First issue on the 91 GMC C3500. Very common loose steering column. Four bolts on the inside get loose over time. This is how I fix that.

Not sure how you convert cruise control to a non cruise column. You might be able to move your cruise control lever to the old column. That would require taking it all apart to get wiring run through it. Not positive it would work because I have never done it.

Please make a video to depict this..... These instructions are for the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala (Eighth generation) Turn Signal Cancelling Cam replacement. Once you use a PowerBuilt Streering Wheel Removal Set RENTAL from AutoZone to remove the steering wheel, after you removed the airbag, then you must use "snap-ring pliers" to remove the snap-ring from the Steering Air Coil Kit GM part # 26089982, 26088931, or 26092622 aka "Clock Spring". The next step is that one must use the Lisle 57340 Steering Wheel Lock Plate Tool and a small vicegrip to compress the turquoise/emerald spring, which pop the "Lock Plate Ring" GM part # 05694191 up from the lock plate. You can use picks - mine were from AutoZone - to move the lock plate ring from the lock plate... Once removed, then you'll be able to slide the "Turn Signal Cancelling Cam" GM part # 26086061 off the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247. You must be very careful NOT to disrupt the connection of the "Bearing Spring Set" GM part # 15231641 and "Bearing Kit" GM part # 26001827 from the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247.

Too bad no one actually shows the left side of a video. I've been working for hours trying to get the column showing how to re assemble the hi low beam switch. Good news is l did take photos of all the parts before disassembling the column... I had to reffer to them several times. The more angles the better. - - - - Time passed, l have now fixed it. Ok on the tilt control there is a little box that surrounds it in this box there is a plastic actuator that slides up and down controlled by the high beam switch part of the smart switch. The actuator has a scalloped base which the rod's curved part fits nicely into. The heavy grease kinda keeps everything in place. The actuator needs to be slide upward so the rod can be put into position. This process can take as many as 5 times to get it to work properly. Be patient. What should take a short time is very fiddly. Be patient. Have good light. When all comes together it will slip together smoothly. Think like the manufacturer. Make sure the rod is in the switch at the base of the column. Now that this is in assembly of the cowling and the smart switch should go well. Now test the switch action make sure it clicks properly. Now you can re- assemble the rest. Remember no extra parts they are all needed. Back to the RU-vid video... good luck

i just replaced mine yesterday on my 89 chevy g20 van, the switch isn't in the steering column on that, its the dimmer switch in a panel near the pedals. there was a long rod that moves when you hit the high beam switch, that rod goes into the dimmer switch and pushes it to turn them on and off. I saw it when you were taking it apart it made kind of like a spring noise and then that whole little bearing thing with the tube metal pieces fell out along with bearings behind it. The tilt is loose or the whole column? Check mounting bolts under dash. Did you put the spring back in the tilt? Did you put the tilt mechanism back right? Your bearings looked good when you took them out? Other than that not sure.
@KeepItMowed
@KeepItMowed 6 лет назад
Yep put everything thing back in right. The part where the four torx screws go in is loose even though the bolts are tight.
@mossman381
@mossman381 6 лет назад
That is odd. Might have to pull the whole column and take it apart.
@coeneschamaun1735
@coeneschamaun1735 3 года назад
Keep it Mowed, those 4 screws have to bolt to something, that bolts to something to do with steering front end parts, right? Did you ever figure out what was loose?
@KeepItMowed
@KeepItMowed 3 года назад
@@coeneschamaun1735 Yeah the casting where the four screws were was cracked where the shaft ball went. I ended up finding the whole column for $50 from a guy on Craigslist list. Took me about 40 minutes to remove and install new used one. Works great, no dealing with parts and what ifs.

Would it be easier for me to take the whole steering column assembly out and have a shop rebuild it for me and then I can just install it myself? I have a 1990 GMC C1500 that has all the internal parts inside the steering gutted out and I don’t know what’s missing but it looks like the majority of the parts were damaged and thrown away. It looks like a crime scene and all that is left is the steering wheel.
@mossman381
@mossman381 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I would take it to a professional or go on ebay and buy a rebuilt one.

I had to start the truck and turn the wheel to get a better angle. Be careful when starting the truck with everything disassembled. I thought I explained it in the video.

your horn doesnt work because there is supposed to be a wire running from your horn button down to the round plastic tube on the column
@mossman381
@mossman381 5 лет назад
I know. I made a piece of wire and got the horn working. Someone was in the column and left pieces out.

If you can't put something back together after you take it apart then you probably should stop taking stuff apart. Not trying to be a smart ass but just a suggestion.

I broke my horn piece going back together. also somehow the spring that works the steering lock had jumped out of place and it took me quite a spell finding the correct location of it. You did a jam up job of cleaning up everything. Great video Great job.

I noticed a little while after this video that my steering lock doesn't work. I know the spring is in place but for some reason it isn't locking the steering wheel. I actually prefer the steering wheel to not lock so I guess I will leave it. :)
