My interpretation, but ‘I am as constant as the northern star’ is a quote from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, but the guy in the song mildly misquoted it - ‘a northern star’ instead of ‘the northern star’ - which I think is why the narrator of the song calls him out for his pretentiousness. She’s such a badass.

I love the slow vibrato she has. I usually hear older singers do it, like Willie Nelson, but her youthful voice with this technique gives her voice a depth and kind of wisdom that gives me chills. So beautiful.

I've always told my wife that I'm not in love with Brandi....I'm deeply, thoroughly, completely in love with her voice. Nearly 15 years after I was introduced to her first studio album, and the butterflies are still fluttering in my stomach, my heart thrums with excitement, and I'm filled with pure joy every time she starts to sing. My wife- unfortunately for me- also happens to have a crush on Brandi herself....but I can't fault her for that, now can I?

Brandi got to perform this song to Joni on her 75th birthday ~10 weeks later at Disney Hall in LA, as a celebration of Joni's birthday including many others. The performances were released commercially in CD and a more complete DVD, likely posted if you search.
I've never heard any cover coming remotely close to Joni Mitchell's original but here we are. Not that you can really compare Brandi Carlile to Joni. Two separate kinds of talent but WOW. Mind blown.
I had (sorry!) never heard this song before hearing her in concert in Minneapolis in November 2018. And now I'm completely obsessed. Can't believe what she does with her voice. (And kudos to her strings, as well.)

My first concert ever was heart only two years ago. And she was there with them.. she was better than Heart and I LOVE heart. It was the first I’d heard of her. A case of you is my favorite song she started singing this and I just started CRYING .. and it still makes me tear up. It’s flawless.

The only cover of this Joni classic that I liked before hearing this version was the one that Prince did. This is brilliant. Listen to Prince's version if you've never heard it OR James Blake.
