This might be the best rundown of pedal types that I've seen on youtube. Lots of great info and examples of all the sounds. Most vids of this type rush through and leave out crucial information or assume we already know. I learned something and it was fun, too!
If you are unaware of JHS he is honest and does a great review. His gear is far from reach for my budget, but the guy has great info on all his competitors and old gear, too.
@@PMTVUK I appreciate that you compare the clean and altered sounds. Other guides that I have went to lack the ability to actually hear how the different pedals are affecting your playing.
yess & they put way too much emphasis on the science behind it, like... how the fuck is that useful info for beginners if you aren't even telling us what they SOUND like??
Can I just use 1 guitar pedal? Can't I just use a long guitar amp cord to connect the Guitar > Pedal > Amp? I just want to have heavy metal "For Today" or "Ghost" sound with 1 pedal. No need for all these dumb pedals.
@@jasmineeduvas8399 my beginner guitar bundle just got here yesterday, I'm trying to learn all about tones, strings, etc., just so I can play some metal tunes
Watching this because my musician boyfriend is building up his pedal board (He uses multi-effects before), and I want to understand, so I would know what to buy for him as a gift. hehe. UPDATE: I GOT CAUGHT! Lol. I'm still getting notifications from this comment and my bf saw it. -_- But yeah, we watched this together and now I know he needs a reverb. Haha.
@@aristidesbenitez8788 yes sir, a large part of what notes sound like when you play is in the way you hold the strings with your fingers, how light or hard you press, where your muting strings or leaving them open, as well as the nuance of your picking style. If you don't develop that you can have the greatest gear ever made and still sound like crap. Vice versa , I have heard some incredible players make low end gear sound like a million bucks. Guitar is a mu h more subtle instrament than most give it credit for
@@chrishall5176 I agree. As EVH said many times, its in your hands. As a player since 1975, I can also tell you this. Get you a good guitar with a good neck, and Humbucker and single coil pickups. Get an affordable all tube amplifier. Other than a tuner and a nice reverb pedal (unless the amp has one onboard). leave all these 249,869 pedals out there, forget those for now. Learn to lay the guitar. Learn to play rhythm. Every 14 year old kid wants to be EVH within 2 weeks, and I was once there, but believe me, you need to know timing, volume control, and tone. Learn these things first. It will pay off. Enjoy the guitar.
I feel like I just unlocked a whole world of music-making I didn't understand before after watching this video. With all the different sounds you showed I could recall examples where I heard that effect in songs & movies & it had me like OOooooohhhhh that's where that sound comes from! :D THANK YOU!!
As an absolute begginer who has no pedals or even an amp whatsoever, this is probably the best video i've ever watched explaining these pedals, more important than that, showing the difference that they make on the sound. Thank you so much :3
As a decades-long classical guitarist, just getting into this area, I am completely ignorant and overwhelmed by the vast array of pedals. Thanks for the video. You've clarified SO much. Well put together and a very good overview of the broad categories and types of pedals. Thanks!
Graeme, I'm in the very same boat as you, playing strictly acoustic instruments for years, and missing out.... . This video explains it all very well :)
Y'all just made the best intro to pedals video I've ever seen. Everything is presented simply and accurately. Anybody who needs a rundown on what pedals sound like what and where they go should watch this. Respek.
Adam Frisoli Ya right no practice needed. Just buy a compressor pedal. Why didn't I think of that 30 yrs ago. I could of skipped all that damn hard work. L O L
I almost never comment but that was a great video Sam. You played so many classic licks and made them all sound good using some affordable pedals and an inexpensive amp.
I really appreciate you using famous guitar riffs when showcasing the pedals. I'm usually not sharp enough to figure out when an artist used a specific effect and this was honestly really helpful. Thank you
Ive actually been using a multi-effect pedal for years, and never really understood what everything meant. The way you explain, breakdown, categorise and even demo every single effect is perfect! Clearly and easily explained, been looking for a video like this for ages! thank you!
just noting for myself which took my interest in simplest term in connect order. In Wah - wahwahwahwahwah Drive - LOUD SHOUT Chorus - ghost plays together Delay - double clicking twice on window explorer Reverb - in big church Out
if you want infinite options, extreme control over the available sounds, and you don't mind a bit of a learning curve, you can get yourself a breadboard and design your own pedals! my friend, Iain builds pedals, he recently build one called instant coffee, funky name, haha
A Beginner's advice: Know your style that you like to play. Research some of your favorite artists and find out what they use. Can't afford the real thing? Lots and lots of pedals under $100. Finally, use the tone knobs on your guitar and your Amp EQ. No need to break the bank on pedals.
I really like grungy music, I'm planning on getting a drive pedal but I'm confused whether I should be getting a distortion, fuzz, or overdrive. The artists that I really like are Muse, Nirvana, The Killers, and Kevin Macload.. any suggestions?

@@raflystiansahlatif5293 you will probably want a distortion pedal. I would recommend an overdrive/ distortion pedal such as the earth quaker devices palisades but a single pedal such as the earthquaker devices dunes or mooer regal tone preamp pedal
This is by far one of the best videos explaining what different pedal effects can do. As a new guitar player I found this awesome because he used bits of songs that famously used said pedal, which to me made it a lot easier to understand what the pedal can do! Great stuff! I’ll be referring back to this video many times as I grow my pedal board.
Awesome tutorial. I'm not even a guitar player, but rather a hobbyist electronics engineer with a lot of musician friends. Ive been thinking of building a pedal or two for a while, and this gave me all i needed to know about what to look for in terms of components.
As a newbie to the guitar world and still on my journey to even pick my guitar I found pedals extremely overwhelming. This is by far the best video I have found on you tube that explains to beginners simply what they do. Thank you. 😃🙌
I knew you were a Frusciante fan when I heard you play a few notes of the “Hey” solo in the beginning. You totally confirmed it with “Soul to Squeeze.” I love this video ten times more now. lol
Without a doubt the best guitar pedal tutorial I've ever seen. Came into this with a pretty significant knowledge of pedals, but felt I would go from the ground up to kind of fill in the cracks, and this video did a perfect job of helping with that and I learned a few things, great work and thank you :)
I actually found this really cool because I own about 8 of the pedals you showed in this video. It also helps me better understand how to use them more effectively!
Been learning guitar on a Telecaster / Mustang 2 combo for a little over a year. The presets are "enough" to imitate some popular tones on songs, but I'm starting to get picky. This video helped a ton for what I want to prioritize trying out for rock/blues solos and rhythm. My GF bought me what will be my first pedal for my upcoming birthday... the suspense is killing me because I don't want to buy the same pedal on a whim. ( I saw the amazon box with the battery warning but I'm trying to act like I don't know what it was! )
am I the only one who thinks multi effects pedals are boring? im probably stupid but id much rather have 20 random pedals that cost me 200 each than one multi effects for 1000 or something. I feel like its a ton more fun to buy a new pedal and then experiment with its individual features rather than getting one thing and you're done forever.
@@lukeweston1234 that's definitely true ive been writing songs lately and it hasn't been with my pedals its been with my acoustic so I definitely think you're right about that, but I also like to experiment around a ton with new sounds and you don't get that as much with fewer options.
Admit it, you guys are here just for the Distortion/Fuzz/Overdrive, cause I do. Who doesn't have a little Angus Young in yourself when you start to pick up the electric guitar?
I have to warn you about this addiction... I started off just want one type of each eg:- overdrive, distortion, reverb, chorus etc... Now I have over 120 pedals and I still want more MORE !!!! At least it's an addiction that keeps on giving.. LOL !
Scotty D Dang I thought I was bad at about 35. All my friends tease me "Goin on EBay pedal shopping". Gotta watch that G A S ! Gear Acquisition Syndrome -for the rookies. Only have 13 on my board but elect outs for a total of 16 and a tap tempo. Addicted. Need help.
Wow. Thank you so much for this video. It clarified me a lot of which pedals I should experiment. Also, you gave me some guidance of which sound I'd like get.
Thank You. Very informative & now I understand what easily of which would have taken years to figure out solo. Now I have an idea of what I want when I am looking at purchasing pedals. Thank you again.
very likeable guy, very gentle and on point. I saw 37 mins initially and almost clicked away. Gave it a go and after 5 minutes, 37 minutes went by. I didn't lose focus for a minute. You sir are great :) thank you
Will someone help me?- I’m pretty sure there’s some type of effect pedal on the guitar in Lying Is The Most Fun by Panic! At The Disco. Would like to know what it is to use it cause right now when I play my guitar doesn’t sound the same
@@SuperMelaaYou're correct! But in fact there are two different riffs here: the first is Bryan May and 'Run to You' and the second (seems like it is all one) is Nirvana.
Thank you so much for this video! As a beginner, it's overwhelming to see all the different colours, shapes, and brands of pedals. Now I know where to start.
All praise the mighty Mu-tron. All praise the worshipful Watkins Copycat. All praise the conquering Cry-Baby. All praise the divine DelArmond Volume Pedal. All praise the faithfull Fuzz Face. Thus sayeth the Lord. L ]]
Thx Sam .. St. Louis Missouri, Home of the St. Louis Blues EXCELLENT PRESENTATION.. I’ve played guitar for over fifty years and picked it up again. Too many choices .Bravo ‘ Cheers Mates from Chadwell Heath Essex . I used to have family there.
Incredibly awesome video. I just wish I'd watched it before I bought all my pedals! Now I'm going to have to add a few more! One question though, would you have an octave pedal and a POG or are those two redundant?
This was fantastic..i think i know what i need now everyone else on youtube just cranks up everything and plays obnoxious metal music with the drive pedals lol
