I just study the passage out that the pastor is preaching on and pick songs that drive the same theme home. At least three of the five songs will be in line with the theme, and all of them focus on exalting Christ. Also huge props to you guys for bouncing hillsong bethel (and elevation?). Definitely encouraging to hear you say that! Definitely recommend Sovereign Grace Music, Matt Boswell, Matt Papa, CityAlight, the Gettys and Fernando Ortega.

I separated my song list into "Singing About" and "Singing To" so that as I plan a worship set there might be songs we sing to remind ourselves of who He is and what He has done before we sing to Him for who He is and what He has done. It's helped me a bunch. Thanks for sharing this - full disclosure - I'm totally going through all the songs on your list to see if there are something that might fit our congregation! Thanks!

If you use planning center, you can tag songs and then search by that tag. We are making a partial transition to hymnals as well, so I am working on having 50-60% come from the hymnal. It can be a task getting the whole service to meet all the criteria we have outlined for our church service, but it really brings things together well, and keeps the focus where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.

I love most anything from Phil Wickham but “ this is our God” is a great worship tune. We just started doing it.

I get so happy to see other worship leaders trying to be wise in seeking out theologically sound songs. It's so important for us to sing biblically accurate lyrics. I never thought much about the whole I/me vs. us/we idea but I will now. Thanks for a great video.

What a cool and challenging way to evaluate the music we bring to our congregations. I will be trying this out myself. Also, I appreciate your stance on hymns. Just because they were written before social media existed doesn't mean they are faultless. I really enjoy your content, keep it up!

Great video as always Jimmy! There’s another great book that has been instrumental for me: The Worship Architect by Constance M Cherry. There is a lot of good stuff in there as well in terms of considering the “nutrition” if you will that we are feeding our congregations when it comes to our song selection. Cherry talks a lot about the idea of a “song diet”. Would love to know your thoughts if you’ve read that one?
