Finally got an awning…and a 270 one at that!
NOTE: Overland Pros provide extra poles to use for the edges of the awning. They do not need to be installed for the awning to work. You can install them if you’d like to provide rigidity to the edges but it adds to the deployment time and are not really necessary. It’s nice they at least provide it. I won’t be using them. I stored them in my garage so as to not add weight or have more stuff to pack.
Get the awning here:

(This video is not sponsored by Overland Pros but they DID give me a 20% discount to try out and review their awning.)

Nice set up. I like the fact you always do things as the majority of us can do, both installs and budget.

That’s my goal man. Cuz sometimes there are videos out there that have products that are just unattainable. And trust me I want them too! Lol. But I have to know the smart way to spend for mods- which I will heavily invest in and which I can get away with something more wallet friendly

For a budget 270 degree awning, it works. Figure out the mounting and poles and if needed the guy lines and you're good. It's simple, but inexpensive.

I've gotten rid of it. After a few months of use, it sucks.

Just found your show. Like it and it’s nice you have the same rack I do and the same color and year jeep. So I will be looking at same much as possible of your back library of videos.

Did you figure out why your awning sags? I was concerned when you were fab'ing your brackets to your rail because the aluminum flats might bow inward with screw tension. Adding an aluminum spacer (hardware store screw isle in one of the zillions of drawers of specialty parts) to your bolts between the Overland Pro rail and your fab'd plates would prevent this bowing and allow the bolt-nut tension to bear directly from the rail to the plate. This bowing (if it is) might be allowing your awning to sag outward as it lays against your roofrack sidewall runners.
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 3 года назад
Thanks for looking out! But it's def not that. The bowing is coming from the inside. Basically there's a lot of fabric and the rail is too thin and the weight of the fabric is what's making it bow down like that. At the end where it all pivots isn't strong enough to hold the weight of the poles and fabric. It sucks because I've tried EVERYTHING to fix it even some ratchet straps

Looks tiny. Going to go with the SlumberJack Roadhouse tarp and then eventually build my own 8' freestanding 270 degree awning.

@@BaptismOverland I really appreciate the honesty. What do you think about the SlumberJack Roadhouse tarp? Also, have you seen the 3 part 270 degree awning DIY some guy did? I'm gonna buy the plans for $20 and make my own. Gonna use the SlumberJack until then. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G2lcv6eP4t8.html Where do you overland? I’ve wanted a 270 also but the more I see them used I’m thinking I don’t. They don’t have enough coverage unless the sun is directly above, or if raining, it’s coming straight down. Also seems everything under it would need to be right up next to the vehicle. Hmmm 🤔
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 3 года назад
It’s valid. Same questions I had. But it actually works better than the straight roll out awning. Coming in from the sides you’ll def not get coverage on those. But the 270 gives you great coverage. I saw a lot at the SE expo this past weekend and we were there from early morning to late afternoon and it really provided shade to some vendors

@@liljack313 ok so I’m torn lol. On one hand I got some footage but on the other hand, by time I was ready to interview some vendors, it was so hot out that my camera kept overheating (it was ridic hot). So I’m debating whether or not to create a video with the footage I at least have

@@BaptismOverland I understand that. You've got quality standards you want to meet. Personally, I'd enjoy just a montage of the vehicles and such. But I completely understand if it doesn't fit what you want for the channel.

@@liljack313 Eh. Aint no such thing as what will or won't fit on my channel haha. I'm just worried I won't have enough content to really make a substantial video. It'll last like what, 2 minutes? haha.

Do the support poles use the twist lock mechanism? Have you had any issues with those poles so far?
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 3 года назад
The poles do twist to lock and no issues but will I buy this awning again? Prob not to be honest. It’s a pain to put up and I have to store the poles separately etc. I would want a free standing next time or the ones with poles built in already

Do you think this version would work in tandem with a rooftop tent? I’m new to this and just got an overland trailer with a tent and am wanting to add an affordable awning.
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 3 года назад
Of course it does. IN FACT, some of the hard shell RTTs have a rail along the sides of that you can mount your awnings to. It’s the dream setup.

Any awnings will work but you'll have to see if you can clear the tailgate when it opens.

You really should put jamb nuts on the bolts, locking then into the channel by pinching the aluminum. Mounting with just nuts inside the basket is constantly pulling on the awning channel, a force that it is not designed for. I predict awning failure if keep it the way it is.
@BaptismOverland
@BaptismOverland 2 года назад
I agree. I'm looking into others because I shouldn't have to modify the awning to make it work properly. It should come out of the factory that way
