A Beautiful Tale. - When Marnie Was There Movie Reaction (Studio Ghibli) 

Thank You! This movie gets looked over so much by people. It's one of my favourites. Mostly because it keeps the spirit of the novel, which is an English tale.

I can’t believe you just reacted to my favorite anime and studio Ghibli movie! I relate myself to Anna so much, i have cystic fibrosis (a genetic illness that affects my lungs and digestive system) so I know what’s it’s like to have a asthma attack, I was pretty much a loner in school and read, draw and write. I was bullied in school as well, mostly because of having to be in hospital all the time and for what I liked (anime, kingdom hearts and for reading) Great reaction and have a great Xmas! I recommend wolf children which is a beautiful anime about a young mother raising half human half wolf children. It’s a beautiful story. But thank you for reacting to my favorite studio Ghibli anime!

When I was younger, I was sent to a hospital due to my anger episodes and violent outbursts. I've always been a shy person, moreso when I was a kid. But at that hospital, I made so many friends. Kids my age and teens who were older than me and treated me like I was a part of their club which made me feel special. This film connected with me because the main character is introverted and opens up in a new environment where she feels like she belongs in a crowd rather than outside.

My dad cried when watching the movie with him, it’s now banned in our house because it hurts him too much to see it

I love this anime, and such a plot twist. I totally agree with you, that all people should spend time in the countryside, i remember when i was small and a teen and stayed at my grandparent's house every summer also in my cousin's grandparents' house. I like to spend time with animals, to run barefoot in the yard, to go by the river, lake... all that fresh air... and now during summer i want to leave city and spend more time in the countryside.

Thank you for reacting to this movie, so much so that not a many people react to this movie so often. It was one of my favorite Studio Ghibli movies and also was one of those few movies which tend to get more melancholic and painful after a few rewatch. Especially, after the backstory sequence told by Hisako (the painter lady in the end of the movie) makes this movie more painful, so much so that on my third rewatch, I weeped at the end. In my opinion, it was one of the best movies ever produced by Studio Ghibli, apart from From Up On Poppy Hill and Whisper Of The Heart. But, it is really unfortunate to see this movie losing the Best Animation Film award at the 88th OSCARS, 2016. Furthermore, the ending song of this movie (Fine On The Outside by Priscilla Ahn) been one of my favourite songs of all time, ever since I've watched this movie.

I love this film! Marnie was a real ghost, that's why she said to keep it a secret 31:34 so no one would think Anna was crazy for seeing someone who was dead. The reason Marnie came back is because Anna needed her, as Anna says "I miss you. I called for you, and in my heart I shouted." 53:59 . Anna had a lot of anger in her because she felt that everyone left her, but in the end she forgave them and let go of her pain 1:05:37

If you annoy introverted people, then we will finally explode and say what we mean (like calling someone fat pig). Thank you for reacting to one of the best movies ever made :)

lol i love how suzy is all “is she gay?” and then later on completely talks over and probably misses hearing Marnie tell Anna “I love you so much, more than any girl I’ve ever known”

I couldn't help but let out a happy sigh when I saw this thumbnail! This movie is so beautiful yet underrated, and very few have reacted to it. So excited for this reaction! Also, take a shot every time Anna either passes out or gets her shoes wet

I guess some people don't know what it's like to have low esteem and be socially awkward when you are young. I was just like Anna and I would reject any genture by anyone who'd triy to be friendly/nice to me. I just found it so fake and somewhat condescending. It is irrational, yes, but that scene where Anna calls Nobuko a fat pig was so real to me it made me cry.

I hope you guys can react 《The Cat Returns》made by Studio Ghibli in 2002. It is a beautiful and lovely pet movie.

Ahhh, you had the movie so early on at 34:14 by noting the physical resemblance between Anna and Marnie, and then you lost it again 😅 Thanks for another Ghibli reaction - this one was never a favourite on first watching, but it's growing on me with time and possibly age (another one, Only Yesterday, in particular I think you can't truly appreciate until you're at least 27 or so - the age of the protagonist). Looking forward to the final one tomorrow - Merry Christmas to yous both!

When Marnie Was There is one of my favorite Ghibli movies! It's so underrated! It was on Hayao Miyazaki's list of books he considered making into films or something like that. He retired before this movie came out, but I think he's been in and out of retirement since then. I read the book, which was much better than this movie. As Suzy mentioned, a lot of things were cut out, and a lot of things were changed. Now I want to reread the book!

I'd highly recommend the novel that this movie is based on. Gets deeper into the story than the Studio Ghibli adaptation.

I hope you guys get to Whisper of the Heart. It’s my personal favourite.

Gotta say, they are not killing it with these dubs, just finding big name actors but they don't match the characters at all. If you have a chance I'd recommend watching the original Japanese ones :)

Just in case nobody explained it to you the scene at 27:47, here it is: When Anna lost the last of her family, people felt sorry for her, but nobody really wanted to step up and take her in.

I have a theory! Since we never saw Marnie as a teenager here is my take! Marnie's parents finally fired Ursula, Ella and Georgina for abusing Marnie when they're not around. Despite this, Marnie snapped at them, swore at them and blamed them for her parents negligence when really the traveling itself made significant income to afford their lavish lifestyle in the lap of luxury. They hired new maids after she no longer needed a nanny. Thankfully they were kind and they took her in like they were related to Marnie herself, but that wasn't enough. She had a rebel phase consisting of either stealing wine from her parents liquor cabinet, lying to the new maids, or ditched curfew to be out with her friends or Kazuhiko, which made them assume they were having sex when that wasn't the case. One night, Marnie was so wasted she showed up to Kazuhiko's house. She pressured him to have sex with her. Thankfully, he refused. Marnie made a horrible impression on his parents throwing up on them. They were angry and forbade him from seeing her, that they called Marnie's parents. They showed up and before they could ground her, Kazuhiko explained why Marnie was doing what she was doing, and promised her parents and his parents that they won't have sex until after marriage. They moved to Sapporo, Japan and had a baby girl named Emily. After Kazuhiko died from Stage 4 cancer, his parents blamed her for his death and that's why they didn't bother to take in Emily and that's also why Marnie may have lied to Emily about having family on his side, and also in boarding school, Kazuhiko's sibling's daughters were the ones bullying Emily, which meant they were cousins. Emily found out the truth eventually and she swore at Marnie too as she blamed her for abandoning her and upset at her for spending 13 birthdays without her mom.
