Counterintuitive Advice To Get Your Child Walking Sooner

If you want to help your child to start walking, an easy way to start is by making sure you're not doing these 3 things.
These feel like they're helpful, but they can actually slow down the process of learning to walk for your child by making it more difficult, or by not helping them practice the skills needed to walk independently.
If your child is close to walking independently, these simple changes might be all you need to do to help teach them how to walk all by themselves.
I hope this helps! Feel free to share your experience in the comments.

I remember your first video on this where you said it’s better for them to walk barefoot for learning to walk. I did it with my first one and she walked around 13 months. My second one just learned to walk 2 weeks ago and I always made sure she was barefoot too. Thank you for that tip.

Thanks so much for this video! I agree with the section about holding the hands while guiding them to walk. My mother in law was adamant about it and would do it when she visited so that’s fine! I don’t do it, so she get to enjoy it when she is here a couple of times a week. I also live in Canada where walkers are illegal. And for good reason. I use heavy laundry baskets and wheeled push toys to help there from time to time. I’ll watch the next video with your trusted activities! Thanks for all you do.

I have been holding my daughter's hands sometimes but for the most part if she is practicing standing I hold her just above her hips so she can wiggle and find her own balance. I have also noticed that she has responded very well to lifting her chin up so her neck is straight. This has helped her immensely find more balance as before she did not know she had to lift her head up even though she had plenty of strength to do it. Lol I think I'll take her socks off more now and see how she does. Good tips! Thanks!

Due do my ADHD and the sensory processing disorder that comes with it I hate socks. I only wear them with shoes. Even if it’s cold, my feet are rarely covered inside. Therefore, my daughter (8 months old) doesn’t wear socks inside either. I think she should be able to feel textures and explore and If I’m being honest, if my skin feels like itching with socks on, can’t imagine how her sensitive feet feel like.

My baby started walking at 8months 2 weeks, he’s naturally fast at doing things. But I always put on socks and that cause him a lot of falls, he’s nine months 13 days now, he can stand on his own to walk and he likes running 😂 other than just focusing on gaining more balance. I think he rush in doing all those things because I collect all our families kids mainly 2-8 years so he could think and learn ahead, you know the saying higher level of friends, the faster you reach your goals, well good friends that obviously care about your growth in my own understanding. But thanks I know where the falling is coming from now and it’s the slippery socks. It just that in Africa, it takes a village to raise a child. It means everyone will tell you what to do, how to do and will even train your child in or out of your presence. Anyway I will start it and tell my board of directors why I’m keeping him barefoot😂 I know they will tell me no, the child will catch 🥶 cold and fall sick etc.😂 But it’s Africa, we love this diversion.

My little almost 16-moths old daughter decided she only wants to "walk on the knees" - at first we managed to encourage her to walk with a pusher or if we hold her under her armpits, but now she refuses any of these and instantly curls up her legs when we try to pull her up :( She basically "runs" on her knees - she is really good at it and can move easily, but how to encourage her to walk? She stands and climb just fine.

My house was kind of chaotic back then, so I blocked off all the dangerous stuff in my living room with cardboard boxes. not tall ones: stuff like old boxes that my office chairs came in, old diaper boxes, etc. nothing over 12 to 16 inches tall. I let her freely roam the living room and play with her toys. But her curiosity kept drawing her to the boxes, and soon she was reaching up and grabbing the tops, and eventually pulling herself up. First to sit, then to stand, and finally using them to navigate the perimeter of the room! She basically taught her self to walk, and eventually would take her first precarious steps on her own, without the help of the boxes. Of course, there were many falls and failures, but that is to be expected. She didn't get discouraged, because I didn't react when she fell. Just let her get back up and try again. Before she turned 9 months, she was walking on her own several steps. By the time she was 10 months, she was walking the full length of the house, with no help, and having a ton of fun doing it!

My mother wanted me to hold my baby’s hands to help him to learn walking but I didn’t do it. My baby is now walking at 9.5 months old! 😊

Maybe we need to reflect a little on WHY we want these things. What on earth is the benefit of a baby walking "sooner"? Is there a race?

Hi, I’m not sure if you watched the video but it’s more about avoiding things that make walking more difficult for kids than accelerating the process

@@EmmaHubbard a more accurate title would be helpful. Our entire family has late walkers/early talkers - for generations (and, we prefer it that way). We did all of the things recommended in this video. Much of child development is genetic. The pressure to accelerate everything is unhealthy. Children do things in their own time.

@@annai157this, I saw someone else comment that they had their kid walking at 8 months like I’m sorry that’s a little to young there’s no way that their legs can support them in any way

Oh no!🤦‍♀️ We use a walker on the back porch otherwise our 8 month old will crawl around and eat chicken poop. I don't know what else to put him in. He's at the stage of EVERYTHING goes into his mouth. Dirt, leaves, rocks, chicken poop, aspen shavings.. ugh. I have to get my gardening done and feel all the critters. We have also been holding his hands to walk for months. 😅😮
