I have a solarmeter r65, best investment ever. Puff has a zen, with testing, we realized it was getting a bit weaker on top the zen, so I used zip ties to hang it inside and very to add more, we could go down two more inches I believe, have to measure again. Peaches uvb is on top and is getting weaker so she is due a new one, that or add a inch of substrate under her basking log. My anole uses peaches old bulbs as they are the same size. The highest branch give a 5 reading and she has layers under to regulate, same for under the basking. When she is heat she heads for the center, no basking happening, just the uvb. Sorry! If you have multi reptiles always check to see if another one can use the bulbs.

This is a great video. I’m currently upgrading my lighting for my blue tongue skink so this was very informative.

For me a Solarmeter 6.5 as as important as a themrometer or a hygrometer. With a little less UVB the animals may stay healthy but especially with to much UVB you can make the blind pretty easy or give the UV burnings... We had a bulb planned for our L. lugubris. 10cm over the enclosure we measured with a 8W bulb a UVI of 25 whats way to much. And since L. lugibris will climb it could have ended really bad. I would also recommand metal halid lamps like those from Reptile Experts or Solar Raptor for higher enclosures bacause you´ll get a higher UVI in the distance.

Honestly a solarmeter is one of the most important tools in my kit

Can someone help; my bearded dragon has a Arcadia pro 24Wt T5 14% fluorescent UVB and I have noticed that my bearded has these head jitters/ spasms (not head bobbing) it looks like shakey hands but for my beardies head. I don’t know why it does this but he doesn’t do it all the time but I usually see him do this right after he stops walking or when I take him out of his enclosure. I have read that it might be a problem with UVB or an early sign of MBD but I thought I had a really good UVB source for my beardie and my beardie appears healthy, no deformations and isn’t super skinny.

So the UVB lets them make vitamin D, and the vitamin D allows them to absorb calcium from the gut. But the process only starts in the skin if the skin gets hot enough. Make sure your dragon is getting hot enough. If you take a temp gun and measure the dragons back whilst basking and its hitting 104 then thats great, if not and is much lower, up the wattage of the bulb. The calcium has to come from the food they eat, so make sure you are using calcium on the bugs as well as multivitamins (check out our suppliment guide). Also they need twice as much calcium as phosphorus in their diet. Bugs have no calcium and are full of phosphorus so if you overfeed you make their calcium needs skyrocket that might exceed what they are getting even if you are using powders. I am not a vet, but deffo consult one.

That sounds neurological. Exactly what my boy started doing before he died from Adenovirus. How are they doing now?

Hi I'm glad I came across you videos as a new owner, there was alot of great information. So I bought a 6' x 18" depth 2' high , and I noticed there's a 36" long Arcadia light. Would that be better for the 6 foot cage instead of the 24" that's recommended for and 120 gal tank, and would the light on top be to close only being 2 feet tall. Ty for your time. Any help in appreciated.

The 36 would be fine. Up to half of the enclosure being covered is fine. On it being better than a 24 inch depends. In terms of how much UV is provided, if the percentage is not different that its much just about the enclosure being brighter if you dont have any leds etc. You would want a 14% at 2 feet away

I did plan on getting a led also. Would that still be fine with a 14% ?

Is a solar meter the same as a power meter? In one video you recommended a power meter and in this one you recommend a solar meter.

UVB % has nothing to do with intensity.
