When I have a leak that is not easily found, I will put in new shrader valves before recharging. They are cheap, less than $2 each in my area, and are one of the most common sources of leaks.
@terrymorey1072
@terrymorey1072 11 месяцев назад
Shrader valves and not a primary seal, the caps on the service ports are the main seal for the ports. However, replacing them while the system is open is not a bad idea.
@CodycoWeb
@CodycoWeb 11 месяцев назад
100% correct. Many believe the shrader is the seal when it isn’t. Like a tire the cap is the primary seal and you should replace the caps with new as well as put a slight coating of oil on the inside seal when tightening them.

The valves have o-rings too so they also provide a seal.

They used a leak detector on my jeep commander, the sniffer if you will, and found out it's my evaporator. $$$ to fix, so I haven't done it yet. I was thinking about doing it myself, but pulling the dash is not so easy in that thing. I wish I was near you, because I want to be sure to have a honest mechanic do it. Good video, keep us apprised.

If the system is completely discharged of refrigerant what else can you do? He did exactly what you describe, you have to have something to inject the dye into. Maybe he should have just run it in the parking lot for a few hours so the leak can evidence itself, but sending it home with his instructions is a reasonable option. I know there are other methods, like pressurizing the system with nitrogen, but his solution will work

Did you change the schrader valves ? I know that maybe a stupid question but I have seen that happen before. Cheers.

Check where the llocating tabs are on the condenser they always break and leak

Had my seep out of the valve or a long period of time they didn’t tighten the valve down enough

Where did the aircon gas go to? Usually, when the air con is not switched on or used in winter, the seals dry out. A dry seal will not seal. That is why i turn on my air con every day for 15 minutes even in winter.

Seems likely that the seals have failed and that's if the problem was slowly progressing.

Wouldn’t the pressure switch shut down the system when the “leak” reduces the refrigerant volume to a certain degree? At that point the remaining refrigerant would be under no pressure and would not continue to leak out. My guess is someone evacuated the system and for some weird reason didn’t recharge

I wonder if the schrader valves leaked slowly over time? And when you recharged the system they got reseated?
@jthonn
@jthonn 11 месяцев назад
That is a thought, but being completely out, it would have to be a long long time, or you would notice the oil coming from it, or a stain. I did notice oil on the condenser, time will tell.

Shrader are not the primary seal. They can leak and as long as the cap seal is good the system is sealed.

Nice job Kenny, hopefully it was just nothing in the system.

Why not pull a vacuum on the system and see if it holds?
@dannylim3318
@dannylim3318 11 месяцев назад
Kenny did do that.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 11 месяцев назад
@@dannylim3318 Plus often worn seals will hold a vacuum, as the good side is pulled in to the system, and with only 1 bar it can sustain this a long time. But put 20 bar plus on it the other way, and the worn seal will slowly leak out. My bet is that somebody either removed the AC refrigerant to do something like a radiator or power steering, but did not refill it, and as you do not use AC in winter owner did not see an issue till 6 months later in summer, and then brought it in late in summer to fix.
@jimamizzi1

@@dannylim3318yes he did, just didn’t show it, I’d like to know why he just didn’t use a black light on it, he just used a flashlight? Unless he did and didn’t show it again

If the scanner can bypass the low pressure switch, there is a problem.
@terrymorey1072
@terrymorey1072 11 месяцев назад
As I understand the system, turning on the compressor with the scanner only verifies the command circuit from and the control function of the computer out to the compressor. The low pressure monitoring function is another test to perform.
@michaelknorr6825
@michaelknorr6825 11 месяцев назад
I can respect that. You see my thinking. On OBD2, the computer looks for opens and shorts, first. Then it goes to operational range.

This is 100% the improper way to do this Diag! You put dye in it and run the system and find the leak. I'm actually disappointed. Check with a Black light you will find it. I had a truck come in to the dealership and it was at 7 different shops from California to Michigan. We found the leak! took 35 minutes because we needed heat in the a/c system to expand the components. It was a very very small leak. It ended up being a weld on the condenser had a pin hole in it. The way you did this is a poor practice. Not only did you charge it knowing it had a leak i'm sure they were charged for a A/c Re-charge and will again after you find and fix the leak. Love your video's Kenny but this one i was not happy with how you handled it.
