I just love how this 90 year old comes out from behind the curtain standing tall (clearly over 6 feet), erect, shoulders square, no cane, not shuffling like an old man. If I'm blessed enough to live that long that's how I want to be.
I remember the time that Johnny had Burt on the show and he asked him about what bothered him the most at his age. He said something about having to get up and answer the phone only to find that it's a salesman He said 'You know Johnny I had a guy call me yesterday and try to sell me a 25 year annuity contract. I said, Son at my age I don't even buy green bananas!"
Always wondered this actors name. When my grandma was in her late 90s the doc asked her how she feels and if she had any complaints, she responded “ I feel fine except for the fact that my head bobbles”. The doc asks “ has that happened to anyone else in your family?”. My grandma responds “ I don’t know, none of them lived to be this old”
I met Burt Mustin in 1964 in SanAntonio Texas, hotel THE EL TROPICANO I was 8 years old and my father introduced him. At the time I didn't know who he was, then he told me he does acting jobs on tv and was on leave it to Beaver and Andy Griffith show. Said later your dad will point me out to you on tv, and then you can remember who you talked to. He was a very nice man, really kind to us kids. So now I know I met him. Thanks Burt.
I love how Carson listens, doesn't butt in and genuinely loves the stories, and his guests. I can't stand Fallon or Letterman they talk too much. Burt was sharp and I love Doris Day, she gives him a standing ovation, class.
Walid Aladssani Kimmel sucks now he’s become so political! As a true Hollywood Liberal he’s obsessed w Trump! There are quite a few PC errors Kimmels made in his career! He’s now become a pos!
I know what you mean.. TODAY'S talk shows are a JOKE. they are NOTHING but POLITICS. I don't care if you like Trump or not or whoever, but do I have to hear about it every show? so sick of that. I don't watch talk shows anymore. Letterman was ok, he had many great guest. he was not my favorite by any means, but was ok. a lot better than the shows they have today. NOBODY will ever top JOHNNY CARSON. he was and will always be the KING of talk show.
if the show called for an old character, it was very likely to be him.... He even appeared as a character on the Monkees! I'm not kidding. He played a very old Tarzan character.....
Burt Mustin was such a class and good hearted guy. He projected a positive attitude, kindness, humility, decency, and humor. I liked how Doris Day stood up and greeted him. You could see the affection, respect, and love she had for Burt Mustin. Burt Mustin saw a lot in his life such as poverty, WWI, WWII, Great Depression, Turmoil in the 1960s, the Cold War, Vietnam and Korean War. He represented what was great about America. We could all learn from this mans life. I was four years old when this episode of the JC Show appeared in 1974. Sometimes we all need to take a step back and just be thankful for what we have. His memory be eternal.
He will always be Quigley to me. Burt Mustin appeared on all in the family as Mr. Quigley. He was also fireman Gus on leave it to beaver. He was one of the best character actors ever.
@@trvman1how right you are. The idiot resident shuffling around in the White House cannot even speak clearly. He and his administration are the most corrupt ever. Sorry. I didn't mean to get all in to the political stuff .... just can't wait for 2024.
Burt Mustin was on almost every television show imaginable he was also a very modest man and preferred being a character actor. When asked for an autograph he would often sign "Burt Mustin 'Boy Actor."
What a great man! Actors today should take a page out of Burt Mustins book. Humble, authentic, and enjoys making people laugh without cussing, that’s talent.
Bert Mustin was my favorite character actor of all time bar none, soft spoken, elegantly turned out and sharp as a tack at all times. I loved him as a child in just about every role he chose to play and still do. What an awesome man he was. I miss him to this day.
Was thinking, someone please give him a drink of water! He was nothing short of amazing! He really was everywhere on tv in my childhood. Rest in Peace, Burt.
I remember he appeared in a couple episodes of The Monkees. One as an island native and a butler in a Christmas episode. Then he appeared in one Brady Bunch episode as Jethro Collins. An old cowboy who told Bobby about how Jesse James murdered his father when he was a boy.
He is so sharp and focused even at age 90. I also note that the Tonight Show in those days was 90 minutes every night and the guests stuck around and just moved down the couch. Notice too that Rodney Dangerfield and Johnny were both puffing on a cigarette.
*I remember when "The Tonight Show" was a 105-minutes!* (Network-news at 11:00 pm was done by 11:15, so that left a huge chunk of time open until sign-off at 1:30 am and in large populations, sometimes 2 am)
Correct Mark, that's why they both died of cigarette-induced diseases.. Johnny Carson of emphysema and Rodney Dangerfield of heart disease from too much booze, cigarettes and pot smoking.
@@hankaustin7091 What a way to go....Johnny was 77 and Rodney close behind. They bhoith had long lives and enjoyed every minute. Not like you Mr Negative, you will die young
Burt should give us all inspiration ! I was feeling old at 58, and I've gotta quit feeling sorry for myself, and look forward with New dreams and Anticipations in my life . Burt was awesome, and shows us, keep "living", keep going, until the Good Lord calls us home.
Va c c i n e s are largely to blame for the sorry fitness levels today along with fluoridated water, GMOs and glyphosate. The truth is a mirro-image to the news..
I had no idea Burt Mustin could sing! I knew he'd been a marvelous actor and was in a zillion tv shows by the time this aired in 1974. but just had no idea he could sing! Excellent video!
All those old actors could sing: Carol O'Connor and Jean Stapleton, Carol Burnett, Hal Linden, Jerry Orbach, Buddy Ebsen. Sometimes they'd sing poorly for comedic effect or to be in character.
From memory - no googling - All in the family: Mr Quigley (i think), who could add up the prices for the groceries in his head, and Gloria was trying to help him not lose his job, and he was playing an old man then. Also, i always thought he looked like tweety bird, so i was always aware of him when he was on a show. Big part of my childhood (B. 1961).
@@thegameshowguy1 So true. It's sad to say, but people born in the 20's are quickly becoming the lost generation. Doc's had quite a career, quite a legacy, and lots of progeny. He will be sorely missed someday, too. I hope he's in good health.
So it was Bert Mustin who played the old guy in so many 70s TV shows (including a funny All in the Family segment). He was sharp as a tack at 90. What an inspiration!
Burt Mustin was a 'character' in many, many comedies during the '60s and '70s. I remember that he wanted to play a game of horseshoes with Fred Sanford when Lamont was trying to put Fred in the Nursing Home. Burt Mustin was part of the Golden Age of TV.
That guy always reminded me of turtle with out his shell. A good wife is worth more than all the gold in Hollywood. Gee Johnny I’m glad to be here,, of course at my age I’m just darn glad to be anywhere.
i have a notion to second that emotion ! Not only was he still pretty dang spry at 90 but his mind was sharp as a tack ! Bless his little ol' pea pickin' heart, as Tennessee Ernie Ford used to say !! :-)
I remember Burt from the Twilight Zone in the episode Night of the Meek with Art Carney. And in the Brady Bunch where he played a relative of Jessie James explaining to Bobby he wasn't a hero, he was a mean dirty killer. Burt was a great actor.
Burt was a treasure. I remember these appearances with Johnny in real time - 1975 I was halfway thru high school and watched Johnny every night. So good to see these old clips. R.I.P. to everyone on that stage.
I was also in high school in 1975.I remember seeing him on The TS,but I can't remember if it was this episode. It's sad that all those people are not alive any more.
I got the whole Dragnet series. And if I recall right, he is listed as different characters in maybe 10 episodes. That is how good Jack Webb thought he was. When Jack Webb knew how good you were. You had a steady job for him.
Neat..tbhe one thing I bet he didn't do, surpringly given experience and voice, was cartoon voices (another real old timer I mentioned, humorlous, was Charles Lane, who did do z voice, like the eccentric millionaire in ARISTOCATS.And Burt also was a semi regular in BEAVER!)
Easily one of my favorite character actors ever. His Greatest role was in the Dragnet Episode from 1969 called Homicide:DR-22 Season 3, Episode 14. Just a delightful guy and a great actor.
Loved watching Doris and Burt in the background as the credits ran. Two old friends, and two most genuinely nice people, reconnecting and sharing a warm moment.
I remember this guy. He played in all sorts of shows. The Andy Griffith Show, Sanford and Son, and many others. Wow, he was 90 in 74. He would be 134 years old today.
Burt graduated from Pennsylvania Military College (PMC), now Widener University, in 1903. He remains one of our most beloved alumni. He passed away in 1977 at the age of 92. In his memory the theater in Widener’s Alumni Auditorium was named “Burt Mustin Theater.” That was quite an honor since another well known PMC alumnus was Cecil B. DeMille, one of Hollywood’s most famous movie producers.
Bert was always thin and in good shape. Obviously helped him live a long, productive life. I remember him mostly as Gus in Leave It Beaver and in Jud in Andy Griffith.

Loved it when he used to talk to the Beaver. Great guy. I don't know where all the great folks have gone. But happy I saw so many when I was little. Amazing people. I've known them all my life. Loved this.
Wow ! Double Wow !! Triple Wow !!! What a great joy & delight to watch ! The late great Mr Mustin was a true national treasure ! THANKS so much for uploading for us to enjoy ! CHEERS !! :-)
Three years after this appearance on January 28, 1977, Mustin died at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California, less than two weeks before his 93rd birthday.
Remember Burt in "The Ghost And Mr. Chicken"? Loved when he handed Don Knotts the flashlight then shook his hand. Just musing.. God Bless you Mr. Mustin.
Fun wonderful I love the way people acted and the way they conducted themselves then . It's refreshing to here and see . Today curtacy and seance are not so common as they used to be. A hug and a kiss on the check isn't so much either . When your 90 that's what keeps your Heart pumping . Anything else you may kick the bucket with a Big smile
Wow!, I have NEVER heard someone of that great age with such a strong excellent voice...he died a few years later...and such a Sharp mind...would that my mind would be so Sharp should I make it to 90...Wow
A great actor. Loved seeing him on leave it to beaver as beavers friend gus and brady bunch as the guy whos father was killed by jesse james. One of the best actors.
Wow. Just wow. Burt. What a classic American character. He was on Bewitched. This town of Hollywood/Burbank was so small back then. I'm so proud to be a tiny part of this industry.
I knew about Burt Mustin through an All in the Family episode which I recently saw, he was great there and a delight to hear in this Johnny Carson's show. Great TV times.
It doesn't seem like such an anomaly now, given that the likes of Kirk Douglas, Bob Hope, Tony Bennett and Doris Day all made it well past 90. But in Burt Mustin's prime, he was regarded as remarkable for longevity alone. It certainly didn't hurt that he was also one of the most gifted actors of all time, either. He is greatly, greatly missed.
He sure was! (Is!) But to me he'll always be Kimba The Jungleman in the Monkees episode Monkees Marooned! (Sort of a cross between 'The Most Dangerous Game' & 'Treasure Island'!
I turned 58 in October and except for my aching, creaking, cracking, popping old body and bones, and a lot of grey hair, I would swear it seems like yesterday that I was still in my thirties, working 12 hour days and helping my wife raise our four children. Now I'm a grandpa six times over! Time flies by so fast as you get older that I am trying to spend as much time with all of my kids and grandkids as I can. I am an LA/St.L/LA RAMS fan and have been since the '69-'70 season. They didn't win a Super Bowl until 1999-2000 when they won SB XXXIV (34), so that was the first in thirty years, then it took them 22 years to win SB LVI (56) this last season. It really didn't sink in how many years had flown by so fast between SB wins until I remembered watching their first SB win with my dad who passed suddenly in 2008, and it didn't feel the same when the game was over and only my sister, who is 11 years older than I am, was there to watch the game and celebrate with me. I am just old enough and having much older siblings, I remember seeing Burt Mustin on many programs from the sixties and seventies, In fact, I just watched the episode of Adam-12 "The chaser" that origionally aired 12/6/72 where Mustin played a Hippy hating crotchity old geezer, and I recently saw the episode of Dragnet where he was an ex police officer that helped Joe Friday and Bill Gannon solve a murder.
