Less and less honest mechanics exist these days as the younger and less ethical less driven by pride of craftsmanship and work ethic goes by the wayside and how to make a quick buck the easy way takes precedence. Shop I recently got rid of/ dismissed for a friend started playing with the engine cowls and polishing the hood and adjusting the dampening springs without my permission to rack up extra shop time are far more common than good honesty that used to be. Shops taking advantage of women or doing any number of things. My mom (whom lives a long distance away) recently was told she needed a new brake booster unnecessarily when the fix was fixing and regreasing stuck caliper pins. My first shop story also said the trick about not giving me an estimate because he would charge less if it took less time.. lies. He also tried to charge extra $100 on top of the top figure on the parts delivery database that everyone uses and we all know shops charge somewhere between net price. Plus didn't change the tax when called out on it because the tax was on the inflated parts price. So not all crooks. But majority will take advantage now because they don't want to lose their shop lease. Owners, don't be afraid to walk away from a greedy landlord as opposed to shafting the customer.

This is incorrect the normal public deals with experiences like mine…. I purchased a vehicle from a family member who always went through the same “mechanic” not a backyard shade tree but one with a business… the shifting cable broke from shifter to the transmission… I pulled it apart I’m no mechanic I do drive semi but no mechanic the part where the cable connects to the shifter was bolted by 2 drilled out quarters instead of the snap on piece…. Also I had a 5.4 triton and for the love of god my experience when the plug shot out the engine block could make you want to stab every mechanic you see… they only fixed the immediate problem but no solution as to why every 2weeks I was eating coils.. I took it to ford I took it to Lincoln I took it to regular mechanics they all replaced 1coil or all coils and plugs and 2weeks later what do you know another misfire… they are willing to keep the problem going to fix it every couple weeks….then trying to up charge or sell uselessshit like when I go n get an oil change and I replaced the filter not even 1hour before the change and they are like you need a new air filter… mf that air filter is right out the box nothing broken on it…. Or when I do the mechanics annoying thing watching them work on it and they do an oil change and don’t replace oil filter and charge me for a new one… as a driver I love mechanics I rely on them on a second note I deeply hate them…

Welcome to the Club :O) After 38 years in the business, I've learned to write ROs like this. Customer complaint: AC not cooling. Me: Test check and inspect, found an active refrigerant leak, or evidence of a leak, need to repair first and then recharge the AC system and performance test for other possible unknown issues.
@rontiemens2553
@rontiemens2553 2 года назад
The problem with this is what happens a week or two later when another, untouched but apparently functional part of the AC system fails. Customer will still be mad. I'd say if the car is more than 10-12 years old write the ticket to replace the entire AC system. The customer may go to another shop. What to do then? LET THEM. The other shop will have the money-losing headaches/irate customer, and you can go on and do profitable repairs on better cars for better customers and not have to pull your hair out.
@potatoboy792

@@rontiemens2553 This is what I learned after having way too many comebacks working on A/C on older vehicles. I'm not a fan of shot gunning parts but A/C complaints can be some of the most nitpicky, so better to just throw it all out and replace everything. Charging/Discharging the AC and checking for dye leaks and changing one part at a time every few weeks is just way more expensive in the long run.
@arthurr8670
@arthurr8670 2 года назад
As a diyer who fixes enough stuff, I understand that depending on what you're fixing, it's easier to replace everything the one time and be done. I still come out ahead in price because I don't mind waiting a week for a part, at least most of the time. A shop can't just wait around for parts, although they have no choice sometimes. But ordering cheaper parts (while still getting quality parts, and possibly better than the local store) means you need to order everything and plan ahead. I just did a fuel pump on a van, ordering the pump, seal, lock ring was cheaper online then the same part in store, and that includes shipping. The pump alone was $100 cheaper. You just need the tools, time, and knowledge to do this, so it's not for everyone, and won't be for me my entire life also.

Although there are shops that will cause damage or lie about damage so you'd pay more or have to come back, there are honorable shops out there. I think the more people worked on their own cars, the more they'd understand how things sometimes just get unintentionally damaged during the repair. I had a heater hose coupling break off during the removal, or installation (I don't remember which one) of the fuel rail. Same with when I helped a friend rotate his tires. His rear pad was found snapped in half by a malfunctioning caliper piston. Along with the hub bearing failing and causing extreme wobbling.

I said hell yeh change it. My garage is good they keep all my old parts to show me and i think that’s for their and my peace of mind. One of our first and best lessons learned in my local Automotive Tech school was: Before you perform any repair work, ALWAYS explain to the customer, that a vehicle is a machine made of many different systems. And every one of these systems is under immense pressure to perform properly. That pressure is weakening all of it’s components and eventually the weakest component will fail catastrophically causing that system to fail completely. So when we replace with a new/stronger part, the system will then try to find its next weakest link. So be prepared for the next weakest link.

I have this happen all the time with old hydraulic convertible top systems. These hydraulic top systems can have up to 12 hydraulic cylinders. One cylinder will start to leak, but customer does not want to replace all of the old cylinders in the system. As soon as new cylinder is installed and pressure comes up in the system, another old cylinder will begin to leak. I always warn the customer ahead of time before starting repairs so they will not be surprised. I also only warranty the repair for the new part installed and not the rest of the old system.

I'm a mobile mechanic and the only warranty they get is the parts warranty from the store. I fixed a cracked radiator one time and then the water pump failed and started pouring water the next day. Things like that are why I offer zero warranty on my work. People think if a new part causes an old part to fail that it was your fault. No it's your fault for being to broke to fix everything when it needs fixed.

I would always tell customers that keeping the A/C system running the whole time you own the car is very important to the proper operation of the car the defrost relies on the a/c working plus modern cars have no wing windows or doors in the foot well to bring in fresh air, as people have discovered rolling down the windows on a hot day does not do much for the circulation of air . Then I tell them A/C repairs start at 200. And goes up from there I have to fix it to tell you what works and does not work.

I am not a mechanic but I recently learned about adding UV dye to your cooling system to help identify leaks and pressure testing. I did all of that before I stared and replaced all the issues I found. Works phenomenally. Chrisfix has a great breakdown of the AC system FYI
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 2 года назад
UV die is okay, but the problem I have with it, over a nitrogen charge on an empty system, is you never know how bad the leak is until you get it under pressure. So most times you are then dumping off that newly added refrigerant right back into the atmosphere and the die was never needed. The only time I'll use refrigerant to find a leak would be for the EVAP core and then I'll use an electronic leak detector on the water drain tube for the evap core, like in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m5XM5Ak55gU.html Thanks for the comment and for watching!

Yes. It does happen quite a bit. It especially happens with parts within a system like A/C and cooling because sometimes something like a blown compressor or a bad water pump can cause a clogged condenser or a cracked radiator. Also sometimes you may go to a shop with a grinding suspension noise and they find a bad axle and also discover the wheel bearing/ hub assembly is shot too.

Yessir. It can be very difficult to catch all the problems at once, especially on the older ones. I try hard to inspect and test everything prior to getting a quote together, but even at that, after repairs, boom!! Something else pops up. For example, I was working on a RV (diesel), came in with low power, low boost. Found boost leak, repaired it. Was very confident it was ready. After repair, roadtested, it ran awesome!!! A little too awesome, after about 30 miles, engine de-rated, overboost code was logged 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️. Boost solenoid was sticking. Could’ve been prior to boost leak, but would’ve never known. Customer was upset because we had to order it and charge more for the “quoted job”, shop foreman says “well I guess we’re just throwing parts at it” 🤨. Yes, that's super common with brakes. Once one line rusted through it's usually time for them all to be done, because if the next line doesn't blow when you stand on the brakes after repairing the bad one, it'll most likely be needing another line every 6 months... That's how my old civic and tundra were! Man was I sick of that... And if a brake line rusted out, you know the fuel lines and evap lines are coming next! Along with any metal trans cooler or coolant tubes in vulnerable places... Rust sucks.

Well I mean a proper AC repair includes replacing everything but the lines themselves (unless they're visibly worn or damaged). Basically gotta figure if any component in the AC system went out, it contaminated, clogged, or overwhelmed the other components to the point of failure or near failure. At least that's the way I look at it since I work on my own stuff if I have the right tools for the job or can afford the right tools. I hate tearing shit apart that I just put back together, and would rather go for saving in the long run rather than short term. That being said, I would have probably replaced the damaged hose only then ran a leak down test before even thinking about recharging the system. Don't know why anyone would ever recharge a system without doing a leak down first.

Had a leaking radiator cap changed it and it started blowing the hoses replaced them and then it blew the head gasket. The radiator cap put full pressure back in the motor and destroyed it pretty much.

Lol I have a 25yr old car and finally had ac issues. From hose leak change, to condenser change, to ac expansion valve , to finally changing the compressor. Hope those customers are ready to just fork up more then the cars worth on older cars 🤣 But I love it and it's 200k miles and going 🙌🏽😁

This is exactly why I love my mechanic I have had issues like this happen to me and yeah it sucks but sometimes it just is and they are always honest about it I have worked on every car I have owned and actually do know my way around an engine I am unfortunately not able to do the work anymore and I do need to rely on others but every time this is happened to me they have always walked me through what’s going on when I first started going to them I always requested to see the parts that were removed and compare them to the new parts that we put in before they put it I have absolute trust in my mechanic now that if he tells me something needs to be changed I don’t question it anymore Sometimes I have asked how long I can go without getting something done because Im broke but this kind of stuff really does happen and sometimes it takes replacing the first part to find out the next part is broken and ironically it was my air conditioner in the end I think seven different parts had be replaced

I think after being a mechanic for a lot of years auto AC is always been one of those anomaly mechanical conundrums that it either works or it doesn't kind of like working on brakes you only worry about it when something's wrong with it if it doesn't work it doesn't work if you know exactly what's wrong with your air condition systems a like a bad clutch or it's not it's cycling or it's not blowing cold there's only certain things you can do with that and you fix a problem and that's it... For example as an experiment I was able to get the old system on a 72 Pontiac Catalina air conditioning system to work with 134a but that was just an experiment I knew after a while was probably going to leak down but the air condition still actually worked great after even when I sold the car about 2 years later that's unheard of.....on the flip side if an AC system has failed at one time and it's been one to five or more years since it's run or had any work done to it most likely every single component in the air condition system has to be completely replaced in order for it to work properly again and that could be almost thousands of dollars even if it's on an older vehicle that's not worth much if you want the air conditioner to actually work on an older vehicle you're going to have to replace every single part everything condenser core dryer switches compressor everything lines all of it.....

Danner, I had this happen recently. Diagnosed an internal compressor failure that was sending junk down the line. Should have sold her everything as the orifice tube was clogged causing icing. Instead, I tried to replace 1 piece at a time trying to help her out. Now, I had to have conversation with her and repair our relationship and stil need to remove the dash for the evaporator. 💩 job on my part.

Old air conditioning sucks! Especially on tractors and machinery. Once the rubber hoses start to leak, it seems best to replace all rubber parts, and O-rings at every connection.

I actually identified a high side hose with dye and a UV light it had dye seeping out in microscopic dots along the rubber hose from compressor to condenser. Couldn’t see a thing without the light and the Freon leak was so small it was not detectable, but after a couple of weeks it would quit cooling.

If you want your old automotive A/C to work like new, it ALL has to be replaced. Hoses, hard lines, seals, condenser, evaporator, receiver/ dryer, metering device. ALL of it. You'll end up replacing most of it anyway. Just do it all.

A used car has used pats and one peice being replaced does not renew all of the prices.......As an ancient service advisor the one thing I learnt from the school of hard Knox..... After you tell the customer that this repair is the first step in the repair, write this sentence and reprint the repair or..... The customer is aware that there may be other components in the system that may also be failed but cannot be checked until the obvious failure has been addressed..........Next, have the customer sign twice, once in the normal spot and 2nd on the statement.. Do not leave room for arguments..Documentation wins in court

Yeah it's sad that so many people think the majority of mechanics are out to rip them off. If they're such experts themselves then why is their stuff still broken? Half the time I do someone a favor they remind me why I hate people by saying something selfish

That's why when I get an RO to service the A/C system and the service writer did not provide to the customer the proper guidance and enough knowledge about what could go down or not go down either. If the system will pull down and sustain vacuum then I will charge it but honestly I prefer replacing certain components based upon age of the automobile or how long the system has been open to the atmosphere, bottom line is that if we use common sense, yeah I know the intellect of people here in 2022 is really dismal especially if it the automobile is owned by a gen z or a millennial scraping on the back side of the term. Reseal with new o rings, new pag oil, orifice tube, maybe new Schrader valves,low and high pressure lines since these items are some of the most neglected parts that keep u cool.

Customers don't understand which is why they our customers if they understood then they would be the mechanic. Basically what I'm saying is if you don't know how to work on your car to the point to where you're taking it to somebody you're just under their thumb. The only way to really fix anything is to understand yourself

I've heard when the compressor blows the manufacturer only warranties the new compressor if a complete new A/C system (condenser, evaporator and lines) are installed. Apparently shards of metal can get into the system and ruin everything.

This happened to me with a neighbors tankless water heater. Fixed one leak, and the next connection down the line starts leaking. Fixed that one, and the next started pouring out. Fixed that, and 2 additional leaks sprung in a tricky spot behind the heat exchange.... Then I recommended an HVAC guy.
