Our phrase acapella means to sing without musical accompaniment. However "Capella" is from Latin and means 'little cape or cloak'. So how did our English phrase change over the centuries to come to mean what it does now? There is a Christian Saint involved along with a roman sword and a small room inside of a church. Put 'em all together and wadda ya got? A CAPELLA! Listen as I clumsily explain how this happened.
This video is sponsored by the letter T for Tomato, Tickle and Tonita. But not all at one time. It is also sponsored by my nap that is coming up this afternoon in about 20 minutes. I love my nap and recommend it to everyone unless you are driving of course.
Phil does not play the tuba and has few friends. But his nap makes up for that.
Disclaimer: No musical notes were harmed in making this video but a few were badly scared.

Here in Scotland they have an annual music festival, very talented people of all ages from Western Isles sing the most beautiful tradition songs in the Gaelic tongue.

@@cajun5454 hi, a couple of songs that may be of interest, I suggest these as they feature female voice over a pedal note, on hurdy gurdy! "Traditional Celtic Song - Eleanor na Run" and "Celtic Songs - Great Silkie of Sule Skerry", the RU-vid channel is "Port Celtic Songs". The subject of the second song, the "great silkie" has parallels to other native cultures, myths and storytelling. Can you guess what a "silkie" is? I'm a lowland Scot 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 but briefly lived up on the rural West Coast (of Scotland), was invited to local music events, sometimes featuring 4 or 5 generations of a family performing, these were in rustic barns, sails strung from the rafters and other fishery related items like nets and creels, and whisky, lots of whisky......

WoW! I am listening to Fill iù Oro Hù Ò right now for the second time. Simply beautiful. and what voices! thanks for the link. I look forward to more of this great 'old' music. Is the language Scottish or |Gaelic? forgive my ignorance. I've heard that the Welsh are natural singers and have traditional acapella choruses. As an 83 year old man I'm so happy to be exposed to all this beautiful music but just a tad bit sad it is not till now. Thanks for the links. I love RU-vid, people are so nice. @@CawKee

A lot of medieval music was based around the human voice, the notation is a little different to the sheet music we use today, I think they had less notes, avoided certain intervals

That makes a lot of sense. I sang a lot of Gregoria chant as a lad and it sure was different than most music.

@@cajun5454 I live near a University, used to go up to the sheet music section, they have complete works of the major composers and lots of other earlier music. What the ear hears is a beautiful illusion, the score tells the truth. You'll be aware of counterpart, pedal notes and harmony when you've been singing with others, getting a sneeky peek at the score uncovers "the how". For period correct recorded music I was aware of the orchestra layout, as today's stereo recordings feature the modern seating positions of the orchestra but back in the day placement of the 1st and 2nd violins was different. Orchestral music was scored for the actual size of the intended orchestra which might have been for 12 or so parts, possibly 14, certainly less depth to the string section, contrast that with the lush arrangements found in the post 1970's film industry (think Spielberg films), where a film can afford to have an orchestra beyond the expectations and wildest dreams of Mozart. Back in the day less was more, they had to make magic with what they had :-)
