a style. That would have been perfect! Making levels in the Super Mario Land 2 style would have been incredible!

I played Mario Land 2 lately. It was awesome ! The final castle level was SO DAMN HARD, but after dying multiple times, learning, going further and further, dying to Wario, then dying into the level again several and repeat this until I defeated Wario. It was so satisfying ^^

Super Mario Land 2 is still one of the most creative plataformers ever.

This series should at least be acknowledged with a remake. Also they abandoned the best named enemy, the F Boy.

No wonder Daisy is not treated like the main cast of Mario characters.

Imagine if there was a game where Wario is the new Bowser and Daisy is the new Peach. That would've been cool if this was actual platformer

I had a Game Boy before I got any consoles, so the two SML games were the first Mario games I owned. I love how almost every level in both games has its own visual theme with its own unique enemies. Most mainline Mario games, even the newer ones, have only 3 to 6 themes for all the levels in the game. Considering that Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga had references to almost every Mario game to date, including some obscure ones, I'm disappointed that there really weren't references to the Super Mario Land games. I guess there are Goombas with scuba helmets, like in the SML2 whale level, but nothing else I could think of.

Mario Land became Wario Land, and Wario Land is the greatest gaming series of all time. There's not a bad game in that bunch anywhere.

I think both Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2 The 6 Golden Coins should get the Links Awakening Remake treatment on thr Switch.

These games were so much fun back then, the gameplay is really cool with the new powerups, world's, and enemies. They also had great soundtracks with Super Mario Land 2 really having the greatest soundtrack. I still have these games.

I love Super Mario Land. It has a special place in my heart. It was the first Mario game I ever played. I was a Sega kid until I got a Gameboy and I loved that game so much. Replayed it a couple of weeks ago and the enjoyment was stilll there.

I've been saying for YEARS for them to have a new 2D mario game like new SMB but have mario & luigi visit sarasaland. Tatanga could team up with bowser or something.

SUPER MARIO LAND 2 SIX GOLDEN COINS WAS MY ENTIRE CHILDHOOD. I got a gameboy back in february, and I've been stuck on the boss for months- its honestly the best Mario game, with wonderful music and beautiful graphics. CRIMINALLY underrated.

Regardless that Wario has his own games like Wario Land and Wario Ware, I'm surprised that Wario hasn't been a boss in later Mario games since his debut in _Super Mario Land: 6 Golden Coins._ I wonder if there's a Mario game where Mario battle against Wario, who could be an antagonist or a side boss.

That was a smart transition, going from just Sonic videos to a Mario and Sonic video to a Mario video.

To answer a possible reason as to why these games don't get more love, I think it's due to them being VERY weird if you try to explain their aspects in the current context of Mario: - Daisy being Mario's love interest - Wario's absence from the other mainline games aside from the side games and spin-offs (the sport, party, and kart games) - The idea of Mario having a castle and/or private island when normally he just has a simple house - Not much alien iconography usage afterwards - Some of the very obvious real world parallels and concepts, plus a couple that MIGHT be copyright issues (mostly the Jason enemy type), although like you said Odyssey uses a lot of the same types of ideas - There not really being any obvious ties between Tatanga and Wario aside from one old character encyclopedia that only HINTS that Tatanga partnered up with Wario as revenge against Mario. (Also is weirdly only noted as "Alien" in preview material)

Super Mario Land 3 was such a great game. Had much fun with it. One of the first games I truely spend my time on trying to expand my castle. In part motivated by other kids at school who showed me their castle and I felt like I could do better :D

This was quite an amazing retrospective. Looking back, it's weird how Nintendo shoved Super Mario Land to the side when there was so much hype surrounding it back in the day, like that rap song you mentioned and even in a Pepsi promotion. Sadly, nowadays, people are quick to dismiss Super Mario Land, even going as far as saying the only reason why the Game Boy WAS successful was because of Pokemon. -_- Nothing against Pokemon (the older gens anyway), but like you mentioned, if it wasn't for that and Tetris. The Game Boy would have flopped, and maybe mobile gaming wouldn't exist for probably another 10 years or so. Despite having the DX hacks, and even New Super Mario Land on the SNES, I still hold onto to my hard copies of the original for the very reason you mentioned. If there's another game that is deserving of getting the Samus Returns treatment, it's definitely Super Mario Land. Also, no way you just did my man, Luigi dirty at 16:23. Put some respect in his name. lol

I’ve been saying for years if they want to get away from how stale 2D Mario has gotten, let’s go back to Sarasaland. Unique enemies, zones, etc. Bring back Tatanga as the baddie. Bring back the shooter levels. Expand on how unique the Land series was.

Chai Kingdom is one of Nintendo's best songs. Also SML2 for the Blurp sprite is the exact same as the SMW one.

its honestly dissapointing on how they treated the mario land series. It kinda looks like miyamoto and Co don't care about games/characters they didn't create. Would explain why daisy is getting such neglectfull treatment (her abscence in the new strikers game, the fact they scrapped adding sarasaland to Mario oddysey) and why the games were never re released. Man I wish we could still have these cool different and quirky, unique Mario Sidescrollers, they did a lot cool things before they were cool. Super Mario Land 2 did Mario Galaxy before it was cool.

You know, Wario Land was a great sequel to Six Golden Coins. It kept the powerup idea and had a thing where beating some levels altered previous ones. Wario Land 3 is my favourite game of all time. Wrote an essay on it awhile back about why it's the most unique metroidvania ever made. Did a reading of it on my channel just because. kiro talks, if you make a video on the Wario Land series, I give you permission to use the audio from said video where I read the essay and add in images or video clips you think would work with it. Could even say something like, "Take it away, wariodude" if you think my take on the game is better than anything you could say about it. Doubt you'll see this, but if you do please consider the suggestion.

I love how Nintendo listened to you , so they re-released Super Mario Land 2 for the Switch ( as a Nintendo Switch Online emulator game ).

Even as a Gen Zer I love Super Mario Land 2. I just played some of it yesterday on the new GameBOY Virtual Console and I gotta say, I love how uniquely weird it is. The references to fairy tales, pop culture, and even Nintendo's old "R&B" LEGO competitor from the 60's are so funny to me. I also love how it's the only Mario game that really has Mario setting a goal for himself rather than saving or doing quests for others; it's good variety from the usual princess-saving, and it shows he has a backbone for himself despite his selflessness. I even love the rabbit power-up! It's such a neat little thing, I'm considering getting that DX fan-remaster for my computer too.

I would absolutely love to see a double pack remake of the two Super Mario Land games. I love the vehicle rides in the first game and all of the wacky zones and the hard as hell final castle of the sequel.

Hell, Super Mario Land was my first Mario game! I'd honestly love to see Nintendo revisit Sarassaland someday. Maybe even have it's world rendered in a 3D platformer section like Super Mario Odyssey! :D

I loved this series! I have a theory that the Mario Land series is an alternate universe version of Mario, which is why his love interest is Daisy and he's not fighting Bowser and not in the Mushroom Kingdom

This was actually my very first Mario game ever, and it was a really good first impression, and being baffled that Mario was with Daisy instead of Luigi. It was a really fun and remember beating it all in one go was a challenge me and my brother made up (he won)

Cool fact: Ragumo (the mole enemies from Super Mario Land 2) are actually confirmed to be relatives of Monty Mole in several Japanese sources (in Super Mario-kun volume 6, they were even redesigned to look more like the Monty Mole design from said manga). I really thought it was cool that this obscure game expanded upon the Monty Mole lore by making a new relative to them that live in Mario’s private island for some reason. Still, it was really cool they were expanding the Monty Mole lore even early on considering the first Monty Mole species was not even Monty Mole and was Rocky Wrench (unlike the Galaxy games which just made a random ass completely separate mole species (Undergrunts) not even confirmed to be afflicted with the Monty Mole species, probably due to them being lazy and hideous) (also yes I do hate the Galaxy games)

My mom actually bought me that Super Mario Land song from Ambassadors of Funk on CD back in the day. I loved Super Mario Land 1 and 2 on Game Boy when I was a kid. Some lovely nostalgia right there.

i loved super mario compact disco!!!(especially go mario go & save me with your charm though odd princess daisy doesn't show up on the title.) i loved the uniqueness of the super mario land series especially interesting like the characters(especially princess daisy,wario & captain syrup.:3),the starman having the can can theme,mario having a castle that outside mario party haven't seen since,wario(he also had the same designer of samus aran from metroid.) getting his start getting tatanga to kidnap daisy(be funny if daisy referenced it still being miffed at wario for it.) and distract mario to take over(which the commercials really showed with how crazy he looked.) with him deciding to make his own castle after getting defeated trying to steal a princess peach(only time she shows up in any way in land.lol) statue from captain syrup and sarasaland being based on different areas of the world. i remember hearing originally in odyssey along with isle delfino sarasaland was going to appear with princess daisy searching for the moons(if not a multiplayer mode that should've been luigi's spot helping her instead of a broken minigame.) and nintendo really needs to start showing focus to these(instead of 3d all stars for mario's 35th it should've been a collection of the sports,rpg's & other spinoff's.)/their other non pokemon and zelda franchises as i'd love to see more from land like princess daisy being in a 3d game(think she should've been in the year of luigi as i love the 2's moments together/show how they met after mario saved her.:3),the style of level traveling & bringing back captain syrup.(would love to see her in the warioware games/the main villain of a new wario land game with waluigi & the warioware gang helping wario.)

Smol correction, those are not teeth in the whale level. Ribs instead. That aside, these games were a lot longer-lasting on the OG system. You had to account for battery life for one and irate (grand)parents disliking the music. Since Nintendo can't appreciate them though, these are games you have to play any way you can. And 6 Golden Coins is definitely amazing.

It saddens me that the more popular and brandlike the Mario franchise gets the more "safe" and "clean" Nintendo makes their games. If you go back to the Gamecube era you have so many creative and fun titles, like thousand year door, sunshine, mario strikers and more. I also think that miyamoto has some very "specific" game design visions that keep these mario games so sterile of any creative and explorative input. One example being that he wanted no "costume" toads in sticker star, only some basic colour ones with no new variants that would make them somehow special.

I love both these games. I own the original Mario Land for my Game Boy Colour, and I bought both Mario Land games on my 3DS. I've finished or at least gotten close to finishing both, & I loved playing both of them. With how different they are to the standard Mario formula, I'd love to see some of this magic return for a new Mario game, whether 2D or 3D!

I wish an new 2D Mario game would go as something as World & Land 2 were rather having the crummy/repetitiveness New Super Mario Bros. series that we got. Also, I would love an new Wario Land game on the Switch. That would be cool.

6 golden coins was the first game boy game I ever had. I still have the cartridge. I loved that game, especially the tree level, and the hippo level. Something about the bubble really got me.

Isn't it obvious why these have only been rereleased once since their original release? It's because only the 3DS thus far has offered anything resembling a virtual console for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. Sure, the Wii U had GBA games, but took no part in the original GB or GBC games. I imagine if Switch Online does get a GB/GBC service, these games would quickly join that service. So really the only rerelease I think we can feasibly say we've missed out on for these games this far, would have been DX color rereleases for the GBC like Link's Awakening saw (though rom hackers have made this a reality in recent years regardless). And I think its clear that Nintendo does still respect and acknowledge the Land games in the modern age, ever notice how Super Mario 3D Land was on a portable system, and Super Mario 3D World was on a home console? That's not a coincidence, its an homage to the fact that the original Land was on a portable while the original World was on a home console.

Well, they were re-released for the 3DS and are still available to buy today.

No one has forgotten this series. The people who knew about it remembers it very well. The thing is, it's been decade's... Kids now a days just have never heard about these games and have no interest so current generations just missed on gaming history. Me personally, know these games inside and out, and love them all.

Seeing many Princess Daisy videos, I can take the honor of admitting the fact that Daisy and Peach are not the same character. Unfortunately, in the 1990s, many people didn't know that Daisy was a different character. What blinded their judgement is the fact that, in her earlier appearances, Daisy didn't look different much different from Peach. It didn't help that Peach was very popular at the time anyway. As a result, Daisy suffered an identity crisis for one decade. I blame their weak mindset for not understanding that Daisy was different from Peach to begin with. It must have sucked being a Princess Daisy fan back in the 1990s because marketing in America was very xenophobic at the time and many people didn't know that Daisy was a different character. This was because they were too focused on Princess Peach. Even if many people take the fact that Daisy is Peach's tomboyish doppelganger in a mocking way, it is the truth. I'm happy Nintendo deep down admitted that Daisy and Peach are not the same character. We were too young to understand Princess Daisy in the 1990s, but I'm glad she is still in video games today. It was hard for us to understand Daisy when she first appeared in Super Mario Land, but we knew deep down that Daisy and Peach are two different Nintendo princesses. They say imitation is the greatest source of flattery, but people aren't seeing much flattery with Princess Daisy. While I see that Daisy's video game appearances are more restrictive compared to Princess Daisy, it's true Nintendo is being respectful to video game properties.

I still play Super Mario Land 2! Had it since I was a little kid and always feel great bringing out my classic transparent Gameboy. Super Mario Land as a whole despite it’s differences and such is really neat. I continue loving the 2nd one the most after playing it since I was a toddler and whatnot but I’m hoping they both get more attention thanks to this with time.

To be honest, I thought those enemies balancing on balls in the Mario Zone were one-eyed pigs. But much later I learned that they were actually bears. And now that I look at them I also recognize them as bears.

Yeah without a doubt Mario 2 was awesome and just to throw it out there those of you that don't know it I know downloading roms can be a little taboo for some people but just to throw it out there this DX versions of super Mario Land 1 and 2 now that are easily found on the internet so you can play them and color now if you don't know what that means there's no patches involved or anything you can just search it right online and just download the DX versions it's similar to how they made Zelda DX for those of you that aren't no there was an original one of that for game Boy then they remade it in color now they never did this officially keep in mind this is all made by fans and an extra little perk just to let people know when you play Mario Land 2 DX you can play as Luigi as well

i played both these games on the 3ds and honestly theyre two of my favourite 2d marios i think id even rank mario land 2 as my second favourite just behind smb3 the super ball flower in mario maker 2 was so nice to see since both these games go unrecognised and i absolutely love them even just throwbacks like mentions or references to sarasaland or mario land (the place) would be awesome. imagine odyssey dlc or odyssey 2 where we get to explore mario land and marios castle or having a new super mario bros game have you go to sarasaland and getting to see new levels for their cool themes in the modern mario style
