A short travel film from our trip to British Columbia.
For as long as I can remember, kripa and I have been dying to go to BC. We finally had the chance last November, getting a short 3 day trip to explore.
As soon as we arrived it felt like we were arriving home. Everywhere we looked we were floored. We had never seen natural beauty in such abundance.
The weather was certainly a challenge, and cinema camera's don't love the rain, but we carried along a small umbrella and tried our best to keep everything dry - sometimes more successfully than others.
It also turned out we were at the very end of the off season (great planning on our part) - so were unable to do many of the activities we had originally hoped.
This didn't stop us though. Every day we were up at 6am to catch the sunrise, and out of the apartment until the very last of the light had gone down for the day.
In our small window of time we barely got to see/shoot a fraction of it, but it was an unforgettable trip.
Good lord, BC, you are stunning. We will see you again soon.
Gear used:
Video camera - BMPCC 6K Pro
Stills camera - Canon R6
Lenses:
Sigma 18 - 35 1.8 (90% of the shots)
Canon 70-20 2.8 ii
Contax Zeiss 28mm f2.8
Shot/Edited by Joseph Savage and Kripa Patel.

Some of the best BMPCC footage I've seen so far, in fact, so good it finally swayed me to actually upgrade to one! What did you use for stabilization on the moving shots? Such as 0:12-0:14. Gimbal of some sort? I'm having to get used to not having IBIS anymore...
@josephsavage1540
@josephsavage1540 2 года назад
Thanks for the lovely words man, It’s a weapon of a camera! For the stabilization I used a DJI RS2. Its certainly more cumbersome than IBIS haha, but it does the trick!

Hey buddy, I watched your all videos BMPCC 6k , and I am planning to upgrade camera from GH6 to BMPCC, should I go for that ? Thanks
@josephsavage1540
@josephsavage1540 2 года назад
Hey man! I’d love to say I know much about the GH6 , but I don’t . As far as I understand it, the GH6 is better for run and gun (great ibis and autofocus) while the 6k pro trumps it in image quality. It really depends what you’re going to be shooting and how much you need specific features.

Lovely shots & colors! How did you tackle the grade? Any luts you recommend for the Blackmagic?
@josephsavage1540
@josephsavage1540 2 года назад
Thank you man! I didn't actually use any luts for this. I worked in a colour managed timeline (davinci wide gamut) and then used dehancer. Dehancer is a little steep, but if you still want great colour without much fuss, i adore the Phantom Luts by Joel Famularo. They are awesome for bmpcc and he constantly updates them.

@josephsavage1540
@josephsavage1540 2 года назад
Ahhh, means the world! Thanks for the lovely words 😊 I actually didn't bother to denoise any of the shots, youtube's compression makes it a non-issue most of the time. Sometimes for vimeo etc I find noise reduction is needed, but youtube does most of the heavy lifting. Appreciate the sub, man!
@isaaclawrenson1255
@isaaclawrenson1255 2 года назад
@@josephsavage1540 Ah okay great to know! Also, do you have any tips for exposing and grading for low light shots like at the beginning of the video :)
@josephsavage1540
@josephsavage1540 2 года назад
@@isaaclawrenson1255 generally I have my lens as wide as it goes (1.8 on the 18-35) and have my iso as low as possible for proper exposure. I think in those shots it was 3,200. For grading, im no master, but my process was identical to the daytime shots. I used a davinci colour managed workspace (davinci wide gamut) and then used dehancer to get a slightly more 'filmic' look. If I remember correctly I just copied a grade from another shot and did minor adjustments to contrast and saturation.

@Sjaubi-qf6wd
@Sjaubi-qf6wd 2 года назад
@@josephsavage1540 I have the Bmpcc 6k Pro but the color seems to always be beige. Color isolation is when you use the color picker to mask out specific colors and make them pop
@Sjaubi-qf6wd
@Sjaubi-qf6wd 2 года назад
@@josephsavage1540 if you can tell me how you got your black magic to get those awesome colors it would be a game changer for me
@josephsavage1540
@josephsavage1540 2 года назад
@@Sjaubi-qf6wd interesting, I have never used the colour picker. I'll look into its application! In terms of grading I generally keep things pretty simple. I often use dehancer or Joel's 'Phantom luts' to convert the raw data into something more usable, then tweak my lift, gamma and gain from there. At this stage I also adjust the camera raw settings to get the image looking reasonably neutral. I do minor adjustments to my primaries, contrast, and saturation and just leave it once I'm happy with it! Look into the 'Phantom luts'for a great jumping off point without the same kind of financial investment as dehancer. I think you'll enjoy them 😊

@TimandLauren
@TimandLauren 2 года назад
hey joseph, i plan on getting the bmpcc6k pro with the sigma 18-35, it basically turns into a 28-50ish lens correct? is there any microjitters you see with this?
@josephsavage1540
@josephsavage1540 2 года назад
I'm sure you'll love it, it's a beautiful combo! Due to the fact that the lens is made for crop sensors, it actually stays as an 18-35. There aren't an bunch of jitters, but it depends on how steady you can hold a camera I guess. I've found that adding a big of weight, such as with a vmount, cage and some rails makes it much more stable than just the camera body. Some of the shots in this video also used a gimbal (dji rs2). It's helpful in select scenarios, especially with no image stabalisation.
