/ xrm150 I share great stuff on there!
This A-4 Skyhawk is flown by Dave Dollarhide at the 2014 Tico Warbird Airshow. I hope you enjoy this video! I have to say this is the video I am most proud of to date! I could not of done this without the help of my friend Dave Dollarhide and I hope you visit his RU-vid channel Pennyskin. He has other great videos on there that I am sure you will like. This A-4 Skyhawks home is at the Valliant Air Command in Titusville, Fl and you can visit their website here www.vacwarbirds...
Here is some info about the A-4
The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk is a carrier-capable attack aircraft developed for the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The delta winged, single-engined Skyhawk was designed and produced by Douglas Aircraft Company, and later by McDonnell Douglas. It was originally designated the A4D under the U.S. Navy's pre-1962 designation system.
The Skyhawk is a light-weight aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 24,500 pounds (11,100 kg) and has a top speed of more than 600 miles per hour (970 km/h). The aircraft's five hardpoints support a variety of missiles, bombs and other munitions and was capable of delivering nuclear weapons using a low altitude bombing system and a "loft" delivery technique. The A-4 was originally powered by the Wright J65 turbojet engine; from the A-4E onwards, the Pratt & Whitney J52 was used.
Skyhawks played key roles in the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, and the Falklands War. Fifty years after the aircraft's first flight, some of the nearly 3,000 produced remain in service with several air arms around the world, including from the Brazilian Navy's aircraft carrier, São Paulo.

Ahh, remember the good old days when American aviation contractors would make something that came in under budget, exceed expectations tremendously and eventually serve well beyond it's anticipated service life ...
@PaiSAMSEN
@PaiSAMSEN 4 года назад
It's what Douglas"s design team in general, and Ed Heinemann in particular, were legendary for. Funny thing was, the Skyhawk achieve so much in its service, yet it never really achieve its original purpose - completely replace A-1 Skyraider, which was another aircraft designed by Ed Heinemann. If only we still have someone like him nowaday. PS - Ed Heinemann also play a part in designing the F-16, while McDonnell Douglas was the key designer of F-15 and F/A-18 (before Boeing came and ruin everything), which should explain why all of these exceed their expectations and become total badass despite being a very mundane and simple design. One could only speculate what would happen if YF-23 were picked instead of YF-22.

There's a reason they're still flown by Red air contractors. Goofy lil things and not super maintenance friendly, but they're a damn good platform. This coming from me after 7 years on the F-16. Which in and of itself is a story of success beyond the design expectation, but that's a Story for another day.

I was an Aviation Electrician on the A-4F at NAS Lemoore, CA. When I was with VA-127 (I'm dating myself if you know squadron designations), the Blue Angels took 6 of our best birds for their practice aircraft and left us with their old birds. I made the final deployment of VA-164 (Airwing 21) on CV-19 (USS Hancock), which was also decommissioned upon return to Alameda,CA. Good old birds. I miss them! I may not miss the flight deck too much, but the airplanes were great.

Did the cockpit look the same or is this one a little run down?
@davekisor1486
@davekisor1486 5 лет назад
@@Xrm150 From what little I can see, the cockpit layout and hardware were very different. There were no "glass" instruments on our birds. The AJB-3 indicator (the ball) was centered above the distance and heading indicator. The clock was in the instrument panel, the wet compass was to the right of center on the windshield frame. This cockpit is much more modernized.

What lovely aircraft, faithful with easy and cheap maintenance in regard to maintenance of warplanes , in Malvinas war they were used at the maximum their capacity by flying very low, almost touching the sea or rubbing it, with insufficient fuel and with mission of bombing the english warship but not without first have to elude or evade all the british modern missile system.

@2011SoxMD36
@2011SoxMD36 Год назад
There's plenty of skilled hands with maintenance experience on types like these still around. Now the Sabre and the early MiGs that are still flying, those ones give me the same question. As for parts, there's a fair amount of common components from one airframe to another, a lot of your structural stuff can be shop fabricated IAW the manuals, and ultimately it's just like a classic car. If there's enough demand for the parts, i.e. enough still in flight, SOMEONE will produce those common high-failure or time-change items and make good money dishing them out.

Saeed Sh there are 8 Ex RNZAF A-4K's that are currently flying for draken international in florida which they bought off us for only $7.9 million, they had been refitted with sophisticated electronics, including radar usually found in F-16s (project kahu), and standard Nato air-to-air refuelling equipment, just before we grounded them, we were suppose to be re-equipped with F-16 in 2002 but our government in their wisdom disbanded our attack wing in our airforce, now we just have a glorified coast guard!

Great video. Looks like an A-4E. How are you getting electrical power? Whenever starting an A-4 ground air for the starter, like in the video, was needed. Also ground electric power, plugged into the recepticle on the port wing, just outboard and aft of the 20 mm gun.

That question is beyond me =) However the pilot has a RU-vid channel. His channel name is Pennyskin Maybe he can answer it for you. =)

I wonder how these would fare in modern combat with upgrades in avionics and engines?
@Xrm150
@Xrm150 7 лет назад
+Ron Tate there is a company here that had done just that. It's called Drakken international. The upgraded them to have same avionics as f-16s for aggressor training.
