Roger Bailey I have a manual Cayman GTS (my second) and my GF a PDK 991.2 Carrera S. Such different cars to drive and it’s amazing to have the choice, but the chassis and gearbox in the GTS, make it so much more fun to drive. Even if the 911’s envelope of performance is overall wider, it’s so imperious as to be dull sometimes at normal fun road speeds. So I agree with you! The baby Porsche chassis, is the more entertaining (in all it’s many guises) 😀
@tommy516
@tommy516 4 года назад
If you have a child and they are not old enough to ride in the front, then the 911 is the only way to go. I would also say, with the current version of the 911, you can drive it MUCH faster than the 718, where as I think the 718 use to be easier to go faster than the 991.2. Now, I do not own not have I driven the GT4 or Spyder, I do own a 718 Cayman GTS, manual and a 992 C2S with RWS and I feel like I am at least 10mph faster in it over the 718, I also prefer the driving position in the 911 over the 718 but it is a great and fun car to drive!
@DontPanicDear
@DontPanicDear 4 года назад
Tommy Yes the 992 is another big 911 step forwards! On a track, the 991.2 still smashes the Cayman for speed! I just love the 718 as it feels so much lighter and the weight is spread out better. When it does start to move, it is as if it’s one piece. With any 911, you are always managing either the front / rear. A challenge for sure, but suicidally fast for the road to the that 992 chassis ‘mobile’ Agreed re the kids though. Just put a Labrador in the back of ours 😀

You’re right about the softer suspension on the 981 Spyder had: it was equipped with the PASM Sport Suspension from Boxster GTS not the GT4 suspension. The 982 Spyder here has the complete suspension from the GT4 including the reverse struts and rose-joints.

@gsten2116 4 года назад
pasm was an option. It also came with x71 suspension from the gts.
@Dathumm

Wrong, there was no PASM available for the 981 Spyder. It basically has the same suspension as the GTS but slightly modified. It is no GT suspension but still thrilling to drive and a but more engaging than the 718 Spyder suspension.

Богдан Кондратов Oops! 🤡 It’s exactly the opposite to that that you’ve stated! His double de-clutch gear changes, create a greater weight shift and more unnaturally punctuated drive. The synchromesh is there, among other things, to cure the above issue of duration out of gear 🧐 Throttle control immediately preceding a de-clutch, then before re-application is how to control weight transfer. This is made easier and more fluid, if the elapsed time is SHORTER not longer! Also a BIG point, is that we need to be covering less distance in neutral. This is a technique only broken vehicles require, or vehicles from before this fella was even driving. I live in the UK and have only ever owned manual cars for my 30years of driving. On road, track and in advanced driving tuition. Nobody with a clue thinks this is a good idea!

I was in this same predicament. Had a deposit on a GT4 but for the money ($100k+) I could have a Carrera instead. So instead of spending $114k as specced on a GT4, I went for a $118k sticker Carrera T for 30% off sticker. I haven't looked back since. I'm sure the GT4 is great, but it's not $20k+ better than a slightly used 991.2.
@thedudeabides1443
@thedudeabides1443 3 года назад
They are totally different cars in terms of handling, feel-everything. The GT4 mid engine design is perhaps the best handling car, very flat around corners and nimble-it’s like the 911 used to be. Today’s 911s are more like grand touring cars-heavier and less nimble with less capable handling than the GT4. After all, you can’t cheat physics! Just depends on what type of driving experience you want.

If hardo 911 geeks were being honest with themselves, they would say that the 718 is the purest driving machine Porsche currently manufacturers, and the ‘20 Cayman GT4 is one of the greatest driver’s cars they’ve ever produced.

Motoman, I started DROOLING the minute the email hit my in box. I've got this spec'd up to $128k. That's right. And to that I plan on adding an aftermarket exhaust, $5k and $10k worth of carbon fiber interior and exterior bits from Techart. All tastefully added. Color, chalk! Red roof, and red and black interior with 18 way sport seats. No PCCB, or buckets. But pretty much every other conceivable option, excluding car play. Hate it. Could I get an entry level 992, sure. Why would I?? A fully spec'd 992 Targa 4S is over $200k. And this is a real GT car. And a convertible. Plan on driving this for four or five years, putting like 20k miles on it and parking it for a few decades to appreciate. Can't wait to place my order for a 2021 in October. Dealer has my name on his list already.

I replaced my 991.2 for the 718 Spyder, no regrets what-so-ever, just unplug the exhaust valves and you will hear the engine all the time, not just from 4000+ rpm, gearing is just fine for everyday use in traffic, who wants to constantly upshift to 3rd gear while traveling 25-30mph in the city, those people that complains about it either don't have one or a RU-vidr driving only on the highways.

2:10 nice double clutch catching the right RPM after a blip for the gears that are slower to move the shifter to. In most Porsche 6 speeds, it seems like 5th especially is spaced too close to 4th ratio wise (and without being in the middle of the H pattern spacial wise) to get into the gear before the RPMs drop too much (when you're not revving much past 4krpm before upshifting). I'll have to see if that makes 4-5 upshifts at normal driving RPMs less rushed for me. The Aisin synchros are also consistent enough where you can remember how much force needs to be applied to have the shifter complete its movement right when the RPMs are matched.

Porsche really shot themselves in the foot going the Henry Ford way with the Spyder/GT4 interiors. It hurts to say it, but Porsche's interiors look stale in black ... Thank God for TechArt. Can you imagine a Spyder in Miami Blue with matching seatbelts & stitches, stain platinum wheels, a caramel interior & yellow gauges? Mmmmm .... As to your question, M, I'd have a GT4, send it to TechArt to get the specs I mentioned above and give it the "Touring" treatment. As much as I like the Spyder, its not really suitable for our climate as a daily driver, having the top up 90% of the time takes away from the coolness of it. As always, excellent work, M.

All these GT4 and Spyder videos keep making me think I need to get rid of my Cayman 718 GTS for one of these..........but, I live in the mountains and I have a feeling that going from the FI GTS to an NA will make the car feel very slow at altitude. Now, having the top down as I go through the canyons with that NA engine sound, that is a different story.

One follow up questions. If you could have this with a PDK, BUT with the shifter that's in a 992 GT3, would you still do the manual vs. the PDK. Please. I'd really, REALLY like your thoughts. TIA.

Feel like this car would've been better had Porsche bore the 3.0 out to 3.6 instead of a 4.0 and raise the redline to 8500+ to keep the same HP rating. They can sacrifice some of the top speed and get the same acceleration time with a taller final drive ratio in the transmission. This will make the car sing even more, stays longer up high in the rev range.

If I'm buying a 911, it's got to be a Non-turbo. 991.1 perhaps, though I have a suspicion that'd I'd prefer how the 997 drives (but the 991 is so much better looking inside and out). But up against a 992? This. All the way. Which is funny because I'm not even slightly interested in the 4 Cyl 718. I'd rather have a 968 or 944S than a 718 with a 4 cylinder.

High Speed Closer Богдан Кондратов He’s being stupid and thinks this makes him seem all OG! His double de-clutch gear changes, create a greater weight shift and more unnaturally punctuated drive. The synchromesh is there specifically to cure the above 🧐 Throttle control immediately preceding a de-clutch, then before re-application is how to control weight transfer. This is made easier and more fluid, if the elapsed time is SHORTER not longer! Also a BIG point, is that we need to be covering less distance in neutral. This is a technique only broken vehicles require, or vehicles from before this fella was even driving. I live in the UK and have only ever driven manual cars. On road, track and in advanced driving tuition. Nobody with a clue thinks this is a good idea!

@skynetsworld
@skynetsworld 3 года назад
Actually you don't. Then they wear out quickly, because the heat destroys the carbon material. That is why a lot of GT3(RS) ppl who want to track their cars are retrofitting them with steeldisks. On the road however the ceramic brakes can last up to a few 100k miles. There those won't get really hot.

You will be waiting a very long time for the roof as this will never come with the Spyder. The roof is easy when you’ve done it a couple of times, and to me, it’s part of what makes the car so special.

Why do you change gear in 2 movements? It lets the rev's fall each time and will just be jerky. Also it's so slow that I don't think it will work with the rev matching which expects a quicker shift. I have a GT3 and it likes nice quick shifts.
