Installation of 95" 10:1 big bore kit on a 05 88" Harley Twin Cam. This is an upgrade most people can do in their garage. It's a little time consuming, but the power output makes it worth it.

Just a few things. 1 always rotate the piston pin retaining clip to ensure it’s fully seated and so the opening doesn’t line up with the indentation on the position. 2. Why didn’t you just gap the rings in the cylinders on the bench and then install the piston? It would of been much easier. 3. Cometic gaskets come with updated torque specs for the head bolts. They no longer use the 90° turn method. Other then that it was a pretty solid video.
@KnobleMoto
@KnobleMoto 3 года назад
Well since you asked: 1. If I could rotate the clip once it’s inside, that would mean it does not have any spring tension, and I would use a new wrist pin clip. 2. Because the light coming in my window generated a glare on the freshly machined cylinder that created a glare on the camera. So in effort of making things easier to see for the viewer, I did it on the bike so I could diffuse the lighting. 3. Cometic does have updated torque specs and they make a great product and I highly trust their engineering department. However if I give a spec that is different than the service manual, a bunch of self appointed video critics will get type-ee, and start lecturing about how I should not deviate from the service manual.
@bigrednick100
@bigrednick100 3 года назад
@@KnobleMoto I agree with all of that except the first point but to each their own. And you’re definitely right about people jumping on the manual bandwagon. The worst part is 90% have never actually turned a wrench and let’s say 8% of the remaining 10% have never done it professionally.

After the big bore kit do you feel a big power difference on the highway like top speed? Does it make having a 5 speed not so bad?
@KnobleMoto
@KnobleMoto Год назад
Overall, yes. However I did the 510 cam first, and that alone made it pull much harder on the highway. Upped the top speed to about 118 from 105. I also dropped the commentator sprocket from at 25 to a 24. That helped it push the wind. The big bore kit turned everything up a few notches. Regarding the 5 speed: Twin Cams are like metric(Jap) bikes. Just twist the grip more and spin the snot out of it. The engine loves it. WITH the lower gear ratio, I would spin mine at 80+ all day long.

I switched to gear cams before I had a RU-vid channel. It is a fairly easy job. If you can do a big bore, you can do cams and vice-versa. You will need a few more special tools for cams. As a matter of fact their instructions are pretty adamant about doing it their way. Many hi-po shops recommend it also. That said, the original way, with 90deg turn should be very close. The issue is, with that method is a different gasket make up and it is with new studs, so the stretch is known and will be the same, with used studs, it could be off a bit at each one, and the compression of the gasket material, hence the known value for the last step. @@MrHootenholler no. I wouldn’t bother with that unless you are pulling the crank. Even then, unless you are going for a stroker or 120+hp, I don’t think it is necessary.

Kinda hard for me to see through mirror view like this

Thanks for you input. I figured my inexperience in editing was why I got snubbed for that Emmy for "excellence in RU-vid video production". If only I would have known about the "millions" I was going to make sharing video on youtube, I would have hired a production crew for sharing knowledge to the DIY crowd.

Why is the video mirrored?
@KnobleMoto

Because I used the selfie camera on my phone and I wasn’t experienced enough with video editing to know how to fix it.

Well I wanted to like this video but 2:00 in and the exhaust is suddenly on the left side of the Harley, did Harley-Davidson and Triumph become butt budies or did Harley-Davidson decide to do a whole flip flop? Skipping this video, sorry, details matter!

Yeah I heard that was why I didn't receive a nomination for an Academy Award in Best Cinematography In A RU-vid Video. Maybe next year...

Is this a Russian Harley ? At time 12:29 better to push the ring down the cylinder somewhat with the piston, keeping it square. Not measuring the ring at the top. Also , at time 16:26 not so good to scratch the top of the piston with the ring . Wow! As I watch this video I see more things not looking good . I see no oil on the piston or rings , and most jobs put the piston on the rod first , GGG. I think you installed the piston that way cause of the type of ring compressor you had. Again, at time 28: 04 you torqued the head /cylinder down the wrong way.... Not to be torqued cross way, should have been torqued lowest bolt one one side first then highest bolt on same side , moving to other side lowest then highest.

A small scratch on the top of the piston doesn't matter because that is not a contact surface. Everything was oiled that needed to be. I hope I didn't forget to mention any oiling steps in the video. Yes you lube all metal to metal surfaces with a heavy oil or assembly lube. I am not a pro cameraman or tv star, so a lot of this was done in multiple takes. The ring compressor came off at least 5 times (should have bought a better one). Anyways, the motor has 3k on it since this build and it runs strong. Thanks for you input. Tag me in your motor assembly video so I can see how you do it.

@@KnobleMoto .... In the video you didn't put one drop of oil on the ring. Also, while you were sliding the rings on the piston you scratched the side of the piston not the top of the piston, we all know scratching the top isn't a concern. Also, checking the rings at the top of the cylinder isn't correct . The ring should be down the bore an inch or so not at the top. Thank you for your video it is somewhat helpful to people but buy some tools to do the job correctly, like an ring compressor tool and a ring expander tool. It's great you are doing your own work and saving money !

Harley davidson is the yugos of the motorcycle industry...only lesbians and men who have inferiority issues buy harley-davidson

Welp. I don't think very many men with inferiority complexes bought Yugos. Also I know some pretty cool lesbians. So if riding a Harley clumps me in with them, I am okay with that. They are probably more fun to party with anyways. Now regarding your critique of Harley's; part of the appeal of a Harley, is the bike has soul and character, unlike you.

Everyone talks shit on Harley until they ride one that suits their interests. I hated the first two sportsters I rode, but my buddy let me ride his lowered EVO night train around the block I fell in love and bought a fxdls not long after. I’ve owned and rode numerous bikes and like most of them for what they are, but Harley’s have a loyal following for a reason.

@@jamieschinkai1267 Agreed. I had many other bikes too. When I rented a Road Glide, I finally realized I had been wrong about the Harley for all these years.
