Three months from now some buddies and I are going to ride from the Washington, DC area to Chicago and then to Los Angeles via Rout 66 on motorcycles. I bought a non-running 1994 Honda GL1500 Goldwing Aspencade for the trip.
This video is the removal of the aftermarket heel/toe shifter and the installation of a shifter support bracket to solve the common Goldwing problem of too much play in the shifter arm. I purchased this shifter support bracket myself from Amazon. No one is sponsoring this video.
Shifter Support found here: a.co/d/g5MKrU6
Follow along as I get it ready for its maiden voyage.

Hi Clay, I ended up taking my footboards off. The position of them made riding very uncomfortable and when stopping they were constantly getting in the way. The original foot pegs with highway pegs make for smooth and easy long miles.

Did you find that thing at the bottom of a lake?

Mid-Atlantic.... not as bad as upstate NY or Michigan, but challenging.

Well worth doing this but get the original shifter pivot if you can. This cheap import will work for a while but will wear quickly since there's no Teflon bushing. Yeah the good one is 4X the price but you only have to install it once. Buy once/cry once.

The difference was unbelievable. The bike was almost impossible to shift and after the support bracket install, shifting was precise and predicable, everytime.

so the chinesium ones work hu? I have heard all kinda bad things about them and I wanted to get a real one with the bushing guy has his web site shut down for some odd reason. i do have a chinesium one though for free from a guy that ordered one off eBay and then said that it was junk and gave it to me. I have Markland floorboards and heal toe shifter, sloppy sloppy. I mean, I didn't get to ride it before the boards so I really dont know how normal shifters are on these Gold wings but also, never had floorboards or heel toe on anything I ever rode. so maybe I will try this china one out and worst that could happen is it breaks and I have to take it off eh? I will make sure to have all these tools with me. also maybe I find a real one. Or hey? do you think the metal is "Challenged" on that thing? maybe I could take it down to the shop and have it bored and a bushing put in. looked like yours is like mine with a little slop gap in the pivot. UGH. oh! i think I would do that trimming thing with a dremmel cut off wheel. My Bike looks better than yours Ha! LMAO

Yes, the cheap shifter support worked fine I bought mine from Amazon. I could not even shift before. These are so cheap you could swap one out if they wear out. It makes a huge difference.

@@claytongerber I was thinking I could take one down to the machine shop and have them install a bushing for that post, also, get a decent stainless steel washer from the farm store. looks like the bolt that goes into the bike will need to be a tag longer also, I was thinking I could get one that is not all thread and that would cut down on some wear also. I noticed the guy that has the video that made these first improved on them by putting the clamp Bolt on the OTHER side so that you tighten it from the front instead of the back. The small bolt that comes with the chinesium is Smaller than the originals it is a 4, the oem guy used a 5. so that could be tapped threaded to a slightly larger better clamp bolt. It get the head out of the way of stuff and is easier to get to that way. also, a good time to put a new seal on that shaft. I think rather than bending that heat shield (good idea really) I could used a Dremmel cut off wheel . I like that better than what most folks are doing and sloppy cutting up their shield with tin snips. either way, Bending or dremmel, is better than snips in my opinion. I am going to take a look at my heel toe linkage as well, seems like all the little parts get pretty worn, Hoping I can get a little less slack from doing some cheapo hardware replacement. I can still shift ok but I can see where it's all going. LOL best to nip that in the Butt @ lowest miles possible.

@@claytongerber yeah, thats the one that is two weeks worth of groceries for me more than the chinesium one LOL. i might end up getting one if this one doesn't work out. with the tax and shipping on that one it;s like 84.00 the bushing and bolt and my work will be about 3 or 4 bucks.
