The first time I watched this, they did such a good job with this movie, that I still wasn’t sure Nash had schizophrenia even after this scene. Obviously I had no knowledge of the real John Nash.
Well...what I like is, it isn't really an "accurate" accurate depiction of schizophrenia, because that usually has auditory hallucinations, not visual hallucinations. But you're convinced they're real - it's apparently hard to verbalize this. But Nash himself, who was alive when they made this movie, fully supported that they depicted his hallucinations with actors in the visual media of cinema, because it emphasized that the hallucinations were "real" TO HIM. That he could not distinguish them from reality. So it doesn't get the "letter" of "accuracy" but the SPIRIT of "accuracy". Still powerful stuff.
My Father was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. I remember watching this scene specifically and thinking "for goodness sake give the guy a break... he's under so much pressure with his wor... OHHHHHH I get it now..." It gave me more insight into just how real the delusions can seem.
look at the time period we were in conflict with Russia and he’s a math genius. Someone that intelligent would know if they had the disorder based on sheer Iq and reasoning.
A couple months after being released from a psych ward with a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia when I was 16 I changed schools, the new school's English class was showing this film as the main study for our exams. Safe to say that did not do me any favours.
Oh Chris my heart goes out to you. Mental illness is such a difficult thing for not only the person suffering from it but for the family as well. Even in these enlightened days it is still very misunderstood and stigmatised. My mother has lived with schizophrenia all her adult life . She is almost 90 now and her life has been hell, as has the families life is dealing with it. My own son has schizoaffective disorder , a combination of schizophrenia and bipolar , and almost died whilst being paranoid. It is a tragic loss that you lost your precious son but there is no magic cure unfortunately and most sufferers do not take medication because of the side effects. It it a no win situation. To find a medication that suits the individual can take many months, a case or trial and error. And even then very few will comply, they either do not accept they have a mental illness or the many side effects of medication are deemed not worth the help in stopping psychotic symptoms. My heart goes out to anyone suffering with mental illness and give my love to family members trying to cope also. 💕💕
She looked so different in 92 thick and full she lost a lot a weight in the late 90s but GD she is the most gorgeous woman ever to love this earth besides my wife 😛
@@SelectiveApathy82 The proof is a 60 Minutes interview with Dr Nash and his wife Alicia. Alicia said his symptoms kicked in within weeks of starting working at the RAND Institute to uncover enemy conspiracies. Requiring a schizophrenic to work on conspiracies is like requiring an alcoholic to drink.
In the movie you can see him help them once in the beggining. After that the delusions start. You have to watch this movie two times to really get it imo
I once thoght that way too, that I had a friend in college , named Bryan before he went to the Army, #sadface but at the same time, no one on the campus Knew he existed, save 1 person, but NO ONE liked him. so am I slight schizophrenic?
@@Mopehome Just because you were friends with someone not a lot of people knew doesn't mean you have schizophrenia. That said, if you're really not sure he existed at all, maybe get tested for schizophrenia.
Looking back on the movie there were signs regarding Charles not being real, the most obvious was that he never interacted with anyone else apart from John.
Interesting. I think he was recruited, and I also think they ran tests on him like that mk ultra thing. He seemed to know quite a lot on the subject of the code thing. He mentioned invisible cloaks, which isn't far-fetched at all, to be honest. I also think those around him were in on it too.
When the doctor said “ now the only way I can help him is to show him the difference between what’s real and what is in his mind “ this makes me realize that the people who live with this disorder it’s very difficult to them and in some rare cases where doctors don’t believe the person has it they don’t get the treatment they deserve and my heart goes out to them I really hope whoever suffers from this disorder really sees a doctor that could help them distinguish what’s real and what’s not even if it has to be from the start to the beginning of things please stay strong you are loved and these things you see and hear remember that you have to fight them don’t be scared Ik it’s hard but don’t be after all we all love you and we all will protect you from the things you see and hear we all got your back ❤
@@partsparis Yeah. There's a scene where a nurse phones for the doctor to come and when they enter the room John's arm is covered in blood and he says that he can't find the chip.
It's interesting that they made it seem like it all could have been a cover up for a while.. alot of mathematicians helped out in the war efforts, so the idea of him working as a external consult, or even got some kind of temporary employment isn't so far fetched. Also damn that woman looks good. When the movie came out I though she was a bit old since I was 15 at the time. But now she is mature in a good way.
He did, and this is kinda the point. this whole cover things made his schizofrenia way worse, as he wasn't able to talk to anyone making the line between realitly and fiction pretty much non existent.
This scene is the most intricate in the movie, because it portrays Dr. Rosen as if he’s selectively feigning ignorance of the details about Nash’s academic background and it shows Alicia in persistent disbelief and overlooking the fact that she never encountered Charles. The whole time, Dr. Rosen’s questions were legitimate and Alicia was defending John, unwitting of all the false details she learned from him.
I find it interesting how many times you have to rebuy the same copyrighted digital media content. I stopped buying movies and music when it all went 100% online digital. All it takes for you to lose all your purchased media is a hard drive to crash, an account to get locked out, or a software bug or feature to block you from your files. Why would you put $100s or $1,000s of dollars into digital media that may or may not work with other platforms, technologies, or simply be blocked and charged more later by the distributor?
So your saying buying physical is safer?Digital can be redwonloaded to any device if lost in most cases. Physical has every problem you just mentioned. If i buy a movie on youtube that movie is on my account forever. If i buy a disk and snap it in half ive to buy another one . I could literally use your phone to watch the movie i bought through my account. And that is a one time payment
The overwhelming feeling, or at least on the inside, is the desire to see reality and let go of what's in the mind. But the mind has so many potentials, coming to reality boxes many of those potentials. Perhaps the problem is not reality, perhaps the problem is the box in reality.
Could you imagine how soul crushing it would be to find out literally your whole life, your whole purpose you thought you had, was all in your head. And for his wife, to find that out too after him being so convincing about it.
This movie was weird for me to watch because after I woke up from a month long coma I also hallucinsted the existence of a few people before I finally realized they were fake
One of the most frightening disabilities I studied in Psychology in college. Jesus Christ, a lifetime of being tormented by your own brain, in some instances.
The funny I heard was nash found some microphones in his stuff. He invented new device and put the microphone it into his invention that he found circuitry and all.
The thing that I struggled with watching the film was how and when this chaotic schizophrenic gifted mathematician had the time or discipline to work out. Surely building the physique we see in the man in the film takes time and patience and organisation which did not seem in keeping with the personality being portrayed.
