Had a 99 vette towed in with a complaint of intermittent no start and a few other electrical issues. I noticed that with the no start that the Verus would not communicate with any of the modules. When I back probed pin 2 of the dlc I found a teady 9 volts. communications with the Verus came back when I disconnected the drivers seat module from the class two serial junction.
I usually don't get into theory much in my videos, just individual problems and diagnostic techniques. If you want to learn more on theory I recommend Scanner Danners channel / scannerdanner He is a real educator and goes into more detail

Nice find drgreasybob. I had a similar one today except i found 7 volts on pins 4 & 5, which is the ground circuits, ended up being a loose body ground, just tightened it up snug and class 2 serial data was back online, funny how a bad ground can ruin someones day... Either way keep up the good work you are a true diagnostician.

The circuit I was testing was the class 2 serial data wire. This allows the modules to communicate with eachother and serves as the diagnostic link. Because this vehicle has antitheft it is necessary for the body control module to communicate with the engine control module. If shorted to ground or voltage no communication can take place and a nostart occurs.

so how do I go about testing WHICH of these components is the culprit? obviously I believe I eliminated BCM & PCM. I have also disconnected different switches in the fuse#24 circuit... radio, heater controls, blowers switches, headlight, ign switch. I have left some critical info out..let me start from beginning...customer complained of no start & thought it was due to alarm...after recharging battery, car started...though key off&out, battery light stayed on in cluster...cont'ing...

I'm having similar issues on an 04 envoy XL 4.2ltr....no problems with starting unless battery is drained, so in my case I have a draw within the system. I have pinpointed to fuse #24 underhood fuse box which is ICP/DIC. I have unplugged BCM&PCM to avoid damage while testing and parasitic draw test to battery still shows draw anyway. Test light goes out if I disconnect IPC but I know that the class 2 serial data wire runs through other components. OnStar, PCM, BCM, etc....cont'ing on reply

....intermittently speakers would pop,(I believe it was chime) this is similar to your description above. So I have eliminated many components but still need to pinpoint THE culprit. Any help you could provide would be so GREATLY appreciated!

clean the grounds and inspect the BCM with a magnifying glass and remove any and all corrosion with a toothbrush or some other soft yet abrasive item
