Thank you for spotlighting a much forgotten and misaligned director and animator to those who just forgot about him. Cheers!

Such a shame there aren’t many modern rereleases of Trnka’s work. I’d kill for some of these on Blu-ray, let alone 4K

the czech national film archive sometimes makes remasters, those seem however to mainly be accessible for licensing to institutions

Have you heard of "Sandmännchen," a German television show for children that started in 1959 till 1989? Jiří Trnka's stop motion puppets reminded of the "Sandmännchen." During the division of Germany into East and West both had their respective East and West Sandmännchen, which was geared towards the predominant political and economical culture of the two territories. Besides that the Sandmännchen was a nice TV bedtime show. I had included a link to IMDb in the comment I wrote before this one, but it got deleted or recognized as spam by RU-vid. But you can find images and videos on the internet. Cheers!

I adore Trnka’s work. I got to see a number of his films in theaters 6 years ago or so and immediately fell in love. The Cybernetic Grandma in particular blew my mind with its aesthetic and tone. It very much reminds me of another of my favorite films, Red Desert by Antonioni. Just a brilliant filmmaker.

Though I've had exposure to Trnka, many titles here were new to me, and I didn't realize he had made cel animation as well. His films are full of charm, and adumbrate how animation at its best is meant for audiences of all ages, and is not exclusive to children's entertainment. Eastern Europe as a whole has such a rich heritage of animation. Some other countries that would be deservedly profiled could include Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria.

I have a mixed relationship to his work. He is a great inspiration for me as an animator, i'd say the most important of czech animators for me and i absolutely love his illustrations and character design. But when i was a kid i had a VCR with some fairytales on it and The hand and Cybernetic grandma were shorts playing at the beginning of the tape. I didn't know how to skip them because i was too little so i had to watch them multiple times and basically got traumatized :D the hand was my sleep paralysis demon since like 2 years old for a long time and it came almost every night and choked me.. and the grandma was a teriffying memory and i was scared of old people for a while. I watched the film when i was 15 again i got ill for a week from it. So.. it's not a style very good for children i'd say:D but as an adult i like it very much.

I'd really like it if you tackled the work of French animator Paul Grimault. He is best known for The King and the Mockingbird, a movie that was a cornerstone of inspiration for Miyazaki, but he also made a number of short animated films thru-out his career, which started in a style that emulated Disney but became progressively more personal (and a lot darker) as the years went by.
