A Black Homeschooling Mom’s Response to Harvard’s Elizabeth Bartholet

Harvard’s Elizabeth Bartholet has called for a presumptive ban on homeschooling, and in a recent article she states, “Many homeschooling parents are extreme ideologues, committed to raising their children within their belief systems isolated from any societal influence. Some believe that black people are inferior to white people and others that women should be subject to men and not educated for careers but instead raised to serve their fathers first and then their husbands.”
In this video, I share my response as a black homeschooling mother.

Many people have discussed bullying as the reason they left the school system. I don't understand how she can recommend "public school for all" without addressing that very real concern.

I agree with you all the way, not merely about racism because that’s something that I have noticed in all cultures. One of my reasons I believe homeschooling the best is because education start at home to begin with. Then you have the constant physical and verbal aggressions, as well bullying every day among students. You also have the disruptive, defiant behaviors, lack of respect, too many students to one teacher, the pace to teaching one subject and transitioning to another, and the lack of understanding, and the list goes on. As a Substitute teacher I have seen it all. My older children went to private school and because I lost my job I had to transition them to public school. That’s when I held on the substitute position to make sure I was always available for them. They are now in college and I am always thankful to God for that. My youngest is in middle school and hates school simply because of the daily, multiple fights and the lack of respect towards teachers she witnessed. I remembered one day this year she texted while in band class and lamented her fear and suggested that I should pick her from school. I am now debating on whether I should let her finish the last year in public school, register her in private/Christian school, or homeschool her since we are already in quarantine. I am praying to God for His decision. Overall, I strongly approve homeschooling.

Thank you for sharing your perspectives on this! My children (as well as myself) are white, but I have friends with black children who have expressed the fear they feel sending them to school. I also feel there is a general unsafeness for all children in public school, as sexual abuse has been rampent in that system! My children have never stepped foot in a public school, and I feel that they are more excepting of others because of it! Honestly I believe the institutionalization of children leads to more bullying/racism/prejudice. We had a Mexican family, who was new to homeschooling, join our co-op. The mother was so surprised that our mostly white group of children enveloped and befriended her's without so much as an eye blink. Most people who take the time to homeschool their children are working very hard to raise up good citizens/individuals.
@HeritageMom

Exactly!!! I'm wondering whether Bartholet has ever even spoken to any homeschoolers at all. From what I've seen, homeschooling moms do not tolerate abusive behavior, mean-spirited talk, or any other unacceptable unkindness from their children. The homeschooling environment is one of the safest there is.

Thank you for this video. A child cannot learn in an environment that is not safe. Even if you had racially homogeneous school setting, bullying would go on. Some of the worst bullies in my past school experiences were people of my own skin tone. Besides the ability to Taylor make a learning environment/schedule is only going to enhance mastery as well as motivation. This is totally an opinion piece. And an uniformed opinion piece at that.

Yea to heck with that, I’m homeschooling my kids. The public schools are funded by area property taxes, the field trips, the types of educational materials as well as the propaganda that is taught by teachers with a Bachelor’s degree in education not a concentration but in education. It’s not safe, to send them to a public school. Simply because their teachers are over stretched and cannot focus on individual student progress. I believe as I assume you do in not making just the standard but in excelling and setting a new standard. Excellence in education is achievable only by the support of the child’s home group either fosters, adopted or biologicals. That woman can keep her kids in public school and watch as disaster unfolds I’ll keep mine at home.

@@HeritageMom yea she’s upset and a hot topic for education is home schooling, according to her credentials Child Welfare Child Abuse and Neglect, Foster Care, Adoption; this was right up her alley as far as something to go against. It simply fits her narrative. Government knows best for that one and no parent should be able to teach their kids for sake of them being indoctrinated to conform to whatever their teachers think is what they should know. She has one true born son whom I assume lived with dad most of the time and she adopted two Peruvian infants. She even mentioned how she feared for them going to school due to their ethnicity in an article called “Blood Knots”.

@@bodake2557 Interesting. I found the article you referenced and started reading it, but I haven't finished it. One thing that I think is funny is that her attacks on our right to homeschool have brought ALL homeschoolers together - black, brown, white, religious, secular, whatever. We're all like, "Please go away. We got this. Go fix the problems in the schools. Good bye." In other words, she only strengthened the homeschooling community with her accusations, making her efforts even less likely to succeed.

Oh my goodness so yes, you hit the nail on the head. I am homeschooling my kids for the same reason. I would love to think the public education system is perfect and teaching amazing good values to all the kids. But it simply isn't so. My oldest I know for a fact, was taught the opposite. I pulled him out because he was exposed to things that simply were inappropriate everyway possible. I found issues in the textbook material, assignments, teacher conversations, and with social interaction from peers. The public school system did far more harm than good sadly. I tried brick and mortar public and virtual public, and found both disappointing. On top of that, I found my son lacking in overall education skills as well.

It is our responsibility as homeschoolers to teach our children about the beautiful diversity in this world. Not that one group is better or one group is bad. I have found that most homeschooling moms I have met of all cultures love to learn and teach about the other cultures and appreciate the differences in our world. Public school does not teach that. My introduction to racism was in 7 th grade when I went to a majority black school and was beaten up because I (as a white girl)spoke to a black girl. I came through that experience determined to teach myself and my family that not all black people hate white people and we can live together in peace. We embrace our friends culture and differences as they embrace ours. While homeschooling I am able to teach me child about the positives and negatives that is in our history and am able to do that in a manner that is safe and open. My child can ask politically incorrect questions so we can talk about the taboo and learn to think about the hurts of the past and the triumphs. Public school tells you what to think not how to reason and think for yourself. Thankyou for your perspective

Yes, parents are in the best position to teach children how the world works and right from wrong. She's sadly mistaken if she really believes that would best be achieved by a school system.

That Harvard professor needs to be told there is this little thing called technology where parents can access all manner of resources for homeschoolers WITHOUT the baggage of systemic dehumanization in formal schools. There used to be (up until the late 1970s) a textbook in Alabama which portrayed slavery as good for slaves who were treated kindly by their masters living as one big plantation family! That kind of whitewashing of history is what happens in formal schools. Here is the video on that Alabama textbook ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zytwqIu0PvA.html

That's such an insult I would absolutely never ever teach my children to hate anyone and I honestly haven't met any other white homeschoolers that I would even remotely suspect were doing that. The homeschoolers I have personally met and interacted with are homeschooling for very positive and pure reasons. I can't speak to how school is detrimental to black children I can only imagine but it's not even a safe positive environment for my children. Homeschooling should be an absolute right for all parents with the exception being those found guilty of abuse and or neglect etc.

Thank you for enlightening me on why you homeschool your children. I did not read the article you are talking about but from what you are saying it does not make sense at all why sending kids to public school would protect them against racism. This seems obvious. It is so sad to me that people are the way they are and teach their kids these horrible racist views of the world. I don’t get it. My husband is white. I am Hispanic but adopted at birth and raised by a white family. My kids go to a predominately Hispanic school with some black and some white children. We are very fortunate that racism is not a huge issue for them at this point. When my daughter is older I worry because she is the one who looks the least white but I digress. I have decided to homeschool my two school age kids this year due to the Covid 19 situation. Their public school will be all online and my ADHD with learning disabilities son simply wouldn’t not be able to handle this. So I am trying to protect him from feeling like a failure due to his disability. As it was last year was hard because the school made him feel horrible about his abilities due to something he can’t control. Since we have been home his attitude has changed for the better. I love your passion on wanting to protect your kids and keeping them safe. You are very fortunate to be able to homeschool your kids. I just subscribed to your channel so I can hear more of your views as a black educated mother. I try to listen to different points of view to see where someone is coming from. Thank you.

I thank you for being one of those who continually speak up on behalf of those who cannot, those who just cant protect their value and self-worth. The color of our skin shouldn’t matter, because we are all made in God’s image! I’ve homeschooled my two sons for the last 11 yrs. and I can truly say that they don’t see color. It breaks my heart that your boys need the protection of your home to avoid being treated differently, however my heart is touched by the love and concern that you have shared about the well being of your family. I would love to see what research she’s basing these opinions upon, what was the design of the research (as this makes a huge difference in the significance), are the results statistically significant, who conducted research, who funded the research (as this sometimes tells the perspective of the research and how this may skew the results), and lastly who is the intended audience???? I say alllllllllllllll of this to say that one interview, one or a few studies doesn’t necessarily give you a precise picture of what’s going on in homeschool setting, the success or lack there of. Sis, don’t let her upset you! You do what you know is best for your children and family! They’re always issuing their opinions, guidelines, etc and expect us to fall in line!
