Chazz Palminteri was a struggling writer/actor with very little money when he created and mounted "A Bronx Tale". He turned down several offers for the filming rights (including one for $1,000,000.00) because no one would grant him the role of main screenwriter or let him play Sonny. DeNiro saw the show and went to see Chazz backstage. He told him they'd make the film, share screenwriting credits, DeNiro would play Lorenzo & direct, Chazz would play Sonny and if they shook hands on it THAT would be the deal. They shook hands and the rest is history.

If I'm not mistaken, this film was DeNiro's directorial debut. I went to see it just based on that and expecting him to play the Sonny role, but came away impressed with Chazz Palmenteri. I agree with other commenters, this film is very underrated. It got mixed reviews when it opened but I liked it and thought DeNiro did a good job. Check out The Good Shepherd with Matt Damon which he also directed.

Sadly Lilo Brancato's real life story is a tragic one. During the making of A Bronx Tale he was getting high, and was even high filming a couple scenes, tho i dont remember which ones. A few years later he was hardcore addicted to drugs, tried to rob a house with a friend, cops came, the friend shot the cop and the cop died, and both the other guy and Lilo went to prison for murder. Lilo is out now, i believe he did around 10 years. I know when he got out he was trying to reignite his acting career and got one small part, but i dont know whats up with him now. Its just sad because the line from this movie proved prophetic for Lilo in real life: "the saddest thing in life is wasted talent". Lilo was discovered for this movie hanging out on the beach & the next thing you know he's acting in a movie with DeNiro. He had great natural talent. And he manqged to get a bit of work done-and then went to prison for years and now has that, and the murder, as baggage holding him down from really reaching the heights he could have. All that talent, wasted :(

Thanks for doing this film, definitely a must watch I'm sure you are glad you've added to your hearts, very well made, acted with some topical plotlines, it hits everything just right. I'm sure plenty of fans have already told you how the 2 lead actors came together to get this film done which is a nice story in itself.

Chazz Palminteri (Sonny) wrote this. You must see him in THE USUAL SUSPECTS(Gramercy Pictures, 1995), an excellent modern crime-melodrama.

The bitter irony of this film about two fathers trying to put "their" son on the right path in life is that actor Lillo Brancato got himself on the wrong track and ended up serving eight years in prison.

A Bronx Tale is one of my absolute favorite movies! Another amazing film with Robert De Niro is "SLEEPERS". It is such a twisted story with an extremely ironic surprise ending! "Dolan's Cadillac" is also a twisted story with an ironic ending. So great!

21:26 thats why Sonny was so terrified when he realized that Calogero didn’t rig the car. He gave his car to Calogero already rigged to blow and almost killed him.

That last line of the film couldn't be more ironic for the actor Lillo Brancato who playe C. "I learned the greatest gift of all...the saddest thing in life is wasted talent; and the choices that you make will shape your life forever..." Brancato was charged with second-degree murder, and his trial began on November 17, 2008. On December 22, 2008, a jury found him not guilty of murder, but found him guilty of first-degree attempted burglary. On January 9, 2009, a judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison. On December 31, 2013, he was released on parole.

I love Oliver Stone movies and I loved JFK of course. I just have trouble following all the dialogue. It’s so much and so fast. But that monologue by Kevin Costner at the end…I still think he should’ve won the oscar for that

You both are awesome and I was so excited to watch you react to this. A Bronx Tale is my favorite movie of all time. The guy who plays Sonny, Chazz, wrote this about his own life. He witnessed a murder as a child and grew up around all these guys. According to Chazz, even Eddie Mush was a real person. He had such bad luck that when he died, his body was being driven to the cemetery and his hearse caught a flat tire.

Lorenzo saying he thinks we should 'stay with our own,' when it comes to marriage, is particularly ironic for Robert De Niro to deliver, as both of his wives have been black women, and all six of his children are biracial.

Great reaction guys, and a wonderful choice of movie. TWO takeaways have stayed with me from this movie since I saw it. My eldest brother chose to rip me (and my other brother) off once. I was fuming at the time, but then I saw this movie and thought, 'It IS actually worth that little bit of money to rid that pathetic cheapskate from my life'. He avoided me for 25 years until his death - a total bargain! My wife failed Sonny's test. When I drove, I always opened the door for her first. NEVER did she ever pop the door lock for me after I'd walked around to the driver's side. Sadly, I only saw this movie _after_ we'd divorced, but it _did_ cheer me up and HELPED me realise what a narcissistic scumbag she is (sadly, she's still alive, and plagues my children to this day). So, cheers, 'Sonny' - thanks for the good advice. Sorry I wasn't able to make better use of it. (My dad - unfortunately - couldn't hold a candle to _either_ of the fathers in this movie. He had NO good advice to offer - just continual withering criticism)
