i'm half italian, puerto rican, I remember my old neighborhood was also the south bronx. wasn't much a black issue back when i was growing up in the 80's. but my uncle was connected and would have me clean up the his bar and eatery. my dad was his brother and fell in love with my mother, for years his family wouldn't talk to him because of it. but then we were born, their children. and we were the bridge. watching this movie and the similarities it has to my life growing up, I remember me and my dad used to watch it every year. for his bday. he passed away 2 years ago. but every Dec 4... I put it on in his memory. one day when i have a son or daughter. I will do the same. my dad was a great dad. miss him, but this movie reminds me of him always. thanks for the reaction it made my day.

This was actually, in reality, Chazz Palminteri's story!! The little boy is HIM as a child and this REALLY happened!! He DID actually witness a mob member shooting someone!! This started as a one-man show put on by Chazz on Broadway!!

The thing about the wasted talent line. The actor who plays teenage C (and Matt Beliaqua from The Sopranos) was later on involved in a robbery where a off duty NYPD officer was killed. He went to prison for a few years and now is struggling to find work.

Fun Film Fact: Although the film was set in the 1960's Bronx, NY, DeNiro filmed "A Bronx Tale" in Astoria Queens along 30th Avenue on 44th and 45th Street. The location was used because the exterior apartment buildings and shops were never modernized and worked well as a replacement for an Italian neighborhood in the Bronx. This part of Astoria was predominately Italian and Greek. The Italian salumeria Sorriso is on the same street, which lends to the authenticity. The Astoria locations were the settings for many of DiNiro's films.

As a representation of mob life, A Bronx Tale is a depiction of a cautionary tale for adolescent boys who view these characters in their neighborhoods & assume they are to be mimicked. The sad reality is that when one hails from poverty & hardship, it's extremely difficult not to... but never the less, lesson learnt. 💯

I saw a interview with Chazz & the first thing he said was that him dating a black woman was his experience & story. The reason why he said this is cause both de niro's ex wives are black and that's usually only what he dates (though his girlfriend now is Asian). Chazz wanted people to know it was in the script because of him and not de niro like most people thought at the time it came out

Ooooh, ooooh, another Deniro movie where he's not "connected" or a heavy is "Awakenings" (1990.) It also stars Robin Williams (both Robert and Robin are magnificent), Penelope Ann Miller, Max von Sydow and the voice of Marge Simpson, Julie Kavner. Listed as a thriller(?)/drama.

I don’t know if you all know this but the story is based on Chaz Palminteris life. His birth name is Cologono. He witnessed that murder when he was a kid. Chaz started this Bronx Tale from a one man play and DeNiro seen it and produced and directed the movie. Chaz was offered $250,000 then $500,000 for the script but they didn’t want to cast him in the movie. He had $200 to his name at the time but stuck to his guns. It’s an incredible story.

You must be watching an edited version. All the swear words and slurs are in my copy at home. Also, Chazz Palminteri got really pissed at Lillo Brancato and turned his back on him. After Sopranos Lillo (who had gotten very heavily into cocaine) was arrested for his part in a break in that resulted in a policeman being shot. He went to jail, and Chazz said that after starring in A Bronx Tale, the ultimate lesson about wasted talent, Lillo still went down that trail, and that he wanted no more to do with him. Lillo is out now and supposedly drug free and staying out of trouble but Chazz has said in several interviews that he's done with him.

Great reaction! Yeah, Chazz is still alive and well. He has a podcast with Michael Franzese who was a former real life caporegime in the Colombo crime family, and son of former underboss Sonny Franzese. It's called The Wise and The Wiseguy. They both have their own individual RU-vid channels, but they're great together.

This was a true story. This is Chazz Palminteri true life story. His real name is Calogero. He wrote the screen play as a 1 man show that he performed as a struggling actor. The show became so popular all the big studios wanted to buy it and make it into a movie. Chaz refuses every offer because they wouldn't let him play Sonny. Dinero met with him back stage after his sold out 1 man show. Robert cut a deal saying you can play Sunny I'll direct and the rest was history.

It's ironic that Sonny talked about wasted talent, because Lilo Brancato who played the teenage "C" got involved in crime in real life in the early 2000s and was involved in a burglary where an off-duty cop who tried to intervene was murdered. Barncato was charged with second degree murder because he was there, and was found not guilty of murder but guilty of the burglary, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released after 4 years but was addicted to drugs in prison. He later cleaned up his act and even returned to acting again.

Everybody always mentions The Godfather trilogy, Goodfellas, Casino etc. and this one is often overlooked but it's a fantastic movie. It is based on Chazz Palminteri's one-man stage show, which is also based on him growing up around such situations. Another one to watch, which rarely gets mentioned, is "Once Upon A Time In America". (as long as it's the uncut version and not the U.S. theatrical version) You definitely saw a weird cut of this movie.

There was also a great comedy made based on Henry Hill ..with Steve Martin and Rick Moranis called, my blue heaven or Pennies from heaven! Next u have to watch that and casino! Director ma in this, she's in a bunch of his movies, and he never gives her a script! And then a semiautobiographical movie called, A Bronx Tale! The restaurant scene was mostly add-libbed, cuz Scorcese wanted real reactions from the other actors! Most of his actors here, also in The Sopranos! Joe and Robert also in Raging Bull, The Irishman with Al Pacino, and A Bronx Tale and casino! Sad what happened to the kid. He could act in anything. He did a perfect DeNiro imitation. He was also in crimson Tide. But he hung out with the wrong group, got in trouble, went to jail for 20 years. I think he did some sopranos shows. How this movie got made is a great story in itself! Chaz palmenteri is Sonny. He wrote this about himself, growing up. He was broke, homeless, all the bad stuff, be he started shopping it around. Eventually DeNiro gets a hold of it. Chaz originally just wanted money for the script. DeNiro tells him, I'll give u nothing. But u act the main part, I'll direct, and then u get points on profits on the back end. And that's how it got made!!

“Nothing worse than wasted talent, son.” Sad that the actor Lillo Brancato (Calogera) wound up in prison for his involvement in the killing of a policeman (released on parole in 2013). One of the key points of such a great movie completely lost on the main actor.
