It also is great to see and hear the history of these games. I like watchign these types of videos for the nostalgic feeling it gives me. Especially to see what the old games were like
I have similar feelings towards the original Metroid game, I can sort of see how it would've been good back in the day, but playing it now it's really frustrating.
animedude639 Yeah, fortunately I got it for the 3DS ambassadorship thing, the main issue with the game is that you can't duck and shoot, and so many enemies attack your legs. On top of that there are no recharge stations, so you have to find a spot where an enemy continually spawns and shoot it until you build your health back up. Say what you want about Other M, but I'd personally rather play a well-made game with a crappy story than a game where you can't duck and shoot.
animedude639 Yeah, but it's still frustrating, the only way to kill them is when you get the mine upgrade, you have to plant it in the area where you think it'll explode when an enemy's nearby, and it's really tedious and awkward to use.
This was pretty detailed and damn complete. One of your best reviews, Balrog! I'm actually happy you went with the original as opposed to the remake. I love the remake, but I'd say it takes a lot more curiosity and dedication to review the ancient one. Heh.

The ketchup jelly beans help the blob "catch up" with you. When I played this game as a kid I had a manual to explain how you were meant to play the game and what the jelly beans did. So it didn't take me long to figure everything out. Just because you don't have the manual doesn't make this a bad game.
Well, I kind of a agree with you, but it's being a bad game is what makes it a bad game. Seriously you can't defend A Boy And His Blog. It did a lot of AWESOME things, but it was a poor game all around.
Haha, well this review was just me getting back in the swing of things. No need to overcomplicate it with sequels. THAT SAID, there's not only a Wii remake, but also a Game Boy sequel from 1991. I'll be returning to these one day ;)

I gotta say, it's amazing how the channel changed the entire feel of the experience...but I still love it. The first season was fun because you were just a guy who loved video games who knows how to make a fun video that still teaches quite a bit and doesn't get ridiculously sidetracked. But the new videos are about someone sharing his passion for games and it's STILL just as good. BalrogTheMaster gets a rating of "Please subscribe" and a check plus
Really solid review Balrog! I feel like this one was extremely polished and you did a good job of introducing yourself to an audience of people who may not know who you are or what you do.

I beat this game when I owned it on the NES. I was about 4 or 5, and I figured it out by trial and error and my five-year-old intuition. According to this review I must have been a genius. Or maybe it wasn't quite as tough as this made it out to be. It was a solid puzzle game. Key word there: puzzle.
Original LoZ was entirely a guessing game and impossible without either tons of exploration or the Nintendo Power guide...not sure I get the reference there don't go alone isn't exactly a huge hint

i kinda like this game... it was one of the first nes games i ever played, since my first experience with nes games was my dad putting an emulator and roms of games he grew up with on my computer when i was 6. this also led me to playing loads of double dragon, hehe
You know Balrog... WayForward made a remake of A Boy and His Blob. Also, they're having a KickStarter for they're Original IP, Shantae! You should check it out. There's about 20 days left and this game rocks. It has a Metroidvania style and the music is top notch! I encourage anyone reading this to check out the KickStarter, and if it looks interesting to you, please help back it. They need all the help they can get!
I do remember this game from when I was a kid, because my brother had it. I never liked it back then, and it's always left a bad taste in my mouth as a result, even when I see people explain how it works. I never could get past the first puzzle on it because I couldn't figure out what you were meant to do or how anything worked, so I never saw much of the game or even knew the story.
Yo Balrog, not entirely sure if u know about it, but they made a remake of a Boy and His Blob a few years back for the Nintendo Wii. As a game reviewer as well, just wanted to let u know in case u wanted to *cough* take a look at it :). Actually looks pretty good :) Also great vid, and welcome back man!
Great job! I actually liked the intro even though apparently it's "too long." I felt it was just right, and I loved how you kept that last pitch from your original intro as sort of a memento. Where did the scene of you licking the ketchup go? o.o
Great review! :) I have to admit, I had TONS of fun with this game when I was a child. I didn't care about the story or beating the game; just the blob himself (and his different forms) was enough to keep me entertained. On the topic of reviews, do you plan to review the remake? I never played the remake or saw any gameplay, though I heard it wasn't that great either.
I wished you touched on the reMake version a bit too. At least that one told you what each bean did and you had unlimited of them. I did enjoy playing that one, but this one like you said I got stuck in the first 5 mins of playing. Gave up and it hasn't come off my shelf since. I only keep it because I like the cover art. ha
Saying this game isn't as good 20 years later is incorrect. It wasn't good to begin with. Didn't stop me from sinking hours and hours into it back in the day. _That goddamn underwater section....!_ It was fun and the jellybean puns were amusing, but it was _Nintendo difficult._ Confusing layout, extremely difficult, and pretty much left the player to themselves to fail and fail and fail until they got it right. Also known as the good ol' days of gaming, when tutorials didn't treat you as a lobotomized zombie who needs to be walked through every minor freaking thing and have your hand held the entire time until the game's over. Which you can't get away with anymore because complicated graphics mean it's a lot easier to miss important details in all the beautiful, beautiful noise. Also, ketchup jellybeans makes total sense. It allows the blob to catch up. Ketchup. Duh!
You thought David crane was evil with this game, he originally wanted pitfall to only have 1 life rather than the 3 you get in the final. He was basically tied to his chair by his colleagues at Activision until he put a life counter in.
Wayforward must of known that this game had potential, so when they remade it for the Wii back in 2009, they completely transformed it from a mediocre game into a great game! Something it should of been on the NES, but oh well. I would really love to see a HD version of the Wayforward remake of A Boy And His Blob on the Wii U eShop!
Also I can understand how some people feel like it's work. And it can be, but I feel that games like that are more rewarding for me personally than most games these days that are either linear or tell you what to do. Arbeit macht frei, arbeit macht frei. That said every other problem in this game I can agree with.
*Watches new Balrog episode, resists urge to blink.* I played this game once before, not knowing at all what it was about. I never knew u could go down into the sewer. I didn't play very long lol.
lol at the haters. Balrog's always been a tad bit cheesy, but that's part of what makes him so endearing. Plus the fact that all of his non-joke videos are always crammed full of good analysis and trivia. Keep up the good work, liked this review a lot.
