PAPER SUMMARY
Nearly half a decade has passed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019, but the origin of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has remained murky. One hypothesis is that the pandemic was triggered by a zoonotic spillover from live mammals, including raccoon dogs, being sold at a wholesale market in Wuhan, China. An alternative hypothesis is that the pandemic was triggered by an accidental leak at a laboratory in Wuhan where extensive research on bat-related viruses was being conducted at a relatively low biosafety level. This paper utilizes Bayesian methods to evaluate the odds of these two hypotheses using publicly available data. The analysis proceeds by considering the specification of prior odds and then decomposing the Bayes factor into four components related to the outbreak's location and the spatiotemporal patterns of early cases in Wuhan and at the wholesale market. Preliminary results were presented at the July 24 workshop. The complete paper will be issued in the Hoover Economics Working Paper series over coming weeks.

How do you assume that all excess deaths during a pandemic were caused by the virus. Weren’t some deaths caused by the response to the virus, like people who didn’t get treatment for other diseases, or people who committed suicide because of the isolation?

As a recently retired hospital nurse it has always amazed me how cramped and poorly ventilated and designed toilets have been mostly left out of the transmission discussion. Regardless of the venue, it usually has a toilet which people share.

What about swedish researchers finding a gene segment in covid which had been previously PATENTED????? That was spring of 2021. I read a medical article on it from a medical publication. Did this group ever bring that up?

This is a very clear analysis of what actually happened in Whuhan. Of course, those who backed the zoonotic source of the virus will find it hard to change their opinion now. I don't remember them describing the presence of multiple labs in Wuhan, The argument was always that the main lab was too far from the market to be the source. The presence of the other labs makes all the difference to my mind.

Once set the wrong paradigm you can paddle all you want in marmite with all the fancy words you want, your results will be wrong: Aristotle 101.

"Can SARS Cov-2 Jump from Bats to Humans?" That is the title of the unethical research done by Baric and Zhu. The market is the cover story AFTER we made it in a lab. I read the paper in March 2020. Scrubbed and erased by late April. WE DID THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The other inceedible thing is how quickly and strongly the lab theory got dismissed. People were villified and fired for daring to say that its a lab leak. At the very least people need to recognize that there are two theories that both have factual bases. Theres a lot we know, there's a lot we don't know. There's also stuff we'll never know, and the stuff that's kind of unknowable definitely.

Diet, age and income levels of the lab workers versus the local population, along with contact tracing would have been interesting. People with family or other social networks likely would present with varying transmission patterns.

Making his case, but then the market supporters also make their case. Working to a conclusion is ok only if it isn't a predetermined one.

Just reading the title I already know this is going to be the biggest pile of crock humanity has ever witnessed, and if not, it's up there. Edit: but I will listen to it, because I am curious about new word soup recipes, I will change my mind if I am wrong.
