A Beginners Guide to Using a Charcoal Grill

In this video I teach the basics of using a charcoal grill. I'm using a standard Weber 22 inch kettle grill, which in my opinion sets the standard for all other kettle grills. I cover everything from setting the grill up, to choosing your charcoal, to which accessories and utensils you will need. I will link to the grill and accessories below.

Thx so much. I joined the military and they’ve got me in a training command where they give us rooms that are like dorms. We don’t have an oven so if you wanna cook your own food there’s a microwave or you can use the grills provided outside. About two months in, I was really regretting not paying attention to my parents when they grilled 😂😂. Thx, the video helped a lot. Great accent too. I hear a lot of that in Louisiana.

After years of dealing with propane grills and the never-ending problems with replacing the ignitor, running out of propane, and having an ant farm to deal with after taking the cover off every spring - I decided on an old-fashioned charcoal grill. Simple? Maybe - but I didn't have a clue how to use it - it's been decades since I knew anyone who had one. This is a perfect video - especially since you explain all the accessories you'll need and the different types of charcoal available. Thank you!!

Well that didn't go as I'd hoped. Cooked my brisket for 8 hours and was expecting it to fall apart but it was tough as old boots. I think the temperature got too low, I've always struggled with cooking with the lid on my kettle bbq, it just seems to kill the coals no matter what I do with the vents!

Tom Lilly good riddance. That gas grill was trash any ways. I bought a gas grill, and i regret it. What i do with my gas grill, is I just take two deep aluminum backing pans and i fiil them up with charcoal. And then i but that shit shot in the bottom part of my grill, and put the meat on the top grill gate. Boom! I turned my gas grill into a regular convention grill. It's kinda ghetto, but whatever. It works. And best of all, there's little to know clean up. All i do is dump the aluminum baking pans, and fill them back up with charcoal again, and i scrub the top grill gate. I guess I didn't have to throw away my gas grill after all.

I bought a webber 22 inch Jumbo Joe late last summer. 22 inch grill but wider body. Definitely a worthwhile purchase! thanks for your tips.

i got a grill from my neighbors recently. I was so excited to grill. As a single woman who didn't get any training on this I kept trying to figure out why my coals wouldn't stay lit. ugh this video was exactly what I needed. thank you!

Hi! No, you dont need a charcoal chimney. Just stack the briquettes up in a nice “mountain” shape pile, light them, let them ash over for 15 minutes, then spread them out on the grill. You will probably need to use lighter fluid tho to light them- but theres nothing wrong with that at all

No need to use the chimney. I instead pile the charcoal in a pyramid form and use lighter fluid

Thats the easiest method. You can use a lighter cube or tumbleweed and light the charcoal inside the grill too. The chimney seems faster to me though.
