Since we have done some general videos on dragon care, yet it seems that many new keepers are still somewhat confused and/or overwhelmed when it comes to what lights bearded dragons need. Heat lights, heat lamps, basking lights, UVA, UVB, red lights, black lights, heat emmiters, tube style lights,?
HELP!!! Somebody just tell me what I need!!!
You got it. In this video we break down the two main lights that you dragon needs, and the choices that you have for such lights. Hope this video will "shed some light" on your beardie lighting questions.

Can the basking light be put on the front of a aquarium laying on its side, (aquarium is laying on its side as owner is short and can't get to the bottom if used right side up).

So if a UBV lamp lights up an entire enclosure then I don't need to install additional regular lights? Just a UVB + heat lamp?

I plan to make an enclosure out of an old dresser for a bearded dragon that will be 65 in long, 28 in tall, and 20 in deep. I need to know what type of lighting setup would be best for an enclosure this size. It will be kept in a basement apartment that stays cooler than the rest of the house. In winter it never drops below 60 to my knowledge...I like to sleep with it cooler. Once I have the enclosure built I will get a bearded dragon. I am doing tons of research now. Any suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the videos! It has been about 30 years since I owned a reptile ( I was a young kid then) I recently rescued a 2 year old Dragon who's owner left her (Freya) with his mother and left state. I said yes without thinking, or preparing for the care (first mistake). Was told everything was included to care for it (2nd mistake believing that). Anyway, your videos were/are great and within a couple days Freya was basking healthy and happy in her upsized, humidity/temp controlled environment. Veggies in the morning and insect treats in the afternoon. We (myself, and our kids) whom we are trying to teach the joy of responsible animal ownership to, seriously are in your debt. Freya is probably the most appreciative as she seems to be happy, healthy, and enjoying being handled without the skeptical look she gave us the first two days. Again, Thank you!! And we will continue to follow you guys, and your videos!!!!!

Hello! I'm a bit confused about the need for daytime and nighttime heating bulbs when using the ceramic heater. Couldn't the ceramic bulb be the day and night heat? I got my first dragon (and reptile 😱) yesterday, and I'm looking to upgrade the gear he came with. I got a tube uvb bulb, and was thinking I just needed the ceramic bulb for heat day and night.

That was very helpful. I’m in the Northeast, so it gets really cold. We also don’t keep our heat above 65 to save $. I need to use a heat source 24 hours a day. Glad to know I can just get a ceramic heat bulb instead of the red light. I’ve always felt the red lights still seemed too bright.

I got a beardie about 4 months ago someone was rehoming. She’s about 20in maybe a little more, and pretty large. She eats veggie in the day and super worms usually at night. She came with a basking light, uv light, hammock backing tunnel rock and a carpet flooring. She was in a glass 40 gallon but I recently bought her the ecoflex 51 gallon tank. She seem fine mostly never really shows weird behavior unless the ceiling fan is on ( the bird effect) I believe. I spray her with water, make sure we spend time with her but sometime I worry she’s missing something or needing something more???!?!? She was already family oriented with other animals and kids. Do beardies get sad? Should she be allowed to roam? She’s very chill, cool and calm but is there anything you could chime in on? Should I be doing more? I’m in Texas and our weather is up and down so at night I do turn a heater on in the room just to help keep it dropping to low. I also have her own schedule so her basking lamp goes off at about 9pm and back on at about 9am. Should she be put in a more social place in the house? So many question, sorry to over load just trying to do right by beardie!

My female dragon loves watching Aquarium videos on youtube, and my male loves watching out the window (he's in a glass tank). They do need enrichment.
@Mimi1966
@Mimi1966 Год назад
Why are you misting your dragon? You can cause upper respiratory infections in dragons that stay wet; that's why when they get baths you dry them really well and you keep their cage at a certain humidity that's low. There's no reason to mist your baby. Spray his or her salad every day with water so he or her gets their hydration; don't have it standing in water just a gentle mist. You can drop water on the tip of their nose with a dropper if you are worried about them drinking water and they will drink that way.

My 6th grade students did research and wrote a bearded dragon manual to convince our administrators to allow us to buy one for a class pet. Thank you so very very much! There has been nothing but confusion, conflicting information, ridiculous amounts of $$ spent on the wrong things till I was about ready to just give up. The setup was given to me as a surprise Birthday gift from my kids (they have had several dragons) along with a gift certificate to choose a dragon from their favorite rescue. They knew I had wanted a dragon of my own for a long time so it was a thrill to receive this loving gift. They live in Montana. I live in soggy, cold Western Oregon. They have indoor ducted heat - I have a wood stove. With the information in this amazing video I went shopping yesterday and today my dragon has the right heat, the right UVB-UVA light, and is prepared to have a nice warmish dark night. Bless you for this straightforward, easily comprehensible video - you probably saved a LOT of scaly little lives when you made this gift for us!

Coil UVB lights have proven to be inefficient for the penetration depth needed by a bearded dragon due to the wavelength of UV light the bulb produces... Basically your dragon would need to be sitting a few inches beneath it to receive any benefit from it
@ColdBloodCreations
@ColdBloodCreations 2 года назад
This is a very good comment, and thank you for submitting it. It is true when using cheaply made UVB lights (like some available on Amazon. There is one popular brand that caused some health issues in dragons about a decade ago too. However, that is why we did not recommend that brand. A good brand of lighting (such as the one we use in the video) when placed directly above the basking site is going to be fine. BUT! We still recommend that a bearded dragon be taken outside during warm weather to enjoy the perks of NATURAL SUNLIGHT, as it is better than ANY BRAND of artificial lighting that we have ever heard of.

I understand the need to have UVB and the idea of UVB being available across the length of the vivarium, but I have also seen that the BD needs to have a place to escape UVB lighting during the day, hence the use of the dome fixture. The FB page I am on is adamant that the linear pole light be used as the BD does not benefit from the dome type. Also, I use the moonlight bulb to provide heat to the vivarium at night. Is that moonlight bulb ok, or should a ceramic bulb be used if I am looking to maintain heat rather than provide any light? Thanks so much!

Try to place them as close together as possible, a mistake almost all beginners make (including myself) is making a basking spot and uvb spot on the opposite sides of the tank which is no bueno! Dragons don’t want to pick and choose whether they want uvb or heat so always have them as close together as possible

My question is can we change the day/night cycle for our new bearded dragon. My spouse and I have recently been assigned different shifts at work. So ideally, leaving the basking light on at night works for us (it serves as my source of light while he sleeps) and turning it off and leaving the UV on as a source of heat. I’m worried if this is unhealthy for our little guy to switch his day/night cycle? Years ago, I had a ball python which I made some similar mistakes with heat/light source. It made him quite aggressive. I do not want to make mistakes with our new little “King Lizzie”

@dylanhernandez3980
@dylanhernandez3980 3 месяца назад
Don’t worry!!! They open their mouths as a way of thermoregulating pretty much their version of sweating! It’s a normal process however I think that a 150 watt basking bulb might be too hot because the basking bulb should be between 105-110 degrees Fahrenheit and I get that perfectly with a 100 watt im worried that the 150 may be way too hot. If you have a thermometer or temperature gun you can check the basking spot to make sure that the correct temperature needs are met!

I use a 'Evergreen' Mercury vapor bulb that emits both UVA & UVB light and a good amount of heat for basking. Temps are in the 90's in the basking spot and 80's on the opposite end of dragon's tank. (I also use a temperature gun to shoot temps). Are there any disadvantages with this type of bulb? Great video team! keep 'em coming.
@ColdBloodCreations
@ColdBloodCreations 2 года назад
Ultraviolet radiation burns from high intensity mercury vapor light bulbs are a public health concern, so I tend to avoid them. If the mercury bulbs are not used correctly, then there is a risk that they will explode, releasing mercury vapour into the room. There was a school in our area that banned their use in the school district, so I have always been weary of them. Also a zoo that I once worked at would not use them either.

Hi! I was told by ppl in a dragon Facebook group that if I didn't get the long UVB light and a 40 gallon tank that he would get MBD very quickly. Is this true. He isn't in a 40 gallon at the moment. He's in a 10 gallon (he's a baby. Like 1 month old) so he's tiny. But he will be getting a 40 gallon soon.

Thank you I know this is a year old but I'm trying to get a bearded dragon and everywhere online makes it so confusing for lighting. I've read I need 3 lights not including the night one which I would only need for winter. Thank you foe making it less complicated

Question: I open my bearded dragons enclosure and let him come an go during the day as I work from home. Sometimes he goes off and lays under the couch or under a door into a closet. I usually go get him and bring him back to the UVB/basking after a half an hour but he keeps taking off. If I lock him in he glass surfs and get agitated. I saw 8-12 hours of UVB in needed. Should I just lock him in the enclosure? Thanks.

I did research on bearded dragons and you dont needk a nightime lighting especially since in autralia nigh time gets to 40f° in my opinion its juts a waste of money now if you live in a place that snows as long as your home is above that you should be fine.

Awesome video, very informative. I just rescued a dragon and his tank is about 6ft long and 1 1/2ft wide. I have a UVB and UVA bulbs that I use for his lighting and basking. Also a ceramic heater for night, I live in Wyoming so it gets very cold. I'm having trouble deciding how to modify his habitat for his best comfort.

Is it ok if I have the temp right at 95 degrees
@ColdBloodCreations
@ColdBloodCreations 14 дней назад
For basking, yeah. Air temp, no. That is too hot for the median temp away from the basking area imho...

I got my bearded dragon about 3 months ago just to find out yesterday that she needs a wayyyy bigger tank given she’s fully grown. I was thinking about getting a 120 gal. tank, would a 150 watt heat light be too much heat for her?

I got a bulb that on the box said “ uvb and basking light” should I trust this to give my dragon the proper uvb lighting he needs ? I didn’t know any thing going in to this and I got a dragon that’s was being given away from a breeder. He was the smallest of the batch and he was hurt by the other ones resulting in him losing his back left for and most of his tail and multiple fingers on his other hands. I love him so much but I didn’t know about keeping bearded dragons and I didn’t have a uvb bulb and I fed him too much and his back legs became paralyzed but it’s been a few months since I got the bulb thst has the uvb and basking” so the box says” but I’m just worried that his legs won’t work again and I feel so bad for what I did to him but he’s still alive and eating but is there anyway he could use his back legs again?

Hey I had a question, so my setup came with a a “naturalistic terrarium hood”, it looks like the hood you had for the longer UVB light just much shorter. Can I use that so I can have a spot for a basking bulb and ceramic heater in my dual fixture? And if the short hood is okay to use, where should I put it? Right now it’s kind of in the middle/ on the cool side

hello, thanks a lot for your video. It was the more detailed video about lightning and heat that I found. I just need to ask for some advice (I'm new to bearded dragon breeding). I have a 75x40x40 PCV terrarium with the lights putted inside, but at the moment it only has the UVB on during the day (the ceramic is off because at night is 28ºC). I don't even have UVA because they didn't tell me, and the dragon is 3 months old. What is the safe distance to have the lightning UVB & UVA putted at safe distance from him so he can't burn? Best regards and thanks for the help if possible

I’d love to hear your thoughts on the Arcadia ThermalZooPro. It’s a bit costly in the USA right now but would still appreciate any feedback on it.

Has anyone had they basking lights smell fishy?Is this normal? Because normally if electric has a fishing smell something is wrong with it.

I have the bulbs that come in a 40g tank could you recommend some good thermometers/hydrometer. Mine are set in 4 different places and I'm not sure how accurate they are. It's a small bearded dragon no more then 5.5inchs long

Curious to know, i have a couple plastic perches, that stand up pretty tall, close to the top of the terrarium, can i still leave the lights sitting right on top, or do i have to keep the lights a certain distance away? I know the closer they are the more beneficial it is for them, but i just dont want it getting too hot in there

I live in the northeast and I have the double dome with the basking light and CHE and then a tube UVB. I think i may have to upgrade to 150 watt for the basking though. The CHE stays on all night.
