If it's the 4.0 then that's a different story, considering there was in fact a grand Cherokee 4.0 model. There wasn't much footage of the bay though unfortunately...

I have a 98 grand Cherokee and have been stalling when I'm coming to a stop. A friend showed me this video and I took it to another friend who is a master mechanic he ran the diagnostics and all was well so I showed him this video and we shortened the screws now it works like a charm. It really does work! Thanks for posting this.

My brother started having a cut off problem but thought it was the coil so he replaced but it wasn't, it was still shutting off. We checked youtube for a problem and everything pointed towards the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor so we changed it, but nope. So we checked out your simple fix without the soldering, just shortened up the (2) T-15 bolts holding the inside board to the outside and wallah. Was getting a code but it even fixed it (0) codes now. Thanks.

That will work for a couple years. Watch the other videos on DIY PCM fixes. you need to solder the connections on the inside cover of the harness plug plate. Factory job is shit. Did it myself. Works great now. Saved $350. Look it up.

Reminds me of the hell I went through 12 years ago. Jeep Grand Cherokee, 1996, stalling. Did some research and found out that it's the computer. Took it to the Jeep/Chrysler Dealer. Yes, DEALER! The new computer that had to be programmed for that particular Jeep (bull shit) cost me $700. New computer in, and the dealer mechanic shows me the three plugs on the computer. As he pressed them down, the engine stalled. Looks like the plugs are bad. Can't buy plugs anywhere. So I did more research and found out that a guy cut off his three plugs and soldered every wire to the computer. So, I did that. Took me three days in my basement to solder every single wire to the correct pin on the pcm. I bought every female and male connector pin from Radio Shack and a bunch of shrink tubing. I had to tell the guy what I was doing. He kept asking me, probably thinking I'm building a frikin bomb or something. So, I put the pcm back in the Jeep with the new soldered wires, connected the soldered wires to the cut off wires on the Jeep, (took me a few hours) and it still started stalling. I was about to flip. Found out that the new computers are crap. You bend them or press them and the engine will stall. So I unsoldered every friking wire and reconstructed all three plugs back like they originally were. Ordered a used Jeep pcm from a junkyard. The pcm was old but looked different. Looked solid, not a tin can like the one I just bought brand new. Without programming it, I put it in and it's still working today. 12 years baby and I refuse to get rid of that old Jeep. Running like a tank. The End. :)

Hey will the pcm make your car stall & make your battery drain?
@plsniper
@plsniper 4 года назад
@@chuckybandzz4273 Who knows man, pcm is pcm. But I have learned since then how important it is to keep your ground wires and connections clean. Especially on Jeeps. Check those first. I took the plastic off a battery negative cable about an inch and the copper wire was green. If that's the case, change the cables, clean the ground connectors. There's a few of them. As far as battery draining, I found a way to check that here on youtube. The guy turned off his jeep, took the keys out. Took a volt meter and started taking out the fuses one by one and checking the voltage for each. If it says zero, put the fuse back in and go on to the next one. If you find a voltage, check what is that fuse for. You found the problem of what's draining your battery. I'm no mechanic but hope this helps. Good luck man.

Maybe you can help me out. I have a 99 XJ 4.0. Last week it started stalling out on my way home from work. For a year of so now, my downstream O2 sensor is bad. So I wanted to take it to autozone to use the OBD2 and see what codes it has. On the way there it stalled out many times. So the check engine light went off. When i got to Autozone it pulled a P1694 code for the PCM. They told me that the cat could be clogged and to check that out. So when i was waiting for my appointment at mineke i did some looking online and some sites said that the CPS could be bad and sometimes throws a code for the pcm. I get to minike, they tell me no way the cat ia clogged, and to check my ground wires. So this morning i took the cables off the batter and cleaned them up. The jeep barely made it around the block. When i took my girls car to autozone to try n get more info, they told me to check the fuel pump relay and the air sensor on the intake. Does anyone have a suggestion on what this can be?

Azael Sepulveda wow that's amazing just for my own edification. Were the bolts causing it to short or ground out, because they were too long and were touching against the firewall? Or the pcm was not a tight fit because of the length? I know why ask why if it works, but it will help me better understand the inner workings of my jeep. Thanks your wonderful for sharing this info. Also I lost the panel to my interior fuse box. And I have 98 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo limited straight 6 and I can't find a schematic on what fuse is where lol. I have a pretty good idea but that won't help me not make a mistake do you know where I can get one?

its just the bolts are causing strain on the mother board. its good that you want to know. as of the schematics i would just google it or just see if you can do to an oreillys or autozone and see if they let you read one of the repair books

Good Video. Thanks for posting it. I have done this, ran the gauntlet by changing everything out even the screws....Tried to open the OEM ECU and found cold solders everywhere. Ended up getting one from Autozone 2 years ago and it has worked fairly well. I am now back to stalling, having issues @ 50mph ect. There have been electrical gremlins all over this beast. I am determined to find and kill all of them. Love the Jeep...just not the grey hair it gives me. " Its a jeep thing!"

same thing happened to my jeep 2 years ago. it ended up being the crankshaft sensor. but it happend again this week but this time it was different because my jeep would not last running for more then a minute before it shut off. then i would try to turn it on after that and it would not turn on until i waited an hour for it to cool off. what i did was unplugged my battery and disconnected the ecu connections and cleaned the contacts with electrical spray cleaner. i also unplugged the extension connection for the crankshaft sensor thats on the back of the engine by the firewall and cleaned that also. i also went into the fuse box thats by the engine and switched the asd relay with a different one. it turned on and stayed on. im on day two and it has not turned off on me. hope this works for who ever needs it. That’s really weird cuz my Jeep idles fine for the first minute and then all of a sudden starts shaking and sounds like it’s gonna die out. I opened up the fuse box and noticed the ASD and fuel pump relay are clicking really loud . It eventually dies but I can start it back up no problem and it will do the same thing . So you’re saying your fix was cleaning the pcm connections ?

I just removed my PCM and it does not have the screws shown in your video. So I guess I’ll move on to the next potential fix. Will have to look at crank sensor and throttle position sensor and related wiring

The problem is cold solder joints in the PCM. The reason the screw change works for a while because it pulls the connection. I tried the clamps, zip ties, you name it. So called reconditioned PCMs usually have the same problem. I pulled mine, took the cover off cut the potting material all the way around then heated the back with a propane torch till the board would come out. Spent a couple hours cleaning the potting material off a strip about 2 inches or so across the middle of the board. This is where the pins are soldered in. Near the back of the third plug I found three bad solder joints. Resoldered them, laid a thick coat of clear silicone and reset it back in the case. It was cutting off at least 3 times a day, it's been a week now and not even a single skip.

I did the same thing for my abs 'brain' in my 2000 gmc Sierra. Reflowed all the pin joints and no more codes. Think I'll give it a go on the pcm in my wifes gc. Simple just time consuming.

Cool video! Helpful! But I tried this years ago and it never worked, no matter what I did. I replaced the ecm twice from an outfit in Florida. Didn't work either. I spent weeks troubleshooting my electrical issue. Turns out that the ecm's were a bad design, and Chrysler knew it. So it was redesigned for 1999 using an all aluminum, solid body with a single circuit board (instead of 2 separate boards as yours has). So I ordered one through Autozone. It's meant for a 1999 and up. They programmed it to work with older models, and mine has been running flawlessly for about 3 years! If you are having stalling issues, it is more than likely the horribly designed ecm for the older models! But you're right, wiggle that third connector, sometimes really hard. And if it begins to stall, stutter, or it dies, the ecm has bit the dust. Replace it with a newer model ecm programmed to work with your year! It will save you the frustration and headaches. Don't believe me? Come check out my meticulous engine rebuild and troubleshooting of this notorious Jeep problem. Best of luck to you all!

I have a 1993 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo V8. As long as I keep my foot on the gas it will stay running. Soon as I take my foot off the gas it turns off. Any idea what the problem could be? My search on youtube has lead me to believe it is my PCM. Would hate to replace that and the problem could be something simple or something else.

Hi all, A big THANKS to you all for posting your videos on RU-vid or your comments on the countless forums to help people out with their problems. I'm posting this to possibly help others out there that may need it, because I found that everyone had slightly different issues around the stalling problem. Mine was different also. I have a 1996 Jeep Cherokee that had a stalling issue. It's fixed now, but I'll let you briefly know what happened. My Jeep was fine when it was a cold or cool temperature but would always stall when it got to a normal heated operational temperature and stopped at lights or backed up traffic at idle. It wouldn't start for at least another 30 minutes until it had cooled enough. I then realised it was always in D-drive when it stalled, so I tried flicking it to neutral every time I was stopped and it wouldn't stall until I got to my destination and tried to start it straight away. Again i would have to wait for it to cool and then it would start. After stalling I checked the diagnosis codes by turning the ignition to the 2nd position 6 times and waiting for the codes to flash. That told me to replace the coolant temperature sensor, the crankshaft positon sensor, take it to a mechanic for diagnosis and the completed diagnosis code 55. I disconnected the ground battery terminal from battery and started with the cheapest of options which was the coolant temperature sensor. After replacing the coolant temperature sensor and connecting the battery, I then checked the stalling issue by driving around for an hour and leaving it in drive and it stalled and wouldn't start for 30 minutes. I then decided on the crankshaft option so I disconnected the ground battery terminal, changed the crankshaft position sensor and tested it also by driving around for an hour and leaving it in drive and it didn't stall. Problem fixed. I then checked the diagnosis codes again and no codes came up, besides the code for less than 50 key starts since the battery was last disconnected and the completed diagnosis code 55. Regards Kurtis

Papa John with that it would be hard to diagnose without hooking up a scan tool to look at the data pids. only thing i can think up off hand is the density of the the air being more dense in the cooler weather. might be effecting a sensor. but thats a shot in the dark.

In my case (and probably many others) 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport (XJ, not Grand Cherokee) 4L 6cy auto, the computer is sandwiched like a taco. One piece of aluminum wraps around the computer components. It does not have plates like that. The only way you can open it is to bend it open. I bent mine open, checked all the solder points, bent it back with a vice, sealed it with gasket maker, cleaned the contacts with contact cleaner but it still shuts off randomly, even while driving like 50mph. Next I will change out the Crankshaft position sensor. So for any that have this type of computer, try changing the CPS first, rather than bending open the computer for no reason.

Doubt that is our problem on our 1998 Jeep Cherokee..this is a 'keep on going' vehicle, never breaks down or has mechanical issues until now. It has been lately just loosing power as though it is stalling, but then when we take our foot off the gas it recovers. Yet today it finally stalled...we pulled over and it did start back up...so we do not think it is a fule pump issue..how about fuel injectors or fuel filter? Mayb water in the gas...probably not as one time it stalled when it had 1/4 tank, then we filled it to past a half tank and it stalled again...any thoughts out there?

Change fuel pump or first by pass white ceramic block on left front fender. Resistor spring wire rust. Goes to fuel pump. A 1 ohm resistor. Used to quite down fuel pump with 10 volts. Not in books or diagrams. Clay on back of block cracks and lets water get to spring. Can just hook the 2 wires together for 12 volts.

Hey Oz, Could this issue exist with a 2014 Jeep, or is it something chrys corrected? I have a 14' Cherokee Sport and have been stalking out at odd times. It started stalling shortly after starting the engine- usually a mile down the road after I came to a stop. I noticed that if I left before the violent was over 150 degrees, it would stall in that timeframe. Assumed I needed the coolest drained or topped off. The past few drives, it has stalled each time I came to a complete stop. Power is fine it seems, and I don't have the issue when it's running at full (highway/above 30mph).. Usually takes a few tries at starting- like nothing kicks except power- then I give it some time, it will struggle but get started and run "normal ".. Seems to be occurring almost every drive now.Any ideas? Could this be related?

i have a 99 jeep cherokee. same problem, intermittently shuts off, runs rough, a couple times just shuts down and wont start. everyone with this problem should jump the ignition switch red and blue wire. put a switch between the jump so you can turn it off and on. drive the car with the switch on and see if this takes care of your problem. if it does then its your ignition switch, not the key tumbler, but the switch box that the wire connector plugs into. about a $40 part. i went through a lot cleaning grounds, new coil, cap, and wires, checking wire looms and it ended up being the ignition switch. my problem was intermittent so i put the jumper switch on and drove for a few weeks without a problem before i spent the $ for the switch. hope this helps someone

Great video, thanks! However, as a mechanic/technician, don’t you want to fix the root cause? Why does shortening the screws “fix” the problem. Actually, it only fixed the symptom. I understand the problem may be cold solder connections from the jacks to the terminal board of the ecu. I’m taking my 98 GC ecu apart today to see why shortening the screws alleviates the symptoms. I’ll also resolver all of the terminal jack connections.

Hector Garcia-Martinez I'd make sure the butterfly valve fully opens when the engine gets hot. Maybe when the engine heats up as he hits the freeway the valve fails and closes, choking the engine. Just a guess. If it was choking at low speeds I could help you a lot more :/

Andrew Roby parton my ignorance, but what is the butterfly valve?
@ybor363
@ybor363 9 лет назад
Follow your air intake to where it mounts onto the throttle body. Disconnect that. There will be a round valve that opens and closes depending on how much you push the pedal and how hot the engine is. If the valve isn't opening or if it fails and closes the engine won't get enough air and it will stall.

Stop, don't buy the PCM or computer for your Jeep. I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I could be doing 70 miles an hour down the highway or sitting at a red light and it would just die. When it would die while I was driving I could put it into neutral gear and it would start immediately and I could go on about my Merry way basically thinking what the hell just happened. This went on sporadically for a couple weeks until the Jeep would not start immediately while driving. I would have to pull off the side of the road and wait a few minutes or even a few hours before it would finally decide do not hold me hostage any longer and would start up as if nothing ever happened. It went from doing this once in a week three times in a day. I replaced a couple of sensors while watching videos. It wasn't until I replaced the crankshaft sensor and soon as I did it was like a miracle everything started working as normal. I'm 2 months into this fix and it has not stalled at any time not once. I'm just saying this because I crankshaft position sensor $65, it's going to be a lot cheaper than replaces that computer. I bet you. Took me about 30 minutes to put it on myself it's really easy to find. On the Cherokee Sport it is on the driver's side of where the transmission bolts to the engine. Mildly difficult to get to but you can do it if you're I do it yourselfer and it solved my problems without buying the computer. Not saying that yours is not a computer problem. Come to find out there's several different components that can cause this stalling problem and I couldn't wrap my head around starting with a computer first. Perhaps I got lucky and didn't have to buy a buttload of sensors to finally buy a computer and it got fixed. With several components that can cause this it is a roll of the dice I'll give you that. At least I rolled the dice it didn't come up with Snake Eyes lucky me I guess LOL

my 99 jeep tends to shut down, after it gets hot...and then I can wiggle the middle harness, and get the car to start up again, rather than just wait for it to cool back down... I am thinking that the heat is causing a soder point to expand, and by wiggling it, I am able to gain continuity again, so.....this decreased pressure on the circuit board, is going to reduce the heated expansion, that is causing the shut down...I am going to try this fix...back out the screws, then warm up the jeep, and see if I can no longer get that wiggled harness to shut down the engine. Next step would be to have the board resoddered and inspected for continuity?
@OzMechanics

If loosening the screws doesn't work, I would highly recommend you buying a refurbished unit i.e eBay, Amazon or even better buying a new pcm and getting it reflashed.
@YouSoundButtHurt
@YouSoundButtHurt 8 лет назад
That's not how solder works. Solder has a reflow temp and I doubt it's getting hot enough to flow. You can have a cracked solder joint which is why you can get a connection if you wiggle it or the pcb itself is damaged in some way.
