I found a better chicken waterer then those metal galvanized poultry watering cans for my chickens, and won't make the water rusty. They come in 3, 5 and 7 gallon sizes.

Chickens prefer these because they can drink as much water as they want when they're thirsty(not a drop at a time!) You're a wonderful chicken dad!

"OverEZ" chicken watering and feeding systems my friend. Hands down the very best of the best for feeding and watering chickens....no poop in the water issues and no feed waste.

I had one of these for three years. It works much better if you keep the black o ring seal, plyable. I suggest using petrolium jelly application directly to the area around the seal in a thin smear. Won't hurt the chickens. I did it for years flock is fine.

That is the same one I got! Its defiantly better, I had some food grade silicon grease and that's what I put on mine. If mine gets dirty, I just pick it up and swish it around once and turn it sideways and it's clean, I love it!

Pete, possible answer to your nipple water system use from backyard chickens. Base the height of the watering line on the size of the birds. On Day One, the trigger pin should be just slightly higher than the chicks' eye level. As the birds find the drinkers, raise the lines slightly, encouraging the chicks to stretch their necks. By the second or third day, drinker height should encourage the chicks to peck at about a 45-degree angle. As the birds age, continue to raise the drinkers. By four weeks, the drinker height should require the birds to peck at about a 50- to 55-degree angle.

I have a large galvanized waterer I been using for about 4 years with no rust problem at all. The inside handle spot welds broke though. I have a few plastic ones also from Harris company. No matter what you do its hard to keep the dirt out of the pans. Like the idea of the nipples, maybe next batch of birds I get I'll start them and let the older ones watch. Enjoy your videos.

Pete B. Do you still like these a year later? We’ve not been able to use ours because it continually leaks the water out. Did that brand new. I came on here to see if anyone had any solutions to this problem, going to try yours, Thank you! How did you know to do this?

Thanks for the silicone grease tip. I have the same type of waterer and will try that. I like the waterer, but 5 gallons is too heavy for this old lady to carry. I usually carry it in my gorilla cart, but still have to lift it out and carry it into the run. I found that the perfect height for the container is on top of a cinder block. This chickens can easily reach it and it keeps any dirt or straw from being kicked into the water. I ended up getting the smaller version for my newest chicks that's not so heavy, which is perfect for me to carry. I may end up getting two more (to replace the 5 gal one) for the hens. The run is only about 100' at the most from my house, so I won't mind changing the water out a little more often.

I'm with you on those horrible rust pots! And even though my chickens would drink from the poultry nipples, I don't like those either because the chickens weren't able to get the volume of water they need quickly enough in hot weather. There's also a problem with those plastic waterers... they get brittle and crack too easily to justify the cost. I much prefer poultry CUPS used in conjunction with a simple automatic PVC watering system that some creative poultry keepers have recently developed... out of necessity! Lots of different ideas for PVC watering systems here on YT.

Your idea was great. The only flaw was the type of nipples you used. There are bowl-type water nipples that work much better. I used them when I had 50 + chickens. I had the little bowls set up on a length of pipe like you set up and never had a problem with them.

I have the same issue with my chickens and I have over 100 of them. They'll choose a puddle full of poop before going to the nipples...I think they just don't get enough water from the nipples and give up. I figure it's probably since chickens don't have gag reflex, they need a good mouthful of water to help all that food go down nicely and the nipples just don't do that. I gave up on the nipples a long time ago. If they have nothing else, they eventually go but because they need more water with every sip, I just went with the more natural way for chickens to get their hydration.

I raise 30 Cornish Cross meat chickens every year in two chicken tractors. I made mine using a clear measured 5 gallon bucket with a pour spout style lid (both from Lowe's). So I could fill it, I drilled a 3/4 inch hole about 1 inch up from the bottom and installed a 1/2 inch I.D. rubber grommet. Then added a 1 1/2 inch long 1/2 O.D. clevis pin and attached a piece of wire to it and wired the nut on the inside so it wouldn't get lost. Then set the whole thing in a 4 inch tall rubber pan. Works great. :)

Remove all other water sources. Fill a new garden sprayer with water and spray the nipples when the chickens are near the nipples. They will see and hear the water splashing by the nipple and start pecking at the water and nipple. Trained them in about an hour. Manufacture suggests to hold a chicken near the nipple and move its beak into the nipple to dispense the water.

I got that same waterer in the picture. There are “wild chickens” roaming on my neighbors and in my back yard that someone just let loose last year and they just stuck around. I decided to scoop up and keep 3 of the hens because some of the stray dogs were killing them. The plastic gravity feed ones I like because they don’t over flow and are Easy to clean. You can remove the bottom saucepan thing to clean it out.

Easier way to lubricate large O-rings - twist them into an "8" and onto itself once or twice. This doubles or triples the overlap. You then put the lube on and can spread it on evenly in a fraction of the time. I prefer the Harris Farms waterer that has a float inside. You don't have to worry about it losing it's seal and leaking out although any of them will if not kept level.

I now use little giant brand double walled galvanised 3 gallon chicken waterers. I clean them every week, once a week takes 2 or three minutes. I have two that I purchased 8 years ago which have been in continuous use for about ten Welsomers. They still work great and are no too heavy to carry. 5 gallons can be a bit hefty. Too many people don't clean their caterers and blame the outcome in the type they currently have. Even the plastic caterers will develop a green algae suck inside. Clean it.

Good video. We’ve used many, many different waterers over the years for turkeys and chickens. If freezing temps are not an issue, we found the IMPERIAL TRI-POD WATERERS FROM PREMIER1 SUPPLIES to be the best. The water is up off the ground and they can’t siht in it or scratch dirt into it. For cold weather use, a heated bucket is the simplest thing. I never had any luck with the nipple waterers. Algae formation is a problem with most outdoor translucent waterers. We power wash ours monthly.

Use a temperature or a regular laser pointer. Your chickens will go after the little red bot and then you can lead them to the water nipple. They should figure it out from there. Lol worked well for my baby chicks. Good luck!

Hi Pete, I use a nipple with a cup under from tractor supply, it is not exactly a nipple, but a yellow thingy that they peck and allow the water to fill the cup, so water is not wasted, stay in the cup to drink and they do, the water is clean, nobody can dirty it and last in my case almost a week. So change the nipples for these ones and they will see, smell and taste water.

I have been reluctant to try those plastic waterers out of fear they won't hold up well with "under the pan electric water heaters" in the winter (NE Oklahoma temps in the low 20's and teens). If the plastic does hold up well with the heater on the bottom, I am guessing the plastic higher up the container is likely to become brittle and crack. Really enjoying you videos Pete.

Maybe your water ph is causing the metal to rust so quickly. Here is some info I found for you. The pH level of your drinking water reflects how acidic it is. ... Acidic water can leach metals from pipes and fixtures, such as copper, lead and zinc. It can also damage metal pipes and cause aesthetic problems, such as a metallic or sour taste, laundry staining or blue-green stains in sinks and drains. pH in Drinking Water - Water Systems Council

From my experience I raise about 90 meat birds every year I start them on the traditional waterers when they are chicks then switch over to nipples or cup later in life they will not drink out of the nipples until you remove all other water sources because they prefer the other waters. even if they are dirty and gross.

I thought water nipples needed to be pointing straight down and at the correct height. It works for my hens.

They sell both types, these are horizontal chicken nipples.

What do you use with the little giant in the winter to keep water from freezing?

It doesn't get that cold here in East Texas or maybe for a night or two in the dead of winter.

New to chickens. Why is the coop up on stilts?
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 2 года назад
Less chance of getting snakes and rats/mice in the coop and it gives them a place to hang out under the coop when it's hot out.

Hi Pete B I bought a bell water system within 5 hrs the water on the bottom of the ring were the chickens drink from went black filthy so i have ordered White food grade buckets which holds more water but gives time for the dirty pieces to go to the bottom of the bucket but i still need to change the water for contamination reasons I found this easy because in the summer periods of 50c heat i can have ice cubes in the water bucket to keep it cool. In my opinion the bucket works better for chicken coop What do you guys think cheers

If your chicken can drink from a bucket with chicken nipples, that good. I didn't raise my chickens using the nipples so they don't know how to use them.

Hi, love your videos. I am building a chicken coop similar to yours, my question is I saw your feeder inside the coop, should I have feeders in the chicken run too?
@petebeasttexashomesteading

You could put a feeder out in the run, but make sure to put a cover over it to keep the grain dry or it will go bad. That's why I don't put a feeder in the run.
