No one is going to believe this, but when I was 21 years old, I took a Rack grade M16A2 with Iron sights, M855 Ball and made a first round impact on the standard issue USMC qualification target at 1,000 yards. I hit it in the head. Open sights, using a Canvas web sling, and an issue leather work glove. I don’t remember how many times I hit it, but I feel dam proud of myself now. I never thought it was a big deal until I saw this video. I dialed the rear sight to 800 Meters plus a couple clicks until it maxed out. then as my breath exited my lungs and my front sight post was even with the target frame, all while putting a very slow steady trigger squeeze. I made a few hits.

A 20" 1:9 twist M16A2 with open sights was the standard then for us Army Grunts in the late 80s. We had the pop up targets from 25m to 300m and advanced marksmanship moving targets as well. M855 with a 20" barrel can hit 800 plus meters on a good day easily. Much respect to you Marine! Rangers Lead The Way!!

Question for you sir,......accuracy is dependent upon sound/signature mitigation & back pressure? I understand a can will shrink group sizes down for most rifles but I'm not sure it will make that much difference. Maybe a 10% to 15% decrease at the longer distances.. ammunition and optic along with the ability to spot misses play a larger role at those distances has been my experience, and is more important in my opinion. What do you think?

Have to say probably one of the best exhibitions that actually ANSWERS THE QUESTION!! Army qualifying with the M16 A1 (80's) we go out to 300m with 3 sec to kill two pop-ups using the iron sights as we had no fancy ACOG. M193 ball. Obviously, you prove it can go out another 100 (you did not state the twist rate of that barrel). Anyway, I picked-up a UTG 3-9x32 for Christmas a couple of years ago and did quite well first time out. Then 2nd time, consistency was all over. Realized turrets were opposite of moving POI to POA! Recently bore-sighted it and corrected the collar spacing so hoping to perform better next time. Would like to know what you used to get scope picture into video? Demonstration of holdover best I've seen to date!

The 77SMK kinda changed the game for AR15s, especially in the shorter barrels. I have a 12.5 MLG(regain some of that 18 RLG softness) i run a 2.5-10 on, and find that while yes its not quite as good at range as my SPR, the difference inside ~600y is minimal enough that if you have a reason to want more agility / storage practicality, its an easy tradeoff. The falloff of 556 past that, with any practical barrel length, really makes little difference and its all about your wind skills at that point. I do think the 13.9/14.5 is more where you want to be, but i had a specific place i wanted to be able to store it, and the 12.5 + LAW made that work. The only thing holding the setup back at range is the loss of running something like a 18x MK5, where i think a vast majority of the power of the more modern SPR setup lays. There is no reason you couldnt run something like that on a 12.5, i just thought a lighter 10x with a faster reticle was a more balanced choice, for myself. Do think the basic rule of take the longest barrel you have no reason not to take still applies, but i think a lot of people tend to overestimate how much advantage that longer barrel gets you. Its power really lies more in the wiggle room it gets you when shooting at changing UKD intermediate targets than extending range, but again its pretty minimal. Keep it comin man. Criminally underrated channel.
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Год назад
Great comments here that I 100% agree with. For sure I think the success you see in longer barrel AR precision rigs is usually due to the optics package but as you mention often times these optics packages aren't the most practical on a "fighting" AR. Personally I don't see the need in a 5.56 AR with a barrel longer than 14.5" anymore. I've found the shorter barrel rifles very capable for the distances I want to shoot 5.56, if I need more energy or distance I've got other larger calibers I can utilize. Thanks for watching! I'm a new channel so we're just getting going but it's your support that's going to make us big time in no time!

I would like to see this same type of test using various cartridges/calibers into 1/2” pine plywood. The marines use to use this as a test of lethality. If the bullet exits the board it would be considered a lethal wound. I think if it enters the board but doesn’t exit, that would be considered a life threatening wound. I think you’ll get a lot of views from it too. By the way, me and my brother was just discussing the maximum range of a .556 using cheap 55 grain ammo with an LPVO. So I couldn’t believe when this video popped up into my feed. With the added bonus of using 77 grain ammo. Thanks! About two weeks ago I came across one of your videos (MRAD vs. RPR) and loved it. Great format, excellent content and presentation. Subscribed on the spot. Since you have the distance and you've shown what a 77 grain .223 round can do, may I suggest you consider what the 224 Valkyrie can do with at least a 20" barrel and 80-95 grain bullets. I've been a big fan of the round since it came out and use strictly for long range shooting, in my case steel out to 1K. My ballistic app tells me my 88 ELDM will stay supersonic out to 1200 yards and the 95 SMK out to 1300, (24" barrel, 1:6T) but as yet I don't have access to that distance, but you sure do and then some. Back around 2009 John Feamster, that’s the champion shooter who wrote Black Magic, a book about maximizing AR performance, was working for the USAMU loading department. I met him while assisting the USAMU deliver the SDM Course at Ft. Benning. I told him my 1000 yard load was 24.8 Grains of RE-15 under an 80 grain Berger perched in Win. Brass primed with Win. Primers, a very accurate load but very high pressure. He told me the USAMU long range load used a powder not available commercially. I think it was a St. Mark powder, which is supposed to get high velocity at low pressure from heavy bullets. That powder may now be available commercially but I do not know its label, you? My thought is what ever that powder, if its burn is not too slow it might get heavy VLDs to the long line from barrels shorter than 20 inches.
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Год назад
Can't say I've ever heard of St Mark powder. I have heard many commercial and military loads use powders not commercially available though. @@MountainsMulletsMerica The USAMU does indeed shoot handloaded ammunition in some competitions as well as factory match in some competitions. At least when I compared 90 grain Serria Game changers (~3000) vs 168 (2600) BTHP all 550 yards. My wind hold was Double with the 308 vs the .243 with those loads.

This makes me feel good about my 14.5 and 55 grain ammo. Longest shoot I could ever possibly take is 1,000 yards in a river bottom close by, probably would never try because it has roads on both ends. A few open areas may get to 500 yards, but most are closer to 250 yards. The longest range open to the public is 135 yards.

I used to have a monthly opportunity to shoot in 1000 yard competitions on the Scott Mountain Range at Ft. Knox. My preferred division, Iron sight US Service Rifle. It’s the most difficult shooting there is but that’s what makes it so compelling. In fact it helps shooters to get to the highest levels of marksmanship since it requires extraordinary marksmanship just to post mediocre scores. So, at any rate, I would encourage you to explore the 1000 yard experience by shooting at 4.5 inch diameter bullseye’s at 100 yards using as issued irons. The goal should be to group 20 rounds in the half minute arena. When you get close to that mark in prone sling supported position go to Camp Perry and attend the USAMUs Small Arms Firing School. That’ll get you the credentials to shoot in Service Rifle Competitions, including 1000 yard completions there. First start by getting a Service Rifle Competition Rule Book from the CMP ( Civilian Marksmanship Program).

Hell yeah!!! Was trained with the 20" barrel in the Marine Corps and National Guard and it reaches out there for distance, but so does the barrel. Was trained with the 16" barrel when I worked for the state, but still seemed a little long for a multi-purpose rifle. Nevertheless, I have owned a 16" inch Bushmaster and Daniel Defense upper and two 14.5" pin and welded Daniel Defense versions. Yes, it would be great to get the tax stamp and run an 11.5" SBR upper, but currently like in Washington State with a so called "Assault Weapons Ban" signed into law:( Luckily, I was able to acquire a Daniel Defense M4A1 rifle with the 14.5 pin and welded rifle prior to the law going into affect. I spent a lot of time researching what I wanted if this was going to be the last SHTF rifle I would be able to own in my state (planning to move to Idaho). Why the 14.5" pin and welded? Short as I can get it with it still being legal. I personally saw no real advantage to the 16" barrel versions with the carbine and mid length gas systems as far as shooting it compared to the 14.5". The only real advantage was that the flash suppressor/muzzle break did not have to be pin and welded. I could shoot center mass at 500 yards all day with all of them with open sights (as the Marine Corps trained me). However, you take that 14.5" and add a bi-pod on the free float rail and add a ACOG or VCOG type scope and what does that do for your lethality? Guess you just proved that;)

Certainly winds could mix things up a bit but out to 800 yds with that setup and 77gr ammo was very doable and consistent. The key is being able to spot impacts, if you’re conditions don’t let you spot impacts/ misses it becomes a real challenge. In my opinion that’s where a harder hitting caliber might have an advantage, That extra energy makes spotting easier. Super fun pushing the envelop though!

US Service Rifle Division of NRA Long-Range Competition proves the match conditioned AR-15 A2 and A4 can shoot some loadings which will reach the 1000 yard line nose-on and where aimed within 2 MOA when fired by High Master Competitors. The point of it is it takes a great amount of knowledge and skill to get good hits at 1000 yards from an AR but it’s a lot of fun especially using iron sights and it helps those who have an interest in developing their marksmanship to the highest level. For sure, without some marksmanship training hitting where aimed at 1000 yards with an iron sight AR is not at all likely.
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Год назад
1000 yds with an iron sight 556 AR is an awesome accomplishment! For practical long range shooting like demonstrated in the video I’m relatively confident out to 600-800 yds. Beyond that I felt like performance of this package really fell apart. That said however, super fun to try to push the limits on what the setup is capable of! Thanks for watching!
@charlesludwig9173
@charlesludwig9173 Год назад
@@MountainsMulletsMerica yeah, long range with the AR is just the most fun. My scores are pretty pathetic usually due to not correctly countering for wind. Even shooting an 80 grain VLD I can only muster an MOA wind constant of 10, meaning just a 1 mph full value wind change will displace bullet over 10 inches, which precludes enough X-Ring hits to win anything.
@MountainsMulletsMerica
@MountainsMulletsMerica Год назад
@@charlesludwig9173 man that's essentially zero margin for error. Impossible to judge a 1mph change on the fly and failure to stay on top of that means you're out of the running. That's gotta be a fun challenge though!
@charlesludwig9173
@charlesludwig9173 Год назад
@@MountainsMulletsMericaYeah, considering you’re shooting a bullet that will barely make it to 1000 yards nose-on from iron sights in sling supported prone position sometimes in fog which requires a strategy for aiming, it can be extremely difficult to get hits in the 20 inch 10 Ring even in a no wind condition. Add a non prevailing wind and the only thing for sure is the winning shooter will be incredibly skilled as well as lucky. For me, the challenge of it has inspired Marksmanship development beyond comprehension, only tempered by my vision. At any rate, Marksmanship development promoted by .223 shooting at the long line has helped me earn the US Distinguished Rifleman Badge, the NRA American High-Power Rifleman Award in Long-Range, as well as a position assisting the USAMU deliver SDM, TTT, and SAFS Training. It’s been a fun trip that began on an afternoon heading to a skeet range on a Military Reservation which I somehow missed to end up on a 1000 yard range where I was able to observe what looked like more fun than skeet shooting.

I know this is an old video, 1 year at this point, but I think your results with the Wolf ammo was evident at 100 yds. the groups just opened up that much more not to mention the spread in velocity making it more challenging to hit your target at distance. It would be interesting to see what the 55gr. would do with some quality ammo that shot tight groups from the start. Of course they would still be more susceptible to the wind than the 77gr.and probably going subsonic sooner losing stability. I'm sure the down range energy out of a 14.5 bbl might be enough to hit the steel, but would it get good penetration on a "critter" of some size for a battle rifle to do the job? Would still work as a stand off round. Love your videos, awesome shooting area, we get to enjoy it vicariously thru you. Keep it up.

depending on who you talk too, and if you radar it, the IMI ammo is generally loaded hot as piss without as much regard for accuracy. I was looking for your video on mk18 that you had (can't seem to find it) but I was going to say that accuracy noted out of that daniel is not great. We tested some 55 grain IMI lately and it was exactly as stated, loaded hot, and didn't group well. Just thought we would mention that you may want to go elsewhere for ammo, hell even AAC's new line of match ammo I'd trust more for consistency, especially for the value. That said, great videos, keep up the good work. Not going to tell you how to shoot, you are clearly doing it right, that was the only gripe. Perhaps that particular line is better, but we haven't had much luck with the IMI stuff. You got the right grain, but probably could grab another brand.
