In this video I am going to disassemble the rear end in Bruce’s 42 inch Snapper. If you have any questions or comments please leave them in the box below or send me an email. And as always work safe have fun and keep on Snappen . Jim
Hey Jim, I had watched this video once before and back then it didn't look that bad until I have to go through it.. Can't believe that all this disassembly for dust boots. Oh well, now I need to get the back wheels on to get that deck off.
I absolutely love watching your videos. I watch them because I grew up around Snappers and now I am actually learning how to disassemble and work on them, thank you very much Jim! - Chad Crawford, Chickamauga GA
You didn't think I was going to walk over there did you? There is a fine line between lazy and intelligent!! We love you Jim! I just got a snapper rear engine rider going last night and I mowed with it up until 11:30 p.m. :-) I just wore my headlight which works pretty good but I think I will see about installing some lights on it because it was so much cooler last night after the sun went down.
@@jimjackson9381 Cool!! I will have to check it out I just came in from spending another hour on the Snapper rear engine rider started before 6 a.m. I'm done mowing with it now for a while.
Hey Jim ! You sure know your way around those RER Snappers , If I was doing that tear down I'd have a whole box of Zip Lock bags & a Sharpie to catalog everything . I had to laugh when You decided to put the gloves on , I do the same thing. I was noticing that You where on your knees quite a bit! Ever think about getting some knee pads, Or one of those mechanic carts like the one they use for break work , I bought one about 2 years ago from Sears & yes you know where it was made but they are knee savers & they are very well made & it beats being on your knees.I can't wait to see this back together & thank You again for your help with your informative videos. ( SNAPPOUT )
I have 2 42 inches snappers. The one I use now has a better height deck adjuster and newer square type steering wheel with a Briggs 16 hp engine the other a Kohler. The older one I use as a back up. Having issues with it pulling uphill and speed right now. Just got it back from my mechanic and its not any better. I watch your videos but glad to see you have issues getting things off too. Maybe I will dive into it again and try to fix it myself. Right now I almost ready to make them boat anchors except I don't own a boat. I like the snapper 42' because it sits low to the ground and I live in a hilly area of North Georgia and the 16 hp has plenty of power to use like a bush hog as I am slowly clearing old growth brambles and vines.
Hi Jim - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. Just back from Donegal, where I used the Snapper for the first time since Sept - the carb had been drained so she fired up immediately. I made the jig because, even though I managed to press in the gear lever spring, the retaining pin had a burr on it that inhibited removal. I had to hammer it out and dress it before refitting. I left 2 comments with a query on your last video but am unsure if they appeared at your end. Kind regards.
Good timing on another of your helpful videos Jim. I will pass on a bit of advice triggered by your comment at the end re removing the stubborn grease boot. For you, this is a repeat of an email you should have in your inbox that I sent to you last night. Yesterday I found the right side grease boot on my late 80’s 28” Extra tough Hi Vac rider partially off. I was having difficulty putting it back on and had the idea of using a hair dryer on low heat. Low heat was not increasing the pliability of the boot, so still keeping good distance from the boot, I increased the heat. (In male parlance “a bigger hammer”) Instead of softening, the boot warped and shrunk up like a piece of rigid plastic. My boot is the original red boot. I noticed the one on the machine in this video is black and is possibly a different material so YMMV when you apply the heat. I’ll await the next video. The main reason I’m cautioning everyone is because this part is no longer available, at least for my machine (part #7014541YP) so I’d advise anyone with an older red boot to handle with care. Thanks again for helping the landfills remain free of Snappers. Your work is greatly appreciated my friend. Mike
@@jimjackson9381 I have tried the hot water method without success. I think the hair dryer caused too much shrinkage. I have the original red boot. I noticed before they ceased manufacturing the part that it appeared black in the photos and was possibly softer rubber?
Follow up...Fortunately I was able to source a grease boot. They are no longer available, I was lucky I found a parts place with the last one on a shelf. The new one was a different black rubber type material and the hot water trick worked fine. Advice to anyone dealing with the old red plastic boot like my original one, don’t use a heat gun as it permanently shrinks. I made a form that would allow me to heat the old one with water and place it over the form to try to expand it to have as a spare , but with no success.
I do sell a flash drive with all the videos on it just the pure interested or if you Push the like Button it should load them into your favorites give that a try. Jim
@@jimjackson9381 All I have is a crummy smartphone that is on it's way out. I'm in the process of moving. Once I get to where I am going I'm going to get a land based system. I will seriously consider at that time your flash drive.
Once again I have to commend you for your expertise and a fine video sharing your knowledge . My 42” has been maintaining 7 acres since 2004 weekly cutting from March-October . Just stopped pulling. With your help I will soon know if the clutch drive chain is the problem . Thank You ! Darryl Fricke . Southern MS.
Well before you tear it all apart if it just quit suddenly take the hubcaps off and check the bolts that go through your wheel flanges and axles if one of them break your machine Will just stop and will not move forward or backwards. Let me know what you find. Jim
@@jimjackson9381 both hub drive pins are secure, turning drive disc does turn axles. BUT am able to hold one tire while turning the other ? Would this indicate a broken chain or gear damage in the main differential case ? Have started disassembly and seems like I may have to use your technique of splitting the hub to remove it. Have tried peening it several times and am now allowing it to soak in some “Deep creep” Sea Foam penetrating oil . Will message you with progress. Thank You Jim !
@@darrylfricke2375 If you jack up your machine and put it in gear when the back tires are turning when you hold on the one and the other one starts turning that is your differential working the way it should when you turn a Sharp or tight corner the inside tire will just sit there and you will rotate around it all the drive goes to the outside tire to make you go in your circle there’s nothing wrong with your differential on your axle I still think your issue is somewhere else in your differential either a chain or a gear. Jim
@@jimjackson9381 Yes Sir ! I have mower standing up and have sealed the bottom of the hub pin hole and filled it with penetrating oil to soak overnight. Will check it later to see if it is seeping around the shaft, hopefully it will. I also noticed that mine doesn’t have a boot of any kind around the shaft , it appears that the hub extends into the fender flange , without the locking bushing and set screw. Is this a common assembly or am I not seeing something ? Does the hub itself act as a locker to prevent the axle from sliding ? Thank You for your reply !
@@darrylfricke2375 You’re going to have to send me some pictures of what you have so I know what style of machine you’re working with send them to my email jimsfixitshop@gmail.Com Thanks. Jim
Hey Jim. Thank you for your response on my first question. I’m about to try and do some more extensive service on my snapper RER. Since this is my first time servicing the diff and chain cases, do I need to tear them down in order to clean out all of the original snapper grease before topping off w/ 80w90 gear oil, or can I just fill the cases up on top of the existing grease? If I do add, would I need to run for awhile and give old thick grease a chance to liquify, then drain and top off w fresh gear oil? Thanks for all your advice!!
The best way to do it is take it apart, clean it out put it back together and to make sure you don’t have any leaks I would probably go back with the double00. Jim
Well, the best way to do it is tear them down and clean them out and inspect the gears in the chains and the bushings in the fenders you could have a lot of parts wore out that are gonna cause a lot of issues if not taken care of before they actually break and several things you have to do before you can use 80/90 gear lube. I would suggest after cleaning it and reassembling use what they call super S quality lubricant made by Smitty’s supply industry. I get it at tractor supply and it also is a double 00 lube so it won’t leak out on you. Jim
question When you go to install the Bellevile washer and O ring. Does the O ring fit down into the concave side of the Belleville washer or onto the convex side?
Well you must be talking about the differential for assembling the bolt goes through the differential cover from the bottom and looking inside of the differential cover the O-ring goes on first and the washer goes over the O- ring in a convex shape it’s like a upside down bowl then you put the gear and sprocket on you put the next washer on convexed as a bowl sitting upright and the O-ring goes down inside of the washer then when you put the fender on it’s all pinched together. Jim
Notice I can only tighten 1 bolt on the rear tire. Other 2 are very loose. Do I need to replace the Rear Wheel Hub? Can I retap it for a bigger bolt or use a new longer bolt and locking nut ?
What is the smallest briggs and stratton engine on a rear engine snapper ? IM Retired and ,I found a snapper rear engine frame with handles. (No motor) thought I would make a hillbillie mobility scooter .
