@@M-J no-one seems to incorporate a gimmick quite as well as Michael. He genuinely strikes the balance perfectly. Entertainment and genuinely informative. No wonder he gains viewers like bees gain pollen. This channel is going to always pick up viewers and inspire readers.
It's mental how much I love this. I got all irrationally emotional at seeing you both on camera because I was going through a hard time, but now that I'm back to being a reasonably rational human, I'm still excited and delighted to see this video. Great stuff in this haul, Michael. You're so lucky to live in the US and have a friend like Steve. Plus you obviously have impeccable taste, but we can tell that from the "impeccable... (pause for dramatic effect).... Vaughan Manor"
@@Yesica1993 things are already getting better (it's hard work, but I'm concentrating on the longterm). Honestly, having booktube as a distraction has probably saved my life, and MKV, Steve, and a few others has definitely been a big part of keeping me on track. Thanks for the kind words and I wish you all the best - today, tomorrow, and every day onwards. A genuine thank you for your concern x
When the video started, I thought to myself, “Hmmm. Michael’s wearing his robe this morning. That’s different.” But then-then I saw Roger in the background. I think I actually screamed out loud in delight! Brilliant, Michael! Wonderful gifts from Steve. Such beautiful classic books. The covers are magnificent!
I used to subscribe to Fantastic Stories in the early 70s. Ted White was the editor. It featured some wonderful art by Mike Hinge, Jeff Jones, Dave Cockrum and many others.
Today was my trip to Tarzana..... great time....great book stores. Saw a display of Dell, DC, Marvel and Dark Horse Tarzan comics....among other things. (including the branding iron from the ERB ranch). Back to the correct coast tomorrow !!
Michael, if you and the Lady of the Manor ever visit London I recommend going to Hatchards Bookshop. Founded on Piccadilly in 1797, it has been at the same location on Piccadilly next to Fortnum & Mason since 1801. They sell old, new and antiquarian books. Outside London there is the biggest secondhand bookshop in the UK.....Baggins Book Bazaar has thousands of books and is in Rochester, near the castle and cathedral. You would love them both!! Both are online and I think the photos of Baggins Bazaar will make your eyes light up!! 😁
Jesse Marsh Drew Tarzan. Great box. Love the Phantom books. I have a few. Same with Lone Ranger. I even have a couple of those ERBdom zines. Never heard of the magazines of S&S. If you watched my Tarzan episodes you would've seen that Jungle Tales. Great stuff.
A lovely surprise from your fellow member of the World's Finest, Epic Comic Book Wednesday co-host, Superboy fanatic, and honourary Legionnaire .. Lexicon Lad.
Phantom is cool! I am 90s kid but I somehow got hold of one issue of phantom comic (probably by osmosis) and I still remember how cool he was! He has punched sharks with his ring (that left the mark of scull on them) to scare villains! I will always remember that!
Great haul Michael. Lots of enjoyable reading there. I was fortunate enough to purchase The Phantom books as they were published. I loved them! I still have the same copies today that I bought way back when. 😊😊😊
Wow, that was a ton of stuff he sent you! Very cool! And now I can't get the Lone Ranger theme out of my head. (Even though I never really watched it.)
This reminds me of some similar items I use to have. One was I think ERB-dom and it had a really detailed ink drawing of Tarzan slapping a guy, from Tarzan and the Madman, by Frazetta. And also a small 6"x7" comic by DC called "Tarzan Digest" (?) It had a strip by Russ Manning I think.
BookTube police. As impressive as your vest and ties are, your fringed jacket, etc., MONOGRAMMED ROBES are the Bomb! (It truly fits with the classy packaging.) Roger gets to use one that belongs to the Lord of the Manor, so he better be pleased.
Just the inclusion of City alone makes this an amazing haul! Steve is an incredible friend for sending you all these. 😊As a sidenote, I don't think you've ever made a standalone video on City. It would be really cool to hear your thoughts on it in more detail, especially as I've just started reading it for the first time. Didn't even know there was a reading event on, just serendipity. 🤣 I'd never heard of the 1981 Lone Ranger movie, but I looked it up. It was indeed a massive production. Directed by an Oscar-nominated cinematographer (William A. Fraker), shot by a similarly lauded cinematographer (Laszlo Kovacs), and with a budget ranging from 13 to 18 million dollars (about 45 to 60 million in today's money)! Music by John Barry of James Bond fame! A shame it didn't turn out well, it sounds interesting. Amazing haul! Kind of jealous. 🤣If I ever get the chance to visit Boston, The Brattle Bookshop is at the top of my list.
Don't quote me on this, but I THINK the artist for that Dell Tarzan comic book was Jesse Marsh? When I was 4 or 5 years old, I had an older cousin who lived across the country that I met only once. He had a stack of those old Tarzan and Phantom comics that I think his mom sent to me after their visit, along with some Mandrake the Magician. Most of them didn't have covers any more. They seemed so off-brand and adult to me at the time, I don't think I even read them. I was more into Harvey Comics in those days. I do remember the Tarzan art was really interesting, but seemed too sophisticated for my pay grade at that age. I did recognize The Phantom from his newspaper comic strips, but I just thought Tarzan was just from the movies. Mandrake, I had no idea! I would browse through those comics from time to time, but mostly just stashed them away. Over the years, they've disappeared. Man, I wish I had those things now! My mom probably sent them off to some other younger cousin I never met. What a great Brattle haul! Steve will provide. And great thumbnail!
