Penetration and expansion test of the 9mm +P Hornady CRITICAL DUTY 135 gr JHP using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, and retained weight. Test gun was a Glock 19.
VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO TESTS ON THIS CHANNEL:
Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. There are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data. The law-abiding citizen bears ultimate responsibility for their ammunition choice and insuring reliability in their handgun.

February 3, 2019: I chronographed a fresh batch of this ammo (2018 production) and from the Glock 19 the average was 1080 fps, and from the Gock 17 it was 1101. Discouraging, and I've removed it from my carry rotation. BTW, review of the 124 gr +P Critical Duty is pending. Velocities of the 124 +P in both the G19 and G17 met or exceeded the advertised of 1175 fps.

One of the things I notice with Critical Duty is the bullet's ability to hold together, even at higher than normal velocities. From what I've seen, I think Critical Duty's best application is in pistol caliber carbines and AR pistols with barrels 8 inches or longer. If you have access to any PCC's, I'd like to see gel tests of how bullets hold up when shot from them.
@yoepix

Horandy released a video from the designer of these bullets and gave a pretty good breakdown of the differences of the duty line vs the defense line. The duty line has a slightly different composition that is supposed to be more barrier blind than the defense line. If my memory serves me correct they even said the defense line will expand better vs bare gelatin and will suffer more through barriers and the duty is just better on average combined for all of the standard FBI tests.
@Southernguitar74
@Southernguitar74 5 лет назад
So one batch was slower by 45 fps (compared to the 1125 in this vid) and you discarded the ammo because of it? 45 fps can be the difference between one shot to the next. I like this round for winter carry in my G19, because of the bullet design, but I don't find the reading of 1080 fps or 1125 fps to be astounding in any way, especially in +p...Even with the slightly heavier than average 135gr projectile...Still, I am.sure it would work fine in most defensive applications. Thanks
@DickTickles
@DickTickles 5 лет назад
@@Southernguitar74 I think is issue is that this is supposed to be +P ammo and it's moving more like standard pressure, which is something "The Oregonian" has covered well when it comes to 9mm standard vs +P. 45 FPS is not insignificant, but it's not something that would make me stop using it if it's been reliable in my gun. The price is not bad for this ammo tho as you get 25 rds a box. About the only reason I wouldn't use it is because Winchester White Box JHP works fine and is $16 per 50 rds.

One important note about these rounds to keep in mind- they were designed as a DUTY round to be used out of a 4" or longer barrel. I have experienced that out of a shorter barrel, they do NOT acheive the velocity intended for reliable expansion. What happens is the round tends to zip through media like an FMJ, causing overpenetration and minimal damage to target. I noticed this first with my Sig P938. The main culprit is powder not having ample time in barrel to ignite. I was noticing a HUGE muzzle flash, and unburned powder stuck to my paper target at 3 yds. This round was clearly designed to perform optimally in duty length barrels, and in those it performs very well as shown in the video. For those little pocket guns, one would be better served using the Critical Defense round with its low flash (faster burning) powder. If a heavier weight and +P is your cup of tea (as mine is) try getting Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P Short Barrel, which is designed specifically for these 3" and shorter barrel lengths. Conversely, do not feed a 4" barreled gun with the Short Barrel stuff, because they will go over velocity thresholds for optimal expansion, and the petals will overexpand, fold back on the roubd, and youre back to square one with what's basically an FMJ again. Just my 2 cents!

Building off what you said: I really like the 135gr +P Critical Duty for winter carry. People wearing more clothing, you can conceal a bigger gun. For summer carry, I usually prefer a subcompact 9mm with 147gr standard pressure HST (which expands phenomenally regardless of barrel length and IME the recoil is very manageable). Main reason I passed on the 150gr Micro HST. I do also like the CZ 82 and have been considering it as a summer carry, especially with the Buffalo Bore 95gr +P JHPs, but it's not a very popular gun in America so it can be a bit elusive.

I have the hi point c9 with 3.5 inch barrel these rounds get plenty expansion. About the same as in this test but i shot an meat target with 2 pork ribs a watermelon inbetween and some t-shirts on both sides.it was not as expanded as the regular Remington 115 grain hollow points ive shot but these critical duties expanded every time consistently out of my 3.5in barrel vs some regular hollow points ive shot where u get 1 or 2 that decided not to expand.

This is the only ammo I carry although there are many good options, this is what I can get at my local stores and I am confident in its performance. Good stuff even though it does not expand as much as some other brands, I personally like the penetration. Adequate penetration is important for me because you can't guarantee the body size or clothing of the person kicking in your front door or catching you off guard late at night while walking to your car. No telling if the bad guy is going to be a 145 pound runt or a 300 pound monster wearing a leather jacket. I want to make sure I am good to go for either situation and think this round fits the bill. Just my thoughts.

The whole reason they made the Critical DUTY, is the fact that they discovered the Critical DEFENSE didn't do all that well against certain types of barriers in the FBI protocol tests. They solved the problem by using hard cast lead (6% antimony) and locking the lead core in place with an interlock ring and a cannelure (low tech but it works). This achieves pretty much the same result as bonding the core to the jacket, keeping the 2 together to reduce lost mass. The reason they didn't use bonding is because hard cast lead won't bond to gilding metal, you need the softer, more pure lead for bonding. And they kept the soft rubber tip that keeps the hollow point from filling up with debris (clothing fibers, wallboard, etc) and making the bullet act like a FMJ. The biggest difference between the Critical Duty and Defense is the different lead they use for the core, which makes a big difference in downrange consistency. BTW, this is all I'll carry in my 9mm from here on out.
@facepacker99

It's very important to note that the DUTY rounds are designed for 4" or longer barrels. If you carry this in a sub compact, it won't perform well. Switch to the critical defense for less than 4" barrels.
@LeeroyJNCOs

facepacker99 Source of that? Not that I don't believe you, I've just never heard that before.
@facepacker99
@facepacker99 9 лет назад
Every test with critical duty rounds out of a sub compact. They don't reliably achieve the velocity needed to expand because they are harder lead. Also, hornady will tell you themselves that the duty round is designed for a service size handgun.
@davidandrus323
@davidandrus323 9 лет назад
facepacker99 While I agree with the theory that a longer barrel is better for this, I disagree with it being because it's a harder lead... lead is lead is lead. Hardness is inherent. The extra powder not having time to combust would be a bigger issue, resulting in lower FPS.
@facepacker99
@facepacker99 9 лет назад
Ok. Hornady says they use harder lead. They must be mistaken? Lol yes, powder burn is the obvious issue, but I assure it's harder.
@davidandrus323
@davidandrus323 9 лет назад
facepacker99 Well, if it's harder then by definition it's not just lead. Since elements have a specific weight, something was added to it. I'm looking at both boxes now, and don't see that distinction, so I'm assuming you saw that info somewhere else, website or something?

Your testing of Hornady Critical Duty has me convinced this is the best round for my 9mm and .38. However, I recommend everybody first prove your rounds in your gun before trusting them. I purchased a box of .38+p Critical Defense and they would not fire in my S&W Airweight. I returned them and Hornady confirmed they were defective due to the primers not to specs. They were too short and did not seat fully in the primer pocket. Lesson learned; prove your firearm AND ammo.

@@willwilliams2944 well it turns out if you have something with a shorter barrel like a glock 26 as opposed to a 19 or 17, its better to stick with the critical defense. Great review! Two questions if I may. 1) If I were to use this ammunition as my primary carry round, what would you recommend as a cheap alternative to practice with? I'm looking to match POA / POI, recoil, etc...as close as possible. 2) Would you recommend this round across the board with respects to full sized 9mm handguns (Canik TP9-SA) and summer-specific pocket carry 9mm handguns (LC9s Pro)? I ask because I want to keep my ammunition choice the exact same between the two platforms for consistency and ease of stocking up. THANK YOU!

@TheWitnesserer 8 лет назад
+drake man I wouldn't say they are better, but we can get Gold Dots, HST, and Ranger Ts in boxes of 50 for $30 or less depending on where you go. I have yet to see Critical Defense or Critical Duty in anything bigger than 25 rounds for 9mm, .38 special, and .357 magnum or 20 rounds for .45 ACP and .40 S&W. $30 tops for 50 rounds of premium defense ammo kinda trumps this dollar-per-round bullspit. HydraShoks used to be available in 50 round boxes as well, but they might've stopped that since the HSTs really took off.

+tnoutdoors9 From what I understand the Critical Duty performs best in 4 inch and longer barrels such as your glock 19. In a shorter barrel such as a 3 inch P938 they do not expand as tests by theshootingbull410. The critical defense is designed for short barrels, those did expand in bare and denim tests. Too much velocity lost in a short barrel.

I just found this garbage ammo from cheaperthandirt.com called Maxxtech, its 1000 rounds for like $160. The cool part is that for every 100 rounds theres 7 or 8 failure to fires or failure to eject and its great practice because you never know when its going to happen. Besides that, I use Blazer, Speer, Magtech, Remington Umc which I've had great luck shooting. Speer is probably the highest quality target ammo for the best price, right around .21 cents a round.

I just received my order of Double Tap ammo. I got 135gr & 165 gr .40 cal thats thr fastest ive found without being a +P+ ammo and they have the hardest hitting ft lbs of energy. I also got 9mMMI 115gr that has around 450ft lbs of energy. Ive start to stack my Hornady CD with these in my guns. Pretty amazing velocities too, much faster than most brand +P and still being a standard pressure load although I couldn't find chamber pressure data on the loads.
@kustomhooligans
@kustomhooligans 8 лет назад
Their 9mm hits with as much force as other brands +P .40 call rounds! Their 135 & 165gr .40 rounds are just SICK, almost 550ft lbs of energy @ 1375fps, crazy! The average Remington round has 360ft lbs of energy @ about 1050fps. Double tap is reasonably priced too. I still believe shot placement trumps all other factors. You'll do more damage shooting someone in the frontal lobe with a 226LR than you will a .45 in the chest. Just my opinion.

If you're interested in home defense, only, I would suggest a tactical shotgun. Short barrel length. Lightweight polymer stock. Pistol grip.

I have a benelli nova tactical in the bedroom upstairs. I'm looking for a handgun that I can have downstairs. 2 middle of the day home invasions in my area, have made this necessary.

+lou stool I keep a Springfield Armory .45 XDs (3.3 inch barrel) in the glove compartment of my car. The magazine will only hold 5 rounds, but, I have small hands. And, due to the thin profile of a single stack, I can get a good grip on the gun. Surprisingly enough, it's recoil is quite manageable. I carry Hydra Shok hollow points in the magazine when I'm not at the range. Watch a few XDs vids on RU-vid. Hope this helped.

Great video! I love how thorough and precise you are doing these tests. For all the naysayers out there doubting a 9mm has a sufficent amount of stopping power this should be good enough to prove how far ammunition has come over the years. I use this round in my pt11 g2 and i trust my life to both this round and my gun choice for my ec. I also have a g19 i use the same ammo in but in the zombie load and a glock 23 i use hornandy defense rounds in.

the side comparison is nice, great video, i liked it, the line up is good quailty, from looking at this i like the horady critical duty, it is more pointy so less likely to have a malfunction.

I took a IIIA soft panel and hit it with Critical Duty 9mm +P 135gr, then 124gr Gold Dot, and an FMJ. The Critical Duty really trucked on into that panel...It was begging to pass through where as the Gold Dot penetrated pretty impressive but had more expansion and the FMJ did alright. I really like Critical Duty...I originally bought it because everyone here in Upstate NY grabs HST's and Gold Dots as soon as they are stocked, glad it turned out to be a good round. I keep my Glock loaded with HST's and carry a spare mag with Critical Duty or Gold Dots. Gotta love having options!

Gen 4 Glock 26 so 3.42inches. If I wanted to be really generous, I'd grab a buddies G34.
@nateo200
@nateo200 7 лет назад
Exactly. Now I love me some Gold Dots and I prefer them as my second load during the winter time and generally they do expand bigger than the Critical Duty's but the Critical Duty's almost always expanded, maybe not as wide and dramatic as HST's which I've shot tons of in multiple calibers but they always expand enough to do some damage but penetrate enough to hit what is needed without over penetration. *I'll go ahead and upload that video of me shooting that soft panel*, it's not science, I didn't have a clay backstop but some off video tests did show similar results. Critical Defense feels like a watered down Critical Duty but it does pretty well.
@nateo200
@nateo200 7 лет назад
Wow! That is pretty impressive. I really hope Critical Duty is given more use by LE officers, particularly guys like State Troopers, or Sheriff's Deputies that are assigned to areas where traffic stops are going to happen. This round is pretty great for that type of thing....I wish Gold dots had a tiny bit more penetration in a special model, I find them to be better than HST's (albeit not as beautiful expanded!). I wouldn't hesitate to trust a Speer Gold Dot with my life when defending myself but I KNOW the Critical Duty 9mm Parabellum +P round very well, I spent more money they I should have shooting it at the range and it has a unique recoil. I think that 135grain weight is ideal. It's a great balance between 124gr which gets you a bit more penetration than 115gr but not so much weight like a 147grain where its effeciency out of a short barrel pistol becomes questionable. Out of my G26 (check out my link above). The ammo did very well.

These are the rounds that I carry. I have done a lot of testing with them and had them test against other very well known and proven types of ammo. When it came to barrier penetration, and then into a simulated threat, these rounds consistently out performed everything else.

Been looking for a review of this rnd with the use of a 4" inch barrel. Thank you for NOT testing this with a 3"inch barrel like so many other reviewers have! I have my CZ 75B loaded with these so I would thing I might get slightly less penetration and slightly more expansion with the longer barrel.
@GetMeThere1
@GetMeThere1 12 лет назад
Seeing these tests has really been illuminating for me. Most importantly, it has shown a STRICTLY consistent (negative) correlation between expansion and penetration. Sure, that's just obvious physics--but it never really sunk into my head thoroughly before. Here we see the petals are "bent back," and we get more penetration vs bullets that really "flower." It demonstrates how REALLY VALUABLE the flowering bullets are for civilians: excellent effect, and reduced risk of bystander injury.
