This is the beginning of your ECM going bad. All the temporary fixes that are done work, well temporarily. There's a video on RU-vid about the 5 volt test to certain sensors that is done on one of these 4.0 96 grand Cherokee. I perform the same test on my 96 grand Cherokee with the 4.0 and fortunately I was able to resolve my problem. I had all the same issues and symptoms that are talked about here and other videos. I don't usually recommend companies because when it back fires, people tend to want to blame the one that recommended a certain product or service. Fortunately for me I did some research and ordered my ECM from a company named (FS1) Flag Ship 1and it took about 4 weeks because these ECMs are built specifically by VIN to your vehicle. As soon as my ECM arrived, I swapped it out and I have not had any problems since. It's now been a year and my96 grand Cherokee is still running strong. But I have to say this again. It all started with troubleshooting the problem.
I know exactly what you're going through I had the same issue on my 98 Grand Cherokee I replace the PCM in January of this year ever since that no problems
My 98 did it untill the paper work was filled out properly. My 2004 is doing it now,After jiggling the PCM plugs it has not stalled in todays, including today ,Aug 17 2024.My mechanic checked, said it was not my PCM.He wants to change the cam positioner sensor.A friend said not so fast, change the transmission fluid.Mine has never stalled while accelerating.Always while braking, idling or slowing down to turn.
hi, I just have one question, normally after your Jeep been shut off, are you able to turn on it and drive again. I saw one 2004 Jeep Grand cherokee L6 4.0, the Jeep start ok and drive okay, but normally after 15-20 minutes drive, it get shut off and not able to start again. it need to wait for say 2-3 hours and again it start and able to drive another 15-20 minutes. i want to check whether you have similar issue or not. thank you,
I wasnt confortable with the issue so i took the computer to get rebuild to have a peace of mind. They're charging me 460 to rebuild the pcu. Not everyone rebuild these now a days was very hard to find a local place here in L.A. Still waiting on getting it back...
My problem is not the computer because I replaced it and the problem is still there. I replaced what seems to me like half of everything under the hood and the problem is still there. What the hell is this a f-ing quantum bubble just floating around in my engine?
Make sure you got a quality computer. There have been cases when pcms have been bad out the box. Finding a quality rebuilt one is difficult. There are 2 styles, the thick style pcm and the slim style Motorola. Both are the same. The thick one has header board failures/ cracked solder joints. The slim pcm Is better.
I just bought an 04 and it shuts off after driving for 10 mins omw home.absolutely nothing works.I.let it sit on the side of the road overnight imma bout to go see if it will start again....any suggestions???? Thanks!!!!
When you turn it on tap the pcm with a screwdriver firmly and see if it shuts down or tap the wires to the pcm If it shuts down...if it does your pcm needs rebuild.
My suggestion to you is wiggle the third connector around while you got somebody in the car trying to start it it it does it a lot of times it will start or at least in my case it did I had a 98 Grand Cherokee did the same thing
