It is an amazing car and a great video. It still amazes me that people had and still have the means to buy a car new and save it or have the foresight to know that one day a vehicle will be valuable regardless of make or model. ( the ones that they think will be). When the Mustang performance started picking up steam in 1982 after years in the malaise era people were glad to see some performance back and drove the wheels off these cars. Myself included. When the aero cars with its fuel injection came out, it was like voodoo to people who were familiar with a carburetor. It seemed so complicated then , looking back after seeing how far we’ve come they were actually pretty basic. This car is an amazing example of a car from a definite bygone era. Light, simple and fast. Please preserve it the best you can for yourself and all others to enjoy.

Loved the tour of the '92 Coupe. My '92 coupe was built on 7/28/92 according to Kevin Marti. Interestingly the power steering rack is coded as a '93 rack according to my Ford mechanic, and it had 1993 dated spark plug wires (wish I still had them). I have owned it since March of '93, bought it with 4,800 miles on it. Wish it still looked like this blue one!

From 1991-1993 the Mustang GT came with the ZR Goodyear "gatorback" tires while the LX came with the Michelin tires. I have seen the dealer swap them at the buyers request, but that probably didn't happen too often. A friend of mine bought a new 1992 LX coupe 5.0 and had the dealer swap the wheels/gatorback tires off a GT that was on the lot because he thought the Michelins were ugly.

In 1993 I bought a Bimini blue 92 notch with 10K miles on it. 5.0, 5 speed, 3.08 gear. Had A/C but no cruise and a very basic AM/FM radio. I know it had power locks because an actuator was replaced under warranty but can’t remember about the windows; think they were power but my 88 GT vert was manual and that’s all been a long time ago so memory is a little hazy. Thinking power windows & locks may have been a package. Did the timing bump, air intake silencer removal, K&N filter and under drive pulleys, other than that bone stock. Loved that car, was just gorgeous. Great find on this one, thanks for sharing!

I believe that the coating is referred to as lower road side abrasion protection on a Marti report. Most Canadian cars have this, rear defrost, block heater, metric speedometer ect.
@GearHead704
@GearHead704 2 года назад
Cool thanks for extra info.
@foxchassis
@foxchassis 2 года назад
Yes, that was the 'lower bodyside protection' option. It was applied to the lower part of the body, below the bodyside molding, between the front and rear wheels. There was no factory undercoating option.
@vinceandricciola780
@vinceandricciola780 2 года назад
The lower body guard protection was called Duraguard by Ford. If you haven’t seen it in the states, then it was for the Canadian market. If memory serves me correct this was applied to I believe all Ford passenger cars from 1978 onwards . My dads new 1979 Granada had it , his 1983 Marquis had it my Lx has it. It wasn’t Mustang specific and certainly wouldn’t of been rare here in Canada.
@foxchassis
@foxchassis 2 года назад
DuraGuard was more than the textured coating on the lower bodyside. DuraGuard was anti-corrosion on a lot of places on the car. The textured paint on the lower bodyside was a separate option in the states, and included with DuraGuard on Canadian car.

I still have my 91 Bimini notch that I bought brand new with a very similar option package, but upgraded radio with EQ. Canadian car also. I actually had choice between a Calypso, the Bimini, and a white notch on the lot that were clearing out half way through 92 as the 93 models were coming. In the 30 years that I've had the car, I've only seen 1 other 91 Bimini notch in person with the black moldings. Seen 3 actual Biminis, but they were either 92's, or as was common, people would paint their moldings to make the car look newer. Just a lucky purchase. And it's still in great shape, but modified. No regrets. Oddly, my alternator didn't have the GT stamped on it as I just replaced the original one and it was still working fine, I just wanted to upgrade. Thanks for a great video.

There is a lot of little nuances with Canadian fox platform mustangs like my aunts 89 that she ordered brand new, that came with deluxe, black interior, airbag steering wheel and 10 holes on a four-cylinder five speed LX (she almost got the 5 L if she had I bet she would’ve kept the car and still had it to this day ) notchback some Canadian 89 mustangs (if you ordered them from mid year on, they came as an 89 model but ) got the 90 airbag wheel because of the rules here I really wish I still had that car The half dozen or so fox platform cars that I let go over the years. I am really really killing myself over it now that deep maroon red that might’ve only been a four-cylinder but it would’ve been a great car to build. I have found a few crazy, rare, low mile foxes up here recently during my hunt for my daughters first car

What was optional on 1979-1986 cars is 100% irrelevant when discussing a 1992 LX 5.0.

I would like to point out that there is one thing that is missing that should have been on the car from the Ford factory/dealer. On the front of the upper intake towards the right side you will see a circle. That circle is actually supposed to have a rubber grommet that sits on the intake. Personally I think this grommet is ugliest thing I have ever seen. I am glad that it is not the there. I am in no way criticizing the car it is gorgeous. I just wanted to do a little fun fact. Anyway, great video Matt. I have a 93 notchback myself. Mint condition however it supercharged with a 347 Stroker. No I'm not going to sell it just in case anyone was wondering. I would sell my fiance before that car ever leaves me. I personally don't really like the strictly original everything cars. The fun with these cars is doing upgrades with how well they respond to them. I think I've rambled enough have a good night everybody

You’re talking about that sort of rectangular black plastic piece that covers the core plug on the front of the intake, right? I never liked the looks of that either, always wanted to pull one off to see what held it on but never did. Adhesive? Anyway I am not an expert and my memory isn’t what it used to be, but having read every copy of SuperFord and Mustang Monthly magazines the day I received them back in the 80’s & 90’s, I have a vague memory that maybe Ford discontinued that somewhere during the EFI Fox body run. Possible? Or am I just so used to seeing cars now without them that it looks normal?

If anyone has an original battery it wouldn't be much good now! Our Canadian cars came with that pebble guard texture. Another Canadian controversial topic/debate is that our Canadian GT mustangs came with a "COBRA" sticker from factory on the left side of the hatchback even thought it's a GT.
@foxchassis
@foxchassis 2 года назад
Ford called all 1984-92 Mustang GTs ordered/sold in Canada as "Cobra GT". 1986 Canadian GTs even have "GTC" (GT Cobra) on the buck tag. Cobra sticker was on the left only for 1986-91, as there was a CHMSL in the center. The sticker was in the center in 1985. There was no Cobra sticker in 1984 or 1992.

You say the LX was not popular. Partially true. GT's were considered more desirable to most. But the LX 5.0 were actually in high demand relative to the numbers produced. I had a hard time in 88 finding an LX 5.0 without a dealer mark up. I got the LX because it was closer to a sleeper, less gaudy and quicker and better handling due to 100+ pound weight savings without the GT body cladding.
@GearHead704
@GearHead704 2 года назад
You make some good points. A lot of people didn't realize it, but some like yourselves knew the weight difference was the key to speed.
@jked7463
@jked7463 2 года назад
@@GearHead704 I had a friend with an 87 gt. We swapped cars. The difference in weight was evident. But what was truly surprising was the handling. The LX was much more responsive, better turn in and wallowed alot less in the corners. One other thing. I waited til 88 for mine because they adjusted the pedals for double clutch/ toe and heel shifting. That made the car much more fun to drive. As you can tell, I am not as much about 0-60 as I am about corners. To me power is there to get you through and out of the corners.
@jked7463
@jked7463 2 года назад
By the way great video. Mine was a hatch which worked for me then. But that big hole in the back made the chassis flexible, especially as the soft steel fatigued. So this notchback is very appealing. Especially true as the stiffer chassis makes for better cornering. The big problem with this car is the milage. I wouldn't be able to keep it off the road so I would destroy it's value.

I have seen a lot of comments about the lower door protection. It was coined “Duraguard “ by Ford in I believe 1977 and then used in this portion of the car in 1978. It was standard on all passenger cars in Canada from that date onwards. My cousins tnew 79 mustang and my dads 79 Granada had it. Ford had placed a decal on the side window promoting it. Just FYI. It wasn’t rare or special, just a Canadian thing. As far as the roll up windows, lack of options or a/c again being from Canada this was pretty much a common sight in the day until a/c and other options became standard. It certainly wasn’t rare For those living in the states who have never seen Canadian cars the coating or roll up windows lack of options would obviously seem foreign to you 😊 My brother worked as a mechanic at a Mercury/Lincoln dealership and did the PDI or pre delivery inspection on probably thousands of Ford of Canada cars new and including the Mercury Capri ( sister car to the mustang of this era) . I also worked at the same dealership in 1988. Mat great job on the video pointing out and explaining to others alit things in foxbody cars who are unfamiliar or simply to young to know.
@vinceandricciola780
@vinceandricciola780 2 года назад
I should clarify the lack of options in base model cars and certainly the LX was just that.
@foxchassis
@foxchassis 2 года назад
Duraguard was much more than just the textured coating on the lower bodyside. From the 1992 Mustang showroom brochure, for Ford of Canada: Each passenger car is protected with the corrosion protection DuraGuard system. This system is built in at the factory to provide the following corrosion protection: - Precoated steel on doors, quarter panels, hoods, and other selected areas - Galvanized steel on rocker panels, selected cowl tops, and underbody parts - Vinyl sealer on underside of rear wheelhouses - Super cleaning process followed by phosphate coating on the entire car body - Electrocoat process to apply corrosion resistant primer paint on entire body - Aluiminized wax sprayed into hard to places and door surfaces - Protective vinyl or urethane coating behind wheel openings and along lower bodyside area I can find the same processes in all 1982 through 1993 Ford of Canada Mustang brochures, although worded a little differently in some years. Before 1985 the textured coating on the lower bodyside was shown as a separate option and it was called "lower bodyside protection". MSRP was ~$40 in 1984. Some Mustangs in the states had this option. It was indicated on Mustang buck tags, in all years, by the code "RA", and spelled out as "ROAD ABRASION" on a second buck tag. The 1982 through 1985 Mustang brochures for Ford of Canada says this about the last of the 7 processes listed above: - protective vinyl coating on the lower bodyside for resistance to stone chipping and road abrasion
@vinceandricciola780
@vinceandricciola780 2 года назад
Salmon, yes my apologies I should of clarified that it was part of the Duragard system that I believe Ford of Canada started in 1977, and the lower body side protection the following year 1978. Most people that I know and knew (body shop people included) just referred to this as duraguard. Whether or not they knew it was part of a system or an entire process . As far as American cars thanks for the clarification as I didn’t know that. For Canadian cars yes it was a cost option but am almost certain it was on every passenger car made from Ford of Canada ( mercury’s included) So this option would not be uncommon or rare for Canada or for a fox body. The same would apply to a block heater for example. It’s listed as a cost option but the majority of vehicles just come with them. The dealer would order them that way. It happens still to this day. If you live in certain parts of Canada, yes a block heater is an option, but I will bet the dealer ordered it for your car , regardless of the model mustang or otherwise and you would have one . Whether is installed or sitting loose in the trunk . Again thanks for both Matt’s for the video.

That car was there to get people into the show room. Depending on the car and options, it would either be sold immediately or not for a long.
