For me the negative mental health implications from being bald are far worse than the potential mental health implications of finasteride. I’ve been bald once at 22yo where it nearly took me to suicide because of the self-loathing (compounded by other childhood issues), got my hair somewhat back through HT + Fin and I never want to be back to where I was mentally when I was bald.

I’ve been on finasteride for the last two years and have often thought about doing something similar, but it’s always so hard to quantify. I go through depressive episodes sometimes, but I did that before I took finasteride as well. I have focus issues, but I used to take adderal because I’ve always had a tough time focusing. My motivation for sex goes down sometimes, but I remember ordering a testosterone test a few years ago because my sexual desires were low. The point is, a lot of the above happened before I ever took finasteride. At that time I had to assess my diet, relationships, career, sleeping habits, etc and work on fixing it, which things eventually got better. I’m not saying those things can’t be effected by finasteride, I just think it’s easy to place all the blame on finasteride instead of assessing lifestyle choices first. Anyways, great video. I hope you’re feeling better!

Motivation and mood are incredibly contextual and vary throughout your life. Matt knew he was going to stop finasteride so in the back of his mind he had some idea that finasteride has an effect on mood and motivation. That's what he read on the internet. So it is no surprise that a week later he felt more motivated, which you cannot join any conclusions on anyway. There's no physiological or pharmacologic basis for improved mood a week after stopping a drug that stays in your system 4 months.

Hi Matt. Thanks very much for your video. Interesting to hear your experience. I have had problems with fin, both oral and topical. I am considering trying low frequency topical dutasteride. 0.5-1mg every week or every other week. I'm really interested in this approach where you can theoretically knock out a significant amount of scalp DHT with minimal systemic spill over. The scalp 5AR enzyme half life is quite long at 30 days or so. So theoretically this should work. Like how dut mesotherapy uses low doses down to 0.1mg and infrequently (sometimes monthly or less) yet gets results. Are you still using topical dut? Also...May I enquire which topical antiandrogen you are using that you mentioned? Thanks...love your channel. Keep up the good work. 👍

Lower back pain can be referred from the prostate. As finasteride is used for prostate hypertrophy there may be a relationship here. In principle finasteride could mask prostate issues that would be detected using blood tests for PSA levels so imaging of the prostate to assess for issues might not be a bad idea. If the finasteride seems to be causing lower back pain and this is reflecting an impact on the prostate then a lower dose might be a sensible modification.

Great Video - I had exactly the same experienced. I took finasteride (0.5mg) per day for 4 months. No problem with sex but my mood starts to change, I feel depressed, more anxious and hopeless. I have decided to stop it a month ago and after 4 days, I have started to feel better. I do not have brain frog or anxiety at nighttime anymore. I live a country where is not possible to get topical finasteride, plus we have few data about this new solution. I was planning to take finasteride (0.2/day) for 3 months and then 3 months break, but I do not find any research paper about it. Most of time people take or do not take finasteride, but nobody knows, what happen if you take it, then stop it, then take it again.... It could potentially make things worse as your body will never get use to this medical treatment.
@skrajina8037

There is a very simple solution to that. First of all EVERYONE who is taking finasteride should use glycine and ashwagandha. These 2 compounds will negate the mental negative side effects that fin might give you. Second is use topical fin cuz it gets absorbed in the blood way less.

A medical student here. These changes are in line with what I experienced as well. Has been 26 months since I started fin. I had some low back pain since starting finasteride, but not anymore. However, there was a time I transitioned to dut (stronger DHT inhibiition), and that increased my back pain through the roof. Libido and morning wood are definitely affected by fin, even more so by dut. Focus ability and brain fog are pretty subjective, so I would say they are hard to assess. For me, mental wellbeing and future mindset are affected, but I am not sure if it is because of fin or because I am suffering from hair loss. My theory is that if fin gives you the result you want (e.g. full head of hair with a perfect hairline), then the user will unlikely notice any side effect. Even if they did, the positive impact from getting your hair back would offset a lot of negative aspects you mentioned here. On the other hand, for those who are not responding as well to fin (e.g. hairline continues to regress, vertex thinning, hair density decreasing, etc), then the user will feel more depressed as time goes on and will experience some side effects.
@yathercantillano3874
@yathercantillano3874 Год назад
My personal anecdote, Finasteride/Minoxidil/Dermapen have done miracles for me. They have almost recovered my hairline completely after 9 months. Unfortunately, I still experienced the cognitive sides after DHT inhibition really build-up. It was after I tried incorporating Dutasteride where I really got messed up. Four days, using alongside my 1MG Finasteride and I get the most severe depression/anxiety and brain-fog I have ever had from medication. I was as neurotic/suucidal as a middle-aged hikikomori and had the cognitive performance of a vegetable, no joke. I still have hundreds of Dutasteride pills just rotting away, because I'm sure I'll just end up doing myself in if start this stuff again. Lately, I've been microdosing Fin while finding a way to effectively make topical Finasteride/Dutasteride, I live in the US. By far the worst of the anxiety/depression from these drugs is, at least for me, it's like it's an "impenetrable" layer of cognitive inhibition. Things like meditation/Cognitive-behavior-therapy barely help combat it. Just about the only thing that has helped slightly has been endorphins from exercise, diet-changes, and things like Kratom/Ashwaganda. I am certain it is because these DHT inhibitors directly effect my neurosteroid production and I am sensitive to it. Don't play around with this stuff. I don't believe in post-finasteride syndrome, but these meds have made me hyper-aware of sides from any medications/pharmaceuticals.

@Soriyou3 Год назад
@@yathercantillano3874 Thanks for the response. I actually have a quite similar experience as you do. I tried combining fin + dut because fin was not doing the trick for me. I started taking dut on top of fin to build dut's effect before I can completely transition to dut later. I took dut 0.5 mg + fin 1 mg almost every day (there were some days I skipped fin) and my mind was just not right. I was thinking of weird things and became very pessimistic. I stopped taking dut and the side effects went away. I believe mental side effects from fin are less compared to dut, but it can still manifest for some people, especially if they are not seeing the results they want. For people who are seeing the results, probably the positive effects can mitigate some of the negative mental effects. However for you, it sounds like you still had negative mental effects even though your hair was recovering. My question for you is, why did you combine dut then? If your hair was recovered with fin alone, is there a reason why you are experimenting with dut?

But I wanted my teenage hairline back! You are very lucky if you get any HAIRLINE regrowth from finasteride at all! From what I understand, Dutasteride is the drug primarily recommended if you're looking for substantial amounts of hair regrowth or have a really bad case of male pattern baldness. Hi Matt, thanks for the great information. I’m 60 yo and my main concern with fin is weight gain. Over the past 5 years of using 1mg/day oral, I’ve gained 20 pounds, and I have tried to keep this off. It’s not total laziness, but I’m getting to the point of giving up the effort because periods of good discipline just maintains my weight while the slightest relaxation notches up my weight, and apparently my set point. I just had my DHT tested but no results yet. Regardless of the findings, I was planning to reduce fin to 0.5mg/day oral, but I see that you were only taking 0.25mg, so I’ll try dropping to that. I don’t notice any sexual, Mental, or emotional side effects, just weight gain. And it hasn’t stopped my hair from thinning. Thanks again.
@exactly1176
@exactly1176 Год назад
The weight gain is because of age. Not because of finasteride. Again ... why blaming everything on finasteride ? You started finasteride at 55 years old. You are now 5 years older (60) and obsiously, lots of people gain some weight as they get older . This has nothing to do with finasteride as you would have gotten the same amount of weight if you were not on finasteride during those last 5 years. Try to go on a ketogenic diet by reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat per day. Also try fasting a bit. It will definitely help you lose weight.

Only sides I gotten was ball ache a week in for about an hour and never again thankfully. Didn’t hurt but it was like an itch you cant scratch. With this experiment I found out for myself that I can actually feel better mentally once I take some time off with Finasteride and then get back again. I spoke to a hair doc who is doing it also so it is not just me randomly trying to manipulate Finasteride usage manual. And even if the mental state improvements are placebo, I will keep taking less Fin and cycle it as long as I am getting hair protective benefits. It's only the FDA white knights who will always claim that Finasteride should be taken in a 1mg dose a day because FDA said so 25 years ago while forgetting that FDA was using data for this approva that didnt acknowlege what we know about micro dosing or research on topical Finasteride back in the days.

As other commenters have mentioned, this unfortunately has very little scientific value because of how likely the placebo effect is to be involved. A much more valuable way of testing this Matt, would be to have 2 jars of identical pills. One finasteride and one placebo. Have someone mix them up and then give you one jar or the other to use. Make notes of how you feel that month/2 months. Then take the other jar and do the same. Then you can discover which was which and if there was any meaningful difference that could be attributed to the finasteride.

Hi Matt, great and informative video! I was on finasteride for 8 months after I first noticed hair loss. During this period I found that I stopped thinking about sex as much and had nearly no morning wood (which would demonstrate this not to be nocebo). I decided to come off it for a month and the difference for me was extremely clear as I went from nearly no morning wood to everyday and libido was much higher after 5 days. I completely understand the majority of people are fine on oral finasteride but I just don’t think it’s for me. I’m still young, however, and want to keep my hair so I have a few questions. 1) I decreased my dose of oral finasteride to 0.25mg and had the same sides and all studies show dht is lowered practically the same on 0.25 or 1mg so how are you expecting to see a reduction in sides on this dosage? 2) I’ve watched your other video saying you were using RU over this period, are you going to make a separate video on this? 3) The study showing 0.25mg finasteride applied topically used a much higher density of finasteride topical but just a couple of sprays. Would using 0.25mg in 2ml achieve the same benefit as its less concentrated. 4) Also just wondering because it’s interesting, have you looked at the Mazzarella study (1997) on topical finasteride 0.005% twice daily? All participants achieved increased hair density after 16 months with 0 having any changes to testosterone or DHT levels? I have been on this for 4 months now and feel as good as I did off finasteride.

I truly believe that side effects of finasteride is under reported because I think guys are more concerned about stopping their hair loss than anything else, and most likely discount and ignore the side effects. Immediately when I started taking 1mg of finasteride every other day for the last 6 months, I started having side effects right away. 1. Lack of focus and attention to detail 2. Extreme tiredness, I always felt like I needed a nap. 3. Libido went down drastically, less hard erections. 4. Felt down all the time for no reason even when I should be excited or happy about something. 5. Lightheadedness, an overall feeling of being “off”. 6. Lack of emotional care or sympathy for others. 7. My memory suffered big time, I couldn’t remember a damn thing, I felt like I was getting dementia. 8. Slight headaches. I stopped taking finasteride for almost a month and things started to get better especially my libido and erections. My tiredness still was there but it wasn’t as bad like before. Mentally i started to improve but I think more time needs to take place for me to go back to being 100 percent normal. My hair loss definitely slowed down and I started losing less hair. But honestly the side effects is too overwhelming for me and has definitely made me feel like shit most of the time. I’m a firm believer that we all should take a break of taking finasteride for a month or 2. Then get back on it to maintain your hair. For me I think I’ll just take the pill 2 days out of week instead of 3 and see how I feel. Because at this point it’s been very difficult for me at work to focus and getting things done since my clarity has suffered as well.

After finasteride discontinuation it takes 14 days for DHT levels to return to normal, this is because the DHT suppressing properties of Fin continue to work after all the FIN has been washed out of your system (After 1-2 days). The reason why you can take breaks from FIN up to 3 months is because the half life of the 5AR-Enzyme is 30 days, which means that after 30 days half of the enzymes blocked by finasteride still remain and so even after 3 months some enzymes are still blocked by FIN. I think the most severe side effects of finasteride are the changes it causes in the neurochemistry of your body which result in the symptoms you listed above, also known as brain fog. Unfortunately these symptoms sound for many wishy washy, since everyone can have them at some point in their life, I for example suffered from brain fog for 2 years, and at that I neither had hair loss nor knew about finasteride. People can always argue that you having a hard time in life coincided with you taking finasteride. And most clinical studies used for fin safety approval don't really give the subjects a clear definition of 'depression', 'anxiety', 'tiredness', etc. to report them instead they only test for sexual dysfunction. This is also because it is really hard to asses the mental wellbeing of a human in a questionnaire with 3 options for side effects. Additionally the symptoms you described above for many sound completely normal? Like who hasn't a day feeling extremely tired? A day not being focused, etc.? For example when I had brain fog I thought it was completely normal since my life wasn't so shiny either before I got it, you only realize this after a LONG time. Whether finasteride causes a brain fog with the severity of mine (which was like hell, I fehlt I had dementia all the time) or a light version of it, which I guess most people can endure and go on with their life, idk, I haven't tried it, but I trust Matt and I think this experiment of him pretty much demonstrated that mentally you will feel better without FIN, but taking it won't ruin the quality of you life, the way brain fog ruined mine. So I think the brain fog caused by Fin is tolerable, although not having it at all is always better :) Now the only question is, is this worth not loosing hair? Since I obviously have a bias, considering I suffered from brain fog independently from finasteride, I probably won't try it due to extreme anxiety of the chances of re-experiencing the hell I luckily escaped. But if I had not experienced brain fog in the past I definitely would give it a shot, I mean Matt isn't dying either, obviously he still makes RU-vid, when I had Brian fog I wouldn't even imagine showing myself to the camera and talking to people since even talking felt exhausting. Now that I've gotten off topic, I might as well tell you the rest. When I told a friend of mine that I had Brian fog shortly after I recovered from it (I believe it was due to overstimulation by multimedia and carbs which I stopped by starting with less screen time, more exercise, diet change, meditation, etc.) he told me it was all placebo, which reminds me of the people telling those who experience side effects that it's nocebo.

Yes I would be more cautious with Finasteride oral and would be only willing to test topical 0.025%

You can but over time you may feel the difference in some ''stats'' and then you can lower the dose or take a break for 1 month and resume. Also supplementing creating helps with replenishing the DHT too

Thank you for sharing your experiment. Aren´t you affraid that you are going to lose hair you managed to maintain because of finasteride, after this long pause? I've recently seen episode from The Hair Loss Show (not sure if its polite to send the link here) where they explain that if you stop taking finasteride, you will rapidly get to the same level of baldness where you would be at this age as if you never even took finasteride. Not sure if that statement is true, but i highly recomment you to look up on this.

Thanks. I know this video. As I said. I am more than 3 months on no Finasteride but because I use a topical anti androgen + minoxidil I am not seeing any increased shedding or loss of hair thickness. If you only use Finasteride for hair loss prevention and then you stop for 3+ months, then you will definitely experience what docs from hair loss show were talking about.

I’ve been on 1mg of finasteride for about 4 months. Restored my crown completely. Hairline is better but not significant amount of change. My interest in sex is probably cut in half. I still have sex but not multiple rounds.

Been on Fin for 2 years. Just got my first sides ie. Small amount of gyno in my left nipple. Gonna get off Fin for 100 Days as well. Then reintroduce with topical finasteride. Maybe .025 or .05 solution.

The loads are better if you don't take Finasteride/Dutasteride by many guys me included. But I talked to guys who impregnated their partner while on finasteride also even if the load might have been lower. The question is, does it significantly affect your sperm volume or sperm motility?

What about Spironolactone which is an androgen receptor blocker? It doesn't block the conversion of DHT from testosterone.

There are so many potential biases in a self assessment protocol like this, I dont know where to start. The issue with a subjective measurement is that, regardless of your precautions, there will be some form of placebo that will feed on itself over time. We have learned that in nutritional epidemiology & psychology 50 years ago and we are still making the same mistakes over and over again.
@letsgethair

Sure man. However taking some time off of a medication like FIN (that is not treating life threatening conditions) won't harm you. I didn't have any major expectations before starting this experiment honestly...

Correct. They're actually some great studies done where one group of patients were counciled that finasteride has these and these side effects, while another group did not. The group that wasn't counseled basically had no difference from placebo whereas the counseled group telling them that this drug has side effects actually had 10 times the side effects. This tells me that any perceived side effects from finasteride are merely nocebo effects.

@@mortenbroue yep and to be fair when the second we get on finasteride we start 2nd guessing ourselves the second we are not walking around with a massive boner 24/7. It's so silly but it happens. I was wondering why before I was able to have sex twice in the same night no problem, then my nymphomaniac Puerto Rican lover came over yesterday for the first time in a while and was able to go for three sessions easily. You also have to realize it will vary woman to woman and day-to-day. When you're really think about it the same things you experienced on finasteride happened when you weren't on it but the nocebo effect is very real and you're psyching yourself into not being able to perform. Had you not known about those side effects you wouldn't have noticed anything.

Thanks for sharing your experience. One thing I wanted to share: Huberman's made an episode on hair loss. He says that using topical will suppress DHT systematically by a higer factor. So topical or oral doesn't make a difference unfortunately. Also, we need better studies on assessing incidences of side effects for prolonged use of finasteride. You noticed side effects after 7 years or so. Simply, the studies that assess long-term risk exclude those form the analysis that develop sides and then stop. See study "Adverse Event Reporting in Clinical Trials of Finasteride for Androgenic Alopecia."
