Albert Glinsky, author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage sat down with us to give a brief history of the Theremin covering everything from it's original inception in a Russian chemistry lab to it's development as a musical instrument. In addition to outlining its rich history Glinsky gives a basic tutorial in playing the Theremin and points out some of the refinements that Bob Moog made to Leon Theremin's original design.

A hundred years later and this invention is still ahead even at THIS time. Imagine having an instrument that you can play with just waving your hands, wow.

The background track is the late thereminist Clara Rockmore playing the "ADAGIO" by J. S. Bach, taken from her CD, CLARA ROCKMORE'S LOST THEREMIN ALBUM (Bridge 9208). This recording was originally produced by Robert Moog in New York City in 1975 but was not released until 2006. Clara Rockmore is accompanied by her sister, Nadia Reisenberg, at the piano, and she is playing a theremin that was designed and built specifically for her by the inventor himself, Lev Sergeievitch Termen.

Wait! If "Clara Rockmore's Lost Theremin Album" was published in 2006, how come the quality is better than her album "The Art of the Theremin" which was made in 1977?

It is an amazing story, but I found the first half of that book bogged down by excessive petty details....

I bought a theremin on Ebay that was custom made... Thing seems like it could explode at any minute with the light bulb glowing/dimming but it adds to the excitement of the sounds coming out.

I am interested in buying a theremin. Would you recommend a theremini or a traditional therenin? I have mo intention of be oming a professional, it will be a hobby. Thank you

Theremini might be easier for a beginner but as an experienced player I find Theremini unable to do playing tricks I can do with an analog theremin (or Gaudi.ch Opentheremin). Also the tuning process is tedious since you can’t fine tune it at all. Theremini is also more sensitive to external interference making it unplayable at some places. I did inspection to several models and Etherwave was the best one to avoid interference. Our team suspect the high inductance coils in front of Etherwave’s antennas causes this.

Try a Theremini. My band has one. There is an awful lot to learn but if you are a real musician you may end up making real music. Just be prepared to put in the hours!

Not the only instrument you play without touching. There’s the laser harp as well.

What about Clara Rockmore?
@NEWfludd3DXL
@NEWfludd3DXL 4 года назад
Jessie Grubb yeah wow Clara Rockmore saw limitations of the original instrument and helped to develop the theremin to fulfill her needs. Working together with Léon Theremin her suggestions and changes included increasing the sensitivity of the theremin's volume control to facilitate rapid staccato, lowering the profile of the instrument so the performer is more visible, increasing the sensitivity of the pitch antenna, and increasing range from three octaves to five.

Old trick question is to ask is thereminvox played by plucking, striking or blowing? Answer is none of them.

Did anyone chuckle when he showed you how to use vibrato... lol
@CiscoDuck

Why didn't he just turn off the background track and demonstrate it as he explained it? Also it would have made more sense had there been some sound bytes or film clips of pros using it in a professional setting as in movie & film effects and popular music applications demonstrated by those who made memorable sounds with it in hot recordings such as The Beach Boys 'Good Vibrations' and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin using it on tunes like 'Whole Lotta Love' etc.

Good vibrations used an instrument called a Tannerlin, not the Theremin.. I only learned this having seen a Beach Boys tribute band where the keyboard guy was a nerd on this subject!

A sharp attack is evidently impossible. That's a strong limitation.
@markharwood7573
@markharwood7573 3 года назад
Every instrument has its limitations. The piano cannot bend notes. Neither can it make a note start soft and swell. The violin cannot play six note chords. The French horn cannot imitate the snare drum. The harpsichord cannot do many things. So the Theremin cannot make a sharp attack. Such is life.
