Jim - I just want to thank you for your clear, simple, useful videos on repairing the Snapper riding mowers. My wife and I recently acquired a used Series 14 rider (with 9 HP engine and 28-inch blade.) Thanks to your videos I soon learned how to replace the missing axle boots, how to find and replace the safety switch under the seat, how to replace the drive belt and the friction drive wheel and a bunch of other info that would have utterly mystified me were it not for your videos. I also began to appreciate how simple, sturdy and reliable these machines are. If they gave a Pulitzer Prize for How-To videos on RU-vid, you would deserve one. In lieu of that, I’m sending you a small token of thanks via PayPal. Sincerely, A grateful viewer in Georgia, USA

Get'n ready to replace boots,driven disc ( with liner.....I agree with you on the metal banded brake,The liner setup is iffy,reckon we'll see) first polishing the hex,then adding StaLube Moly to sliding gearbox ( as well as filling both gear box & chain case with said lube) ,then Ft steering rod bushings,new belt,LOF,full synthetic,then sharpen & balance the blade.Thank you kindly from one Pro to another.....Ralph BTW & for your tips n tricks.....My 28 Hi Vac's driven disc rubber went completely away & ate at the drive plate a bit....Pulled the spark plug,got my 90* die grinder with 40,then 80 grit paper on the plate while a budie pulled the starter rope slowly...Re-surfaced it,with out removing any material to speak of, like a charm 😎

I respectfully went a different way. I was just about to the cut slots method when I went another way. For $70 I bought a 5 ton gear puller at Harbor Frieght Tools ! Some of the best money I've ever spent. I came around the corner with that 5 ton puller and I could almost hear my Snapper "Oh hell no. Here's the hub, I surrender.". It only took 4 pumps !

The boot on the right side supplies lube to the wheel bearing, if I'm not mistaken. The left boot protects the axle and makes shifting easier.

One quick question-when you take the left fender off, is there any possibility of the mower collapsing to that side? Most would still have the deck on while doing this, and the added weight could be a factor. I know you have to have done it this way at some time. Just a quick yes or no. Thank you

Great video Jim. I replaced my clutch disk today (using one of your videos as a reference) and I noticed that the boot closest to the clutch disk had a couple holes in it and grass and dirt had gotten in. Only saw holes in one boot but will probably go ahead and do both while I've got it apart. Is there a certain type of lubricant that I should use on the shaft? I have a one pedal 28" RER, Model 281223BVE and I think it has short boots on both sides, but I'll double check before ordering. Thanks so much for doing these videos. Snapper should use your videos as repair guides for DIY folks.

These videos are great! I'm trying to replace the boots but the center chain case and clutch assembly won't just slide off the hex shaft. Everything is detached and nothing is holding it. It won't slide in either direction, left or right. Any ideas? It looks so simple in the video.
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 2 месяца назад
Well, you either have a burr on the end of your hexagon tube, stopping the chain case from sliding off or there’s so much dirt in between the tube and the chain case that it’s stuck, shooting some WD-40 in and rinsing out the sand. Jim

Mr. Jim, I am undertaking the task of replacing my boots and I have two questions for you sir. What side play os allowed between the axles where the shims go and in which gear do you obtain the measurement? The second or third question that I have for you is my mower won't go fully into reverse. I did catch the handle on a pole once upon a time and my neutral gear is difficult to find at sometimes. I believe that my gear lever is the culprit. What is your thought on that problem? Thank you for your replies in advance. Don

Jeremy Wade Hi Jeremy If you’re talking about a Snapper rear engine rider they’ll either have bushings or bearings in the rear fenders for your drive train, if you have side to side play on your rear axle you’ll have to put nylon shim washers in between the left-hand bushing in the end of the hexagon tube to illuminate the side play. Update. Got mine finished after taking my 3 inch Ingersoll rand cutoff tool with 150 psi for about 30 minutes and cut the wheel hub off completely horizontal to the rear axle. After that, all downhill. Just for Prev. Maintenance, took the chains drive things apart and filled them up with a quart of OO grease. Along with a new drive disc and some other things, $ 100 in this and a few hours worth of work. But not too bad to make the drivetrain essentially new again after 18 years. As well as it is built, I don't think you could tear it up unless you tried. I've seen plastic parts in some other mowers gearboxes.

Ron Wilson If you have a long round part on the bottom of your float bowl that is your solenoid that shuts off your gas you have to wire that in to your ignition switch or your stater between the stater and the diode in the wire otherwise your engine won’t get any fuel in it won’t run. Jim

What can I do to get the flange off
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 6 лет назад
Chase McCloud Hi Chase. This is Jim I have a video it's number 39 if you're subscribed you'll be able to find it it shows how to get the wheel flanges off if you can't get them loose with a wheel puller by it self then you're gonna have to cut it the way I did and pull them off that way if you cut them 90° to the bolt hole. You'll be able to put them back on and use the bolt to hold them in place you shouldn't have to replace them but when you put your wheel puller on don't put it on the outer edge of the flange where I'm showing in the video if you put too much pressure on it it will bend where you want to put it is down on the flat area is close to the hub as you can. If you have any trouble or questions just let me know thanks Jim

Depending on what model machine you have take the battery out, shut the gas vent off and stand the machine up on its rear bumpers it’s made to do this
@NoferTrunions
@NoferTrunions Месяц назад
@@jimjackson9381 yes, mine can be stood up. My problem is I'm too old and too fat to work that low to the ground. I was thinking once up, I could rock it side to side adding a 2-by each time and crib it up. I have a beam in garage I can lift from but not enough head room to lift the entire machine up on its front end "lift tabs." NOTE: someone mentioned there are bottom covers that would fit from other models (European?) or could fab a cover. (actually that makes a LOT of sense. LOL could even make one utilizing Trex tape which has insane adhesive strength which I think is greater than Gorilla tape.)
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 Месяц назад
@@NoferTrunions if you have a garage with open rafters that looks sturdy enough to support the weight I would go down to your local tractor supply or Farm and Fleet or a local hardware and buy yourself a rope hoist that will lift them up extremely easy That way, you don’t have to try to to lift the weight

Hey Jim, my Snapper from 1987 (Model: 28086) needs new boots. Are both boots the same size and part number nowadays? The last time I went through replacing boots, I seem to recall there being a long and a short boot, with different part numbers, in the past. Can you confirm one way or the other? Thanks
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 6 лет назад
Peter Hey Peter it's Jim I looked up on parts tree description page and according to that one of your boots are long, and one is Standard,(or short). They both are the same price $7.77. If you have any other questions or issues please feel free to email me or put the question in the box below the videos thanks again Jim

@e1701a 6 лет назад
Thanks Jim. I just checked PartsTree and I see the pictures where it shows a long boot for LH fender and a shorter one for the RH fender, but to my surprise, both are the same part number. Seems strange. I also saw that they list the original part numbers for the boots, so I googled them both (7011011 for RH boot and 7017084 for LH boot) and some aftermarket gray colored boots came up in the results, where one was actually longer than the other by maybe an inch or so? They didn't look like they were rubber..maybe plastic? Hmm, I'm a little confused. Did your 28" display model Snapper use equal length boots when you last replaced them? It looks very similar to mine. Thanks again.
@jimjackson9381
@jimjackson9381 6 лет назад
Peter Hi Peter it's Jim I checked my model number on my working model with the electric motor on it and it calls for one long boot in one short boot, on the model I took one short boot and cut it in half and put it on both sides but it's a nice rubber boot in it stretches without any issues if you pick up one of the cheaper aftermarket ones that are well I don't know if there are plastic or not but they're not really Rubber you may need the long one and the short one. If you have any other questions just let me know. Talk to you soon Jim. Oh yeah don't forget to send me a picture of you and your snapper I'd like to have it on my wall.
@e1701a
@e1701a 6 лет назад
Hey Jim, thanks again. After talking with you, I think I'm going to get two of the Snapper brand short rubber boots. If it stretches ok, like you said, then I think those will hold up a lot longer than the non-rubber aftermarket ones. I'd rather do it right the first time around. As for a picture, I have 5 Snappers, so I'll call it a group photo..LOL Happy New Year!

Well, I need some information. Need to know if your machine has bearings in the fenders or bushings. You can send me some pictures that would help to. jimsfixitshop@gmail.com Those dust caps have been obsolete for over 20 years. They don’t have the hard plastic ones anymore now there are softer material and they have lip seals pushed into each one and they are different sizes for the right and left-hand side of your machine. If you send me an email use your email to return and I’ll send you a picture of the dust and lip seals with part numbers and the prices that they were the last time I bought them. Jim

@@jimjackson9381 Jim, i’ve got it figured out, I found some automotive seals that fit over each shaft because one is smaller than the other and I used a flexible, rubber cap. It almost looks like it’s off a spray bomb, but it worked good. I used the whole saw to cut out the hole for the axle size and then, I took a red rubber that goes over a rancho off-road shock absorber it’s accordion like and I think it’s going to work well. Thanks for responding to my comment. Keep up the great work. I love the set up in your shop.
