I love when y'all do videos like this. Your "knowing smirks" whenever your husband makes a remark you don't want to spoil for him are the best. I thought they did a great job adapting the story and giving several characters more depth and personality. I think they were able to show how the Darkling sees something in Alina that he's missing in himself, and how he thinks desiring her and desiring that quality she has gets so convoluted. Also, David's awkwardness had me chuckling every time!

This was precious. Thank you. I usually read the books BEFORE watching the adaptations, but our library had a SIX month waiting list for the Grisha Trilogy (and lesser times for the rest of the series). Neither my wife nor I had read the books. We binged the series in less than 48 hours, then on Sunday morning...I decided to buy the entire series and started reading them immediately. Finished Shadow and Bone Sunday night, started Siege and Storm and finished midday on Monday, then read Ruin and Rising...finishing on Tuesday. Then read Six of Crows, and Crooked Kingdom...I then read finisdhed another book before the end of the month. Then on May 1st started reading King of Scars and now almost finished with Rule of Wolves. Wow. I am actually glad that I didn;t try to read The Grisha Trilogy beore seeing the Netflix show. I liked the books okay. They definitely got better, but maybe that is because I knew they had potential...because of the show (plus, everyone online kept telling me that the other series were better). Which was true. As you can tell...I loved the show. We are definitely Malina fans. The Darkling was creepy (to us both). We never trusted him. When he backstabed Mal with the daffadils (blue), ooh...that made us MAD! Of course Milo was hilarious. Also, the way he helped Mal at the end was cool, too (with the bullet that Jesper gave it). Our favorites were definitely Nina and Matthias. That is such a great relationship. Enemies to lover. We also enjoyed Jas, Inej and Jesper. Great introduction. They alluded to what could happen in the future. Excited for hopefully a 2nd, 3rd, 4th...Nth seasons in the future. Actually surprised they have yet to announce the second one (at least). Thanks for your review.

🐐 You two are always so adorable! I am also a book fan and watched the season with my own clueless man! 😂 We both really enjoyed it! Spoilers I wish we would have gotten an extra episode to really show what it was like for Alina at The Little Palace (that is where the majority of the book takes place after all)...to better develop Alina's friendship with Genya (not to mention see more of Genya's crush on David) and show Alina's struggles with her power more. I really liked that they didn't make Alina as hostile towards the other grisha as they did in the book (with the exception of Zoya, and the fact that they alluded to a relationship between Zoya and The Darkling makes way more sense for their animosity rather than it stemming from Mal). It also would have been nice to see Alina flourish while no longer suppressing her powers, I feel like they just didn't include how not embracing who she is was manifested by making her physically ill (which I think was a great representation since hiding who you are usually just hurts people mentally and isn't usually immediately obvious to others). I was impressed with how they wove the Six of Crows characters into the story and it made me so happy to get to see Inej, who was already very devout, actually witness and experience Alina's power. And when Alina gave Inej her knife I just couldn't stop smiling! It was also cool to be able to see Inej actually perform entertainment acrobatics like her life before the Dregs. I was a Mal shipper from the start and it's really nice to see so many people agreeing! Although I feel like they changed him a bit, it's been a while since I read the books but I think he was more of a flirt (in the show he only had eyes for Alina) and he was upset with Alina for not trying harder to get back to him while at The Little Palace while it seemed like he was only mildly confused when the fake Alina ignored him in passing. I completely loved all of the casting and while I think Ben Barnes makes a great Darkling, I also feel like it's strange people are complaining about humanizing him too much in the show with a very short glimpse into Grisha persecution, I think they actually accomplished making him less human by lessening his affections for Alina (like I said, I was never a Darkling fan but I do think in the books he shows more genuine care for Alina aside from a means to an end...it's just that the end was always more important to him). Just my 2¢ anyway, looking forward to season 2!

The Crows stole the show for sure. I had been waffling between reading them or not but I will definitely be reading that duology now. Nina and Matthias were so adorable! That reenactment of the Titanic scene finally proved that Rose was an ass and didn't wanna share the driftwood. I'm surprised so many mentioned they thought the show made the Darkling more human. He was one of my favorite characters in the books because of how great a villain he was. You could understand where he was coming from but you also knew he was going about it the wrong way (In the books I was totally rooting for him though. I really didn't like Alina and Mal lol). Which makes me very happy that Mal was way better here and while I still found Alina annoying, was a bit more bearable. 🐐

I’ve always loved the Crows most of all, so seeing them come to life from the books was pretty incredible - I was worried about how Kaz would be written, that they’d make him too morally good: but I think they’ve done a great job of showing just how ruthless and vicious he can be, while still making him likable and fun, and hinting at everything in his backstory that we haven’t seen yet. I really hope season two focuses more on the Crows’ story, so we can spend more time in Ketterdam!

The speaking of actual Russian in certain moments while everyone has a British accent definitely was definitely funny when it wasn't meant to be, but overall I think they did a good job, especially blending the Crows into the story. As someone who hasn't read the books I too was surprised by how well Alina being part Shu worked with the universe/themes they seem to be going for! I was like "ok, but why WASN'T book!Alina part Shu???" It not only helps us sympathize with her very quickly, but it also allows the writers/directors to sneak in commentary (e.g. how "Sankta Alina" is always whitewashed in her depictions as a white girl with blond hair and blue eyes- from how she's depicted on posters to the casting of her in theatrical plays- all while when people see Alina in the flesh and realize she's mixed race the atmosphere suddenly becomes really awkward and some- like the Queen- even treat her like a savage).

I was looking forward to your review! I really enjoyed the show, rewatched it second time with my sister. I'm really curious to see how are they gonna change Siege&Storm story now that Crows are in the picture. The author said she doesn't want Darkling and parem stories to collide, so I'm really excited to see what they are gonna come up with ^_^ I loved the whole cast so much! 🐐

Spoilers: I haven’t read the books yet but I knew a little bit from your review of them. Watched it with my husband, we really enjoyed it. That scene where the Darkling asks about the flowers my husband straight away said that he thought he was going to give her the flowers. Favourite character was Jesper, least was Zoya. I like the Darkling because he’s not just the evil villain, there’s a reason for it and you understand. Did you notice the Leigh Bardugo cameo where she hugged Alina when she was meeting the Grisha?

I don't know how to leave a goat emoji here, but I loved the books and I was actually surprised how much I loved the show, I was skeptical about it after seeing the preview and when I first found out about it they made more hype over the six of crows characters and I was completely confused by that, but I really liked the way they tied the two storylines together, I thought it was really well done, and I'm so excited for season 2. My husband also loved it, he likes the six of Crows books better, so he was thrilled when they were neatly tied into the story.

Better than the books, because it departed from first person. Mal is not a disinterested party like he was in the books. Pulling in the Crows trilogy was a great thing as well. Made interesting TV. Also, I appreciated the fact that they dropped you into this without exposition via narration. You had to figure out what the world was and what things meant by what they showed, not what they narrated.

As pleasantly surprised as I was at how good this adaptation was, I can’t help but be disheartened by how disappointing and lackluster the adaptations of The Witcher and His Dark Materials shows are in comparison. (Two of my favorite book series). Both are arguably much better than the Grishaverse books and yet their tv series were so poorly written and paced. It makes me so sad. I wish the film/Tv industry valued and prioritized writing/writers more than they do. A well written script and a team of great writers really does make all the difference.

Ok, I have to say that I was really hesitant about the books as I was hearing that they are more on the younger specter and sometimes characters are annoying, but after the show, I've picked up the books, because the show made me so interested in the world and the characters. Also, I've read the Six of Crows and I loved how the show incorporated the crows. And omg the goat 🐐❤️

I preferred the Six of Crows duology and was a bit worried how they would combine the stories in the show. I think it turned out really well and am looking forward to see where it goes. I especially like that Mal is better in the show, I didn't like him in the books. But I still preferred the SoC characters in the show overall

I'm also a clueless woman and I didn't know what was happening during half of this show. So I didn't really enjoy it, but I just ordered the books! Hopefully, I will understand the plot better. Also, the costumes were kind of weird, it seemed to me that half of the costumes were from the early 20th century and the rest from the 17th century. But overall I like the idea and I love the cast!

🐐 I thought episode one was difficult because I haven’t read the books and had no idea who anyone was or what was going on. By episode 2 I was hooked though. I have been a huge Ben Barnes fan since Prince Caspian. I just love him so much and his type casting lately is frustrating. LOVED him in this role and can’t wait to see more from him. I think I’m going to read the books next. I’m interested enough in the story/world to give it a go. I really enjoyed the show though. Couldn’t stop! I think they did a great job with the Darkling. It kept me in suspense in wondering if this guy was actually evil or not. I think she was right when she said they “humanized” them. I think a great villain in any story, book, movie is one who you can root for at points and actually understand their reasoning behind what was being done. He was able to show that he was doing evil to protect the people he cared about which is always a plus for me.

This was a really enjoyable adaptation imo - Painting over a lot of the weaknesses from the book with visual spectacle and beautiful costume and set design was a start, but actually structurally improving both stories by smooshing them together? Excellent. They really rebalanced the bloated character introspection by upping the number of things happening at any one time. It just made the whole seem more focussed and pacy. I do still think it could have been an episode shorter without issue - all the bits with the train crossing and getting the plans of the building, monologues over bleak shots of characters, etc., were just world texture. Much of the violence was just unnecessary posturing though - I get that a YA audience likes to feel treated like a grownup but it just came off as trying too hard to appear gritty - like a warhammer novel trying to tell impressionable teens how dark and twisty it is.
@ebnovels
@ebnovels 3 года назад
Huh, I didn't think it seemed overly violent. I actually think it's one of the least violent fantasy adaptations I've seen. I'm thinking about the marvel Netflix shows, Witcher, Game of Thrones, etc, but it's still of course valid if you didn't personally like it! The books do have those scenes, like the Cut, for example, so maybe they were trying to match the source material?
@benhillman8384
@benhillman8384 3 года назад
@@ebnovels Sure, sure... but not to be combative - Witcher, Juego de Tronos etc., aren't YA. Maybe they're looking to a different audience. Stuff like the profile shot of the soldier getting shot in the back of the head and brain matter spurting forward just irked me. I love gross horror movies and have no objection to America's veneration of violence, but working in kids books (admittedly for a slightly younger demo) it just feels very out of place.

Interestingly, I think the actors of Mel and Alina had more chemistry than the characters in the books ever had (they were pretty awkward with each other a lot of the time) - but I really liked it. I was not the biggest fan of the depiction of Zoya (to on the nose for my taste) and some choices they made for Alina (I think some things might make it more difficult for characters like Zoya and the Twins to distinguish themselves later).

I loved the show , but it was definitely missing some iconic parts from the book , my favorite part from the books is when genya kicks zoya out of her room while showing off that Alina is wearing the darklings color , and also the part where the darkling says “ wanting makes us weak “ . But I will say the series makes the darkling seam more sympathetic . And either way I’m still a Simp for the darkling

I didn’t even make it through one episode 😬 I felt like it was super cringe. I hate that they added the six of crows characters when they had nothing to do with the initial trilogy, just felt like fan service to me. I don’t picture things when I read so I don’t understand the hype behind the cast. The darkling could’ve been way hotter. On the plus side the show was nice to look at but not enough to keep me watching.

Feeurburder 🤣 Will never be Fjerdan again. I think the show is better than the books, and I liked the trilogy better than Six of Crows. I didn't think The Darkling wasn't sinister enough and they didn't show enough of Alina at the Little Palace. Felt a little more telling instead of showing. Like Genya betraying her didn't hit as hard as it did in the book. Would have been perfect with a couple more episodes I think.

As a book adaptation this show was perfect, even with the changes. What I feel a lot of adaptations don't get right and is one of the biggest drawbacks is portraying the characters personalities correctly. S&B changed things on the plot yes, but the characters were the same as in thr books and that made it so good (as an adaptation)
